Chastain - The Wicked Are Restless

Wasn't sure about this on first spin but it's growing on me - a bombastic, larger than life work and some of their most gloriously over the top stuff I've heard yet. God these guys are good.

This is probably the most Maidenish one - very similar gloss and polish to Somewhere In Time/Seventh Son, and other late 80s PM works like Transcendence, Operation Mindcrime, etc. I dig this type of sound for sure.

Easily one of my favorite Chastain tracks. The eerie piano intro, that sinister riff, that chorus! A masterpiece of dark heavy metal.

NP Fifth Angel- Hearts of Stone

This new Fifth Angel album has been an unpleasant surprise, but the last track is a good one. Probably the only song really worth revisiting.

I mostly meant the whole album, but yeah it's a solid one. One of those old 80s midtempo anthems. They're usually pretty cool. The title track "7th of Never" has to be the pick of the album for me.

Hard to disagree with you there. In an amusing coincidence, I also just learned that Ken Mary played drums for both Chastain and Fifth Angel.

Carcass - Symphonies of Sickness

I just realized how much ass this album kicks. The basic makeup of the songs are goregrind which are extended.

Queensryche - Vindication

I enjoyed their newest single, so I decided to listen to the two Todd La Torre albums that are already out. The 2013 s/t (which I have on right now) is good - not great, mind you, but solid. A bit short, though. I think "Condition Human" is a step up.

Peste Noire - La condi hu

Very epic feeling to this song.
L'ordure à l'état pur is a great album, maybe even my favorite from PN...!

Queensryche - Man the Machine

This is pretty damn good. It's not quite up to the standards of their legendary 80s output, but it's certainly difficult to believe that this is still mostly the same crew that inflicted Dedicated to Chaos onto us.

Hey, yeah, this is cool... a lot better than their lame last album. Hope the whole album is like this. Definitely much closer to the old school 80s vibe than the vanilla power metal from last time. More of the slight gloomy, melancholic edge and feel they had back then.

Deceased - Ghostly White

Goddamn this is some killer shit. Best production they've ever had and the songs are utterly fucking fearless and savage. Epic and also depraved and bizarre.

Judas Priest- Flamethrower

My first listen through of the new album. That transition to the album title in the chorus is so clunky.

Motorhead - Mean Machine

Why does this song kick so much fucking ass? It really makes me want to chug a bottle of Jack Daniel's.

Orgasmatron is the best Motorhead album, hands down. Bastards is second.

Every song on Orgasmatron is a fucking classic. Every one is an anthem. I never skip a single track. Ever. I get why people complain about the production (including the band themselves!), but the songwriting is just so good that it doesn't even matter. If you listen to it next to Bastards, for example, Bastards has much better sound, but once you let it sink in and stand on its own terms, the production on Orgasmatron really doesn't bother me. Stone cold classic!

NP: Hellwell - Behind the Demon's Eyes

Currently on "To Serve Man", an excellent track. Love Shelton's vocals on this one. This album has a few meh riffs ("Lightwave", I'm looking at you), but some of it is really great! I like the brooding atmosphere, a bit darker than most MR stuff.

on the same note

Motorhead - Dust and Glass

Love this groovy mellow track on Aftershock. Good solos and lead work. Great Motorhead record.

Manowar - Touch the Sky

If I worked out, this would be my training song. Feel like two meters tall when listening this. Normally 170 cm.

Quartz - Charlie Snow

I am embarrassed to say I've been a metal-head since about 1998/99 and I've never heard Quartz before. I mean, it's nothing super groundbreaking hearing this record NOW after hearing countless NWOBHM albums. But this must have been heavy as hell in 1980.

Stereolab - Klang Tone

These Aluminum Tunes albums are weird even for this band and it's starting to become fascinating to me.

Ghost Ship Octavius - Turned To Ice

Weird band name, but this is cool. Nicely dense, busy power/prog. Better than Nevermore by quite a lot.

Sirenia - Sister Nightfall

Hmm not bad. I've just heard of this symphonic/gothic Norwegian band. Listening to their album At Sixes And Sevens atm. They seem pretty decent instrumental wise, at least.

I highly suggest you check out the albums "Widow's Weeds" and "Beyond the Veil" by Tristania if you haven't already. Morten Veland (the guy that composes all of Sirenia's stuff) was involved with the band during those days, and both of those are better than the entire Sirenia discography, especially "Beyond the Veil". Hell, I like "World of Glass" (the first Tristania album without Morten) better than Sirenia's work too.

I listened to Beyond the Veil some days ago. Good album idd.

Vader - Revelations.

Solid album. But not as good as Welcome to the Morbid Reich or Lithany.

Not sure there is much music catchier than this. Really glad I discovered these guys recently!

Burzum - Jeg Faller

Fallen is the only Burzum album I still occasionally listen. The chorus of the second song is killer.

Yeah, and the sounds are on spot on that one too.

Bruce Dickinson - Accident of Birth

Been ignoring this great man's solo work lately. Got The Chemical Wedding, this one and maybe some other album too. Works like hell, of course.

Uriah Heep - Return to Fantasy

Title track was always good to me, but how will the rest of the album be?

EDIT: There are some very good tracks there.

Moonsorrow - Voimasta ja kunniasta

Holy fuck, it has been years and it's still awesome. Every song. Used to think that Suden uni (my first love after their last demo) was better, but no matter how good it is, it actually isn't. This is the shit, rivals Bathory in my book for sure. 100%.

Deceased - Germ of Distorted Lore

This is a mindblowing song. Might be the track that best defines their career so far, actually.

Vicious Rumors - You Only Live Twice

Welcome to the Ball is some of the catchiest stuff ever; like every fucking song is stuck in my head after listening.

It's been a few months, and it's time to do a bulk add of new music. Sampling stuff on YouTube right now:

Chanson D'hiver
By: Ever Circling Wolves
From: The Silence From Your Room

Haven't formed an opinion yet, but I'm not shutting it off.

Giving this one another chance to see if it grabs me like some of their other early offerings.

It's a good blend of Queensryche-ish classy melodies and crunchier riffs like some of the blue collar bands. It's a very polished, almost mainstream-sounding work that still manages to sound metal as fuck. Shame it didn't get them more recognition really; it could have.

Conception - Some Wounds

Great record, but I'm probably in the minority preferring Flow. This is a bit more aggressive maybe, but not as quite good, though I'm still gettign the feel of it. Need to track down Parallel Minds, which is even more power metally from what I've heard.

Man, this is such an underrated piece of music...stoner, gothic, folkish, doomish...everything included in right amounts.
