Anthrax - The Enemy

SCREAMS...IN THE NIGHT!

Oh boy hell yeah, stone cold classic and one of the most personally impersonal albums for me (being boozed up, this seems the only possible way to put it). Amazing from the beginning to the end.

Aska - Longships

This is almost like guilty pleasure stuff for me with how silly and dated these lyrics are (it's like early 80s writing style for an album from 2006), but man can they riff super well. There's something distinctly American about these big fat juicy, groovy riffs. It's just so addictive. This is beer and pretzels metal if there ever was some. But it's higher quality than much of what else is like this.

Inferno - Gate-Eye of Fractal Spiral

Very creepy and very epic modern Black Metal!

Thy Dying Light - Thy Dying Light

This is good stuff. I dig the re-arrangement of "Fist of Satan."

Riot - Fight or Fall

Yup, definitely some of the best power/speed metal of the 80s. Great guitar work, great vocals.

Anathema - Eternity

Early Anathema is super underrated in the grand scheme of gothic metal.

:???:

NP: Devastation - Eye for an Eye

The vocalist sounds a bit like a wimp, but these guys know how to riff hard.

Following up the monster that was Голос сталі was practically impossible, but it's still not disappointing

Enslaved - Større enn tid - Tyngre enn natt

not their most coherent songwriting, but this song alone contains some of their best riffs ever

Loathe - I Let It In And It Took Everything

Easily one of the best albums of 2020. It's like a mixture of Vildhjarta, Architects, Deftones, and My Bloody Valentine. (yes, MBV, not Bullet for my Valentine)

Drown - Drowned VII: Father Subaqueous

This project is phenomenal. It's diverse and quite beautiful funeral doom metal themed around the gloomy depths of the sea that somehow perfectly captures that atmosphere. Probably my favourite discovery of this year so far and perfect immersive music to get lost in during these weird times of isolation.

This whole record (Guardian of the Fire) that just came out fucking RIPS. This thing is relentless. Huge must have for death-thrash fans.

Mortiis - En mørk horisont (parts 1-5)

One day I will direct the movie this song invokes in my head. It will be heavily based on (plagiarizing of) Ocarina of Time :P Part 1 makes me think of Link riding through Hyrule Field while the sun is slowly setting and he needs to arrive at a location before it's too late.

Lumsk - "Om Hundrede Aar Er Alting Glemt"

Most beautiful song of all time? Not at all metal, though Lumsk used to be metal. Sort of Scandinavian prog folk rock, with lyrics from a Knut Hamsun poem.

Korgonthurus - Kuolleestasyntynyt

Like hot damn! I last checked in on this band with their first album that I don't even remember. 10 years later, they release one of the best sounding Finnish black metal albums I've heard in a good while!

Dynazty - The Man and the Elements

The first half of this album is pretty incredible, but either we're in the mid-album doldrums or this album was very much front-loaded. Only time will tell which.

Dynazty - Apex

...the former, it is. This song rocks, even if the chorus is a liiiiittle bit too similar to "Starlight" for comfort.

^ Did that leak or is it actually out?

Marko Hietala - Pyre of the Black Heart

Psychotic Waltz ate up everything else this year but this and the new Ironsword are two other fantastic albums this year. So much soul it's blinding.

I dunno when the release date is, so I'm gonna go with just being leaked. You're really gonna love this one when you buy it, it's even better than Firesign was.

The singles basically sounded like they could've been on Firesign, but with even more glossy production. I'm sure it'll be good.

Fun little Swedish death/thrash band. They've basically disappeared at this point.

One of the best pm songs of all time, I'd reckon. That whole album kind of blows my mind. I presume you heard the recent rerecording of that song? Atrocious.

NP: Ulcerate - Vermis

Getting excited for the new one coming in April! Best dm band going right now...

Blood Incantation - Awakening from the Dream of Existence to the Multidimensional Nature of Our Reality (Mirror of the Soul)

Taking classic 90's old school technical death metal and expanding upon it with 70's psychedelic/progressive rock influences. What can I say that hasn't already been said about this masterpiece?

I dunno, maybe that it's a bit shoddy with regard to actual songwriting? :-P Seems to me that shorter songs work much better for this band (though I still can't see greatness in it).

Suffering Hour - Dwell

This is how you do it :headbang:

I can see where their longer songs might turn some people off, but some of my favorite songs of theirs are the longer ones (Vitrification of Blood Pt.1 is another great example).

The Suffering Hour EP is good shit though, I agree with you on that one :P

Eh I think Blood Incantation is fine with the longer songs. They have plenty of time to get even better too, they're not that far along at all.

Sleater-Kinney - Let's Call It Love

This is a great album - huge, enveloping psychedelia and hard rock attitude.

Edguy - Sacrifice

Holds up... I remember getting this when it came out. They had a cool voice and style on this, and the production is warm and heavy enough to be satisfying. They changed things up every album back then and that was always cool.
