Control Denied - Expect the Unexpected.

A better take on the basic sound they did on the last Death record.

Marko Hietala - Star, Sand and Shadow

Between this, Psychotic Waltz and Ironsword, 2020 is a great year so far and can only go uphill from here. This album is an extremely evocative piece of music that pulls from a bunch of influences.

Bloodbound - Tabula Rasa

It's still wild how this sounds nothing like anything the band did before or since. It's also easily their best by a wide margin.

Destroyer 666 - I am The Wargod (Ode To Battle Slain)

The best Destroyer 666 song in my opinion.

Love the riffage and that guitar tone.

Beherit - The Oath of Black Blood

Just sat in the car smoking a cigarette and really trying to uncover this album, and its actually really good, the riffs are really great old BM riffing and is just super evil. There's something interesting to me about the atmosphere of pure evil and almost hate that the production gives it. Definitely gonna listen again in the near future.

Svartediket - Vekklene kommer

This is the final track from the "black metal musical" that was a few years ago. The male vocalist sounds insane, and I don't know if it's a black metal vocalist or if it's just a theater guy trying his best, but they sure are unique. The last part with the female and girl voices are great and it definitely feels like a song from a musical then.

One of my absolute favorite bands in any genre. Beautiful music.

Yeah, they are reliably wonderful. It's subtle and vulnerable without being weak and frail if that makes sense. I've yet to take a dive (hehe) into their discography, but they are definitely on my list.

That is a very apt description. I find my love of shoegaze to be resonant with my love of a particular sort of black metal, although paradoxically I often find myself put off by black metal bands that drift a little too far into shoegaze terrain.

Slowdive is incredibly frustrating for me. I listened to "Alison" for the first time over a decade ago, and I immediately fell in love with it--easily one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard--but when I try to listen to other songs by them, they leave me feeling underwhelmed and irritated.

Ghoul- Splatterthrash

Man, absolutely love this band, especially this album. If you like thrash/death and never heard them, I highly recommend them.

I have a similar feeling, i love Dagger but the other songs i've heard didn't touch me as much.
Same thing happens with Red House Painters's song Japanese to English

Hüsker Dü - Chartered Trips

This album is an adventure

Smashing Pumpkins - Silverfuck

Killer drums and just monstrous when they get roaring. I think if I had to pick one 90's alt record this would be it.

While Heaven Wept - Vast Oceans Lachrymose

This one has taken me years to fully understand. It really does not give the listener anything and you have to be ready for what it is. I can dig that.

Triumph - Rock & Roll Machine (Love the title track, and I like a lot of the rest. I hadn't heard this for years, since back when I still had the LP).
Quiet Riot - Road Rage (Really sounds different w/out DuBrow).
Gillan - Live At the BBC 79/80 (He sure as Hell can SING!)
Helloween - Master of the Rings
Who - Who's Next (Still great!)

Heathen Foray- Weltenwandel

Well this was a surprise. I always liked HFs stuff but this new album has toned down the Viking folk influence compared to their older stuff. Not a bad album by any means but I guess I was listening to Inner Force(their best album) so many times and just assumed they would keep that sound.

Bedemon - Child of Darkness

If you can get over the basement-like sound quality, you've got some classic heaviness in the vein of (quite obviously) Pentagram. Some tunes--like "Frozen Fear"--sound literally like Sabbath covers as opposed to Sabbath worship.

Should really delve into new Body Count. At least the two last albums. Every song I've heard has been great.

So gutted these guys broke up after two fantastic heavy metal records. They've very graciously donated a song to my new film. (Kill or Be Killed)

Nocte Obducta - In Erinnerung an Herbststürme

If underground black metal and commercial black metal have an exact border between them, the first two Nocte Obducta albums are it. It's basically Cradle of Filth playing Gorgoroth demos or the other way around.

Checking out the new track. It's pretty promising!

Of course there's also this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-4f2bhaMz8

Hecate Enthroned - Aflame in the Halls of Blasphemy

Or what it would sound like if Dani Filth joined a Norwegian black metal band with a drummer who just snorted fifteen lines of speed.

Falkenbach - Vanadis

Freyja is my favourite Norse deity, and if I ever establish a noble house we will use her boar, Hildsvíni, as our symbol. That aside, very powerful clean vocals on this song. I almost wish it was clean vocals only, as the harsh ones and the choirs doing "hah!" sounds a bit out of place.

Tales of Evening- Rebellious Soul

English version from one of their songs off a previous album. Much more lighter and the vocals are still great. One of my favorite female vocalists.

Twilight Kingdom - Adze

I love discovering progressive metal gems like these - this is some real adventurous music with soaring vocals, dreamy keys and choppy riffing.

Psychotic Waltz - Pull the String

This is the darkest, meanest tune on here - oppressively grim, but striking anyway. This album has been a nonstop fascination for me. The way they use melody is just so enveloping. Like a wave.

Emptiness - It Might Be

It was always fascinating to me how this band pretty much got rid of all metal on Not for Music, but that album just felt like and had that very specific vibe I first heard on Nothing but the Whole. It really was a completely organic development and a proper continuation of the sound, and I really can't remember any metal band doing something like that while largely moving away from metal on one of their albums (or their latest). In short, brilliant band, brilliant album.

Pink Floyd - Echoes

Always said to my wife - I'm not buying Pink Floyd records, because (side projects included) there's about thirty, they contain a good bit of the greatest guitar work ever laid on vinyl, and I'll never listen to anything else ever again.

So Father Christmas brings me a copy of 'Meddle', naturally.
