Count Raven - Jen

Goddamn this track is wicked.

Wings of Steel - Fall in Line

This is an unsigned band with no members who seem to have done anything of note until this, and yet it's as polished and ambitious as albums by bands that have been going for decades. Lots going on. Super impressed. I kept thinking there must've been some past here, some sort of a legacy, but nah it really is just some completely new kids just busting out some awesome power metal. Good to see new stuff that's so strong and kids who are really going for it.

Hammers Of Misfortune - The Bastard

Such a fucking cool album. They blend prog, black, folk, and classic heavy metal together seamlessly, and the use of multiple vocalists (including the almighty Mike Scalzi) gives this album a ton of personality.

Chapel of Disease - Echoes of Light

Sounds good so far - they write long as fuck songs but they have the chops to sustain interest. Nice, fluid melodic guitars.

Panopticon - Cedar Skeletons

the horror is knowing our endeavors will not amount to a thing

Still powerful and resonant. This is now essential Panopticon as far as I'm concerned.

Nocturnus - Lake of Fire

This is pretty neat. Honestly haven't listened to this band much. I guess that changes today.

Ripped to Shreds - Jubian
Really expert blend of Swedish DM/melodeath and grind-inspired frenetic chaos on this album. Even has some epic doomy parts. Sweet vocals, too, rough but with a ghostly edge. Everyone's kicking ass all the time. A really well done release, I'm kinda surprised I don't hear these guys mentioned on MA. More exposure needed!

Arckanum - Fran Marder

Ah you can appreciate the strength of youth in every inch of this album, I love it, I've never understood why it's not a much more celebrated band, the only downside I find to this work is that it's a bit monochromatic, which is applicable to 90% of black metal albums of the time.

Arckanum - Kostogher

This one is slightly superior to the debut for me, it's different in many aspects, the production is dirtier and rawer, the death metal elements are gone and are replaced by more atmosphere and some folk influence.

Split with Svartsyn is one of best piece of music that came from Sweden…

Thumbs up for Arckanum

yeah I thought it was pretty cool as well.

Today's worktime spins have been...

U2 - War : Never been much of a fan of this band but this is one of their best with Sunday Bloody Sunday and New Years Day

Cirith Ungol - Dark Parade : Still digging this slab of muscular metal.

Cannibal Corpse - Gallery of Suicide: Maybe my least favorite of the Pat era. Still an enjoyable record with some real bangers and good guitars.

Deceased - As The Weird Travel On: Olden style thrashy deathy metal. Some great riffs.

Bathory - Blood on Ice
Jesus christ this album has so many epic moments in it. Emotions befitting the legend it tells.

Black Flag - Nothing Left Inside (1982 Demo)

11:30 min of pure doom. The riffage is fuckin awesome. Great quality demo too.

Madder Mortem - Cold Hard Rain

I still think some of the older stuff was a little wilder and more out there, but this really has some of their best actual songs. No one really captures tone and strange new moods like them. Just attention-commanding music.

Tyr - Eric the Red

Good album. They are (were?) an entity of their own. You never know where the songs are going, and it's great.

My Dying Bride - The Scarlet Garden

I've really only heard a little of their material - the song "To Outlive the Gods" really blew me away but then the rest of that album was just pretty good. I think I tried Turn Loose the Swans. But I'm not as familiar with them. This sounds good - there's a singular sense of concentration here, a real focus and sharpness despite the fact that it's such slow, dreary stuff. Aaron's vocals seem like they set it apart with the cleaner parts. That makes it sound more unique. Pretty good slow, trudging guitars.

Bjørkø - Heartrot

In Finland we have this thing called sillisalaatti ("herring salad"), a mishmash of ill-fitting components, and that's what this is. Not digging at all.

They've been one of my fav bands since the early 90s. Not a weak album in the bunch.

From "Songs Of Darkness...", I also recommend checking out "My Wine In Silence", "The Prize Of Beauty", "The Blue Lotus", and "A Doomed Lover". Hell, the entire album is perfect!

We cannot forget the absolute classic that is "Catherine Blake". I think that might be my favorite MDB song, actually.

Unleash the Archers - Awakening

I still love "Apex". One of my favorite power metal albums of the last decade.

My Dying Bride - "Death Triumphant"

Their albums' closing tracks are usually among their strongest tunes. This example, which closes "For Lies I Sire", exemplifies this.
"For Lies", while a strong album & one which saw the return of the blessed violin, is probably my least fav of theirs. But this song kills.

I'm often playing a full album if I post in here, yeah... almost to the end of that MDB album. I usually go for stuff that's more rock or blues based, rather than this kind of thing, but I try and appreciate a little of everything. I think the distinctive clean singing and spoken parts really give this the identity as I said... but they're strong songwriters. Gonna try some other albums later as well.

Forsaken - Evermore

Awesome Sabbathian riffs and a very good vocalist that mixes it up nicely. Great songwriting in general that kept me engaged despite the long run time. Wicked cover of Neon Knights as a bonus too.

Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake

The only other LoG album I have is Sacrament. I don't find anything on this to be as good as Blackened the Cursed Sun or Descending. The biggest LoG issue is the guitar work never gets that interesting, never really gets out of the groove with some interesting lead runs or solos. It gets monotonous at times.

Don't forget to try As the Flower Withers. It's the Bride at the most pissed off.

NP: Crows - The Dying Race

One of those ''why the hell did this band break up after one album?'' cases. Melodic, yet forceful power metal there. If you only heard their sound, you'd swear that they were a USPM band.

Listening to Crows based on the description, never heard of them before- I like it, indeed melodic with interesting riffs.

The best of their early albums.

Here I have: Slipknot - Solway Firth.

Slipknot’s output past the first three has been on a steady decline, but this is a new track I really enjoy.

Orodruin - Epicurean Mass

Classic trad doom album from '03, made even more essential with 2 bonus tracks from their split with Reverend Bizarre. It certainly created a buzz amongst the doom community at the time but frustratingly it would take 16 years to release another full length.

Unorthodox - Balance Of Power

Very cool Maryland doom for the evening walk. Been over 25 years since I've heard this and many of the other Hellhound bands I've recently rebought. Great to have it all back in the collection finally, righted a wrong. That was one part of the collection I've regretted selling for so long now.

NP: Count Raven - Mammons War

First time listening to this album. Top notch stuff, they're so fuckin consistent.
