Aretha Franklin - It Ain't Exactly So

So, the genre of music I'm the most addicted to after metal is soul music. But for some reason, i've never ever dug into Aretha. I'm checking out some early catalog stuff, and it's all really good.

Satan - Cruel Magic (yeah, this is growing on me more! NICE).
King Crimson - in the Court of the Crimson King (Finally found my copy of this thing!)
Blue Oyster Cult - On Your Feet or On Your Knees
Triumph - Classics (Rock N Roll Machine still rules!)
Venom - Temples of Ice (I like that Oppenheimer in name checked in the song about nukes).

Love it.

Every one of their albums is about half filler to me, BUT also half songs I REALLY like, so I've probably bought all of them by now. I have a Jack White solo CD I'll be playing sometime, too.

Eternal Champion - The Armor of Ire

Experimenting with this so-called "NWOTHM" stuff. This one I don't mind too much, though I do find myself just wanting to spin Manilla Road instead.

I'm not her biggest fan, but I do recognize what a talent she was. I LOVE the song I say a little Prayer. Sadly, I didn't discover it until after her passing.

Death - Human

What a phenomenal drummer. May he RIP.

I like all of them. They can have a patchy, rough quality at times, but that's why they're cool to me.

Acerus - The Sentinel of the Demise

The huge sense of melody and song construction keeps me coming back as much as these lethal fucking riffs.

Propagating the Abomination - Chaos Apocalypse

...I tried to like this one, gave up after a couple of seconds. Now I enjoy looking for & listening to supposedly ultra-brutal stuff, but this is a bit too far (coming from someone who regularly listens to Enmity and Encenathrakh). Not 'too far' in the sense of brutality, more so in the sense of being try-hard, terribly produced and made by pretty incompetent musicians. On the first listen I literally thought the low rasp vocals were the sound of insanely sped up bass-drums. In fact I would have probably still thought that if it weren't for the reviews I read. Also I've never heard an album with such abundant and audible audio clipping. I'm not trying to write a review here, so I'll add just a couple more things: This album is bearable for the most part, it even has some decent moments. I'd even go as far as saying that it could've been an interesting album if it had better production, vocals, instrumentation a.k.a. better everything. On the bright side, this album has made me appreciate Enmity even more.

Final rating: 35%
Oh wait...

Astral Doors- Ocean of Sand

Ok. Holy shit. This song is really good. I've been spinning Astral Doors for a couple of days now and man oh man, I think this is their best song. The organ in the background, the chorus that will never leave my head. I think this album has a whole has Nils best performance(he's gotten higher in his vocals later on which kind of turned me off) He's much more gruffer here which is a plus.

Metallica - The God That Failed.

I've never been a fan of the black album, and could never get into it. But this afternoon I queued it up. By the time I hit this song, I sort of realized that after something like 15 years... I might actually really like it. So many of the songs are just so damn catchy.

The God That Failed is by far the best song on it, imo.

High Power - Offrande Charnelle

This is a monster of a song. They were pretty great at conjuring this evil, dark atmosphere and the guitar tone is stunningly sharp and badass. One of those weird bands that should've gotten bigger. But alas I suppose time and place matter.

Dimmu Borgir - Relinquishment of Spirit and Flesh

"Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" is definitely the best Demon Burger album.
Also, I kind of miss when they used to just name their albums three random evil sounding words tbh.

Thaurorod- Heart of the Lion

Meh again. The chorus and leads are nice, but man I miss the original vocalist. If I wanted to listen to Elisa Martin I would've put on Hall of olden Dreams.

Crippled Black Phoenix - The Resurrectionists (album)

Not sure it'd be possible to listen to their stuff song-by-song, it all just works so well for a late-evening-wife-is-in-bed relaxing kind of feeling !

Death SS - Werewolf

Where has this been all my life? Filthy, riff-tastic old school shit.

Death-Perennial Quest

‘Crystal Mountain’ was catchy. This however is a mess of ideas that don’t relate to each other, like at all. I still can’t get into this band aside from a few choice cuts, even the older material.

I love that late 70s-80s Italian stuff like this and Paul Chain, Black Hole. So good!

Have you heard L'Impero Delle Ombre? A new group mining a similar sound.

And just so I remain on topic:

Twisted Tower Dire - "The Longing"

Still miss Tony Taylor's powerful soar.

No I'll check em out. And yeah I was playing Black Hole yesterday too - that band has such a feel for occult, eerie atmospheric melody. Death SS is just a monster with riffs, though on first listen, the first half of that album was better than the second. But I'll be looking into their other work too.

Metal Church - Low to Overdrive

Riff hammer, classic shit - I've loved this since I was a kid.

Almost perfect metalcore with a sound predominantly melodeath.

Octaviagrace - Fragments

I think this might actually be their best album so far. The whole thing's uplifting and sprightly, with a small misstep here and there. Pretty solid work.

This is some of the most unoffensive power metal I've ever heard. The definition of "Eh, not bad. Could be better."

This song just ended a second ago!

1) I can recommend PRIME EVIL as another great non-Cronos Venom CD.

2) Don't know who Paul Miller is, though.
