Anacrusis - Hindsight

Pretty cool, a bit sloppy on the re-recorded early fast stuff but maybe that is the way it should be?

Edge of Sanity - Darkday

Melodic yet eerie death metal - it's been a while since I've heard this album.

Iron Maiden - Judgement Of Heaven

Great tune, greal melody! I allways liked that The X Factor is built around Harris' personal feelings and thoughts.

Mary's Blood - VirtuaReaL

Finally it's here. A tad bit underwhelming in that there's no obvious huge stand-out destroyer of a track, but there's also absolutely zero weak tracks. Even the incredibly out-of-place "Hello" is perfectly fine.

Carach Angren - Yonder Realm Photography

So I just discovered this Dutch symphonic black metal band after buying their CD on a whim from Season of Mist. I didn't do a thorough background check on them via YouTube but from their image alone, they reminded me of Cradle of Filth with their image and outfits. I listened to "Lammendam" to and from work and was quite impressed with their music. Granted, it's not original and some parts reminded me of CoF. But I really like how they mesh lush synths, blasting drums and ripping guitar riffs. Yeah, it's a formula done many times before but Carach Angren executes it very well. They make well-crafted songs and their lyrical themes about ghosts and hauntings is severely under-utilized in metal. I'll explore their other albums more in the future.

Mirror - Secrets of Time

These guys really 'get it.' Killer grooves, ass-kicking guitars and great vocals. It's classic without being at all a 'remember the good old days?' nostalgia fest. Instead it just sounds timeless in the way that a lot of the best music does.

Yngwie Malmsteen - Eclipse

It seems the same records have been in the stereos time and time again lately. When you find something good...

Saint Vitus - Die Healing

So fucking hopeless atmosphere.

Bruce Dickinson - Accident of Birth

Not going to spam. This is good shit too, Maiden good.

 Well said!

NP: Edge of Sanity - When All is Said

The early Edge of Sanity stuff had some serious depth to it - this sounds really depressing! Not a fan of the more fluffy shit Dan tried later though.

Branikald - Рдяндалир

It's hard to review raw sounding albums from bands with a lot of potential. This album is among those. The record is virtually divided in two parts: distorted (first 2 songs) and clean (the last two). For both of those parts true that opening riffs are repetitive, though bridges are more interesting and sophisticated. Voice sounds hateful like in most slavic bm bands (especially with patriotic/ns hints).
Overall, I don't think i will return to this album in the near future, but i absolutely appreciate its undoubted importance and impact for Russian bm scene.

The Arbiter - Every Good Path

One-man doom/death metal from Hungary. I like it, especially that groove when it picks up some speed.

That's up there with my favorite Branikald albums but maybe not the best if you're new to his discography. I'd recommend Kveldulv and Blikk Av Kald first I think, which are a little more dynamic than Рдяндалир. Also worth checking out Forest's first four albums.

One of my favorites of all time! An acquaintance of mine recently went down to North Carolina and scored an interview with Henry, got to look at some old Revenant photos and memorabilia and overall had a great convo with him. Henry has pretty much left music behind but seems to be very content and doing quite well in life.

Xiphea-Hook

This is some of the cheesiest, sugary ladden stuff I've ever heard and I fucking love it. Holy shit the vocals sound exactly like it's been pulled from a disney song and it works so well. Chills.

One of the first Black Sabbath albums to not feature trite nauseating filler material, and it only took them 20 years. I'd call it perfect if it wasn't for Call of the Wild, which is still a decent song; but it doesn't really hold up compared to the rest of the tracks. To this day it's still out of print along with the other 3 Tony Martin albums, which is criminal. Hopefully Iommi gets around to reissuing them before, well, you know.

Mirror - Pyramid of Terror

I think I want to like this way more than I actually do. The hype and reviews made this seem straight up my alley but on first listen it feels surprisingly average. Certainly not up to the level of Traveler or Smoulder when it comes to more traditional metal in 2019. Seems like a grower though, maybe I'll love it in a month.

Crypt Sermon - The Ruins of Fading Light

Out of the Garden was solid except for Into the Holy of Holies, which was one of the best doom songs I'd heard in years. This new one is more consistently great, and I can see this landing in my year-end list, but holy shit if every song was as good as Christ is Dead then this could be in contention for album of the DECADE. I like the whole album a lot but damn that one is a stunner. Key of Solomon is actually probably the least interesting song on the record.

Barathrum - Infernal

Fucking doomy, heavy riffs. Can't decide which one is my favourite, Eerie or this. They're playing the neighbor town this weekend.

I wasn't that into Traveler and had the same 'maybe I'll like it later' reaction to them - they seemed a bit too generic.

The Raconteurs - Help Me Stranger

These vocal harmonies give me life.

Virgin Black - Cult Of Crucifixion

Very good song from their most underrated album IMO. After [finally] releasing Pianissimo, I wonder if any new material is in the works from them. I sure hope so!

Verdunkeln - Verdunkeln

So insanely good. May prefer Einblick to this one, but need to give this one more listens. This band's vibe is just so dark and eerie (fans of The Ruins of Beverast, Urfaust, and so on take note).
