Mare Cognitum - Internal Deliquescence

Great melodic BM, with some alien sound to it.

Ecthirion - Psalms Of The Risen Dead

Quality epic/symphonic metal. I don't usually go for this type of stuff, but I dig it!

Nightwish - Shoemaker

This song is weird. Not sure what to make of it yet. I can tell already this album's gonna need more spins, as it's not as immediate as you'd expect.

As someone that definitely didn't listen to any of the leak at all whatsoever, there's absolutely no chance that I'd find "Shoemaker" to be a really great song that might just be up there with some of their best work. I also don't think it's one of the most progressive things I've heard them do since I most certainly haven't heard it in the first place.

Anyway,
Riot - Thundersteel
I have this album on again due to the fact that...well, it fucking rips.

Monolink - Father Ocean

Soothing electro stuff - nice waves of mellow sound. I needed a break from the heavy shit for an hour anyway. Xlxlx has good taste in this stuff.

If you like soothing electro stuff that starts with Mono-, why not try Monolake!

I'll try that. You ought to give Monolink a try though, real meditative, peaceful shit.

Solstice - To Sol a Thane

Forgot how fucking cool this was. Great guitar tone. Cool ancient, folksy sounding riff-work.

It took a little while, but White Horse Hill is definitely up there in the ranks for me. I'm going to miss Paul's vocals and lyrics on the next record.

God, they can never keep a consistent lineup, can they? Apparently they have a woman on vocals now - ought to be an interesting shift for them.

I wonder if the next album will be another 5-20 year wait.

These lyrics are really marvelously written too - real poetic.

Dokken - Into the Fire

God, I love "Tooth and Nail" so much. Incredibly catchy and fun with great guitar leads and hooks.

Ozzy Osbourne - Killer of Giants.

Love this cut and this record. Honestly I love this a lot more than anything he put out since. Great guitar work and love the riffs.

Janis Joplin - Pearl (Her voice is as great as everybody says it is!)
Foreigner - Complete Greatest Hits (Love it!)
Deep Purple - Slaves & Masters (Under-rated- I love "King of Dreams" in particular).
Alice Cooper - Easy Action (It's OK- Kind of a weird one for Alice).
Styx - Pieces of Eight (A couple of my favorite Styx songs are on this one: "Blue Collar Man" & "Renegade").

Alghazanth - Moving Mountains

Damn this is so good, definitely their best song imo. They're an underrated band in general though.

Sodom - Persecution Mania

This stuff is almost beautiful.

Uriah Heep - Rainbow Demon

D&W album has two of my favourite songs by them: this and Easy Livin'. Yes, heard it a thousand times, but still it rules.

Stranger than Fiction is a great album. My favorite by them is Suffer. It's the first one I ever heard by them.

Currently Sinister - Hate

Album is an absolute masterpiece. It's a shame most of the material following this one didn't really live up to Hate.

Bonehunter - Black Star Carcass

I've never heard these guys before. The band name and artwork of the album (Children of The Atom) made me think they were Brutal/slamming death metal, but it turns out they are blackened/thrash. Pretty good stuff!

Immortal - A Sign for the Norse Hordes to Ride
Do I like "Pure Holocaust" or "At the Heart of Winter" more? I just don't know these days. They both seem to switch places regularly as my favorite Immortal album. Right now I'm really digging PH though.

Bad Religion has been one of my all time favorites since I was in high school. I'd say they're my favorite punk band for sure. "Stranger Than Fiction" is a fantastic album, though my favorites are "Suffer" and "No Control" (which one of those I like better just kinda depends on my mood I guess).

Stranger Than Fiction is my fave, and the first album I bought from them. So maybe buying order has some effect. I'm still to get half of their albums though.

Incredible song. I also really love Anathema's cover of it, where it is transposed into a totally different song.

It could've been one of their big songs. But I've understood it's not even played live. Totally moving song.

Vader - I Shall Prevail.

Because Vader always prevails. Glad I was able to see them pre-corona lockdown.

Vhol - Deeper than Sky

Sifting through some stuff I haven't played in a while... this is such a bizarre piece of thrash laced with prog and traditional and all kinds of shit. Quite cool melodicism. A real frenzied sound.

Anathema - Sleepless

This song definitely feels like it should have become more of a gothic metal anthem than it did.

Conception - She Dragoon

I was kind of taken aback by "oh no no no, I don't want your pheromones" but the song's pretty good so I don't give a fuck about that awkward lyric atm.

I can definitely hear the old school goth rock vibe in that song, it's a great tune! Makes me think of another song:

Paradise Lost - Shattered

I love how dramatic the pinch harmonic section sounds. I'd like to see more use of that technique in this way than the usual Zakk Wylde style

Dynazty - Paradise of the Architect

They've definitely found a niche but they do sound good. Just massive pop hooks.

I guess they did what I was talking about in the Firesign review and made a more homogeneous album - this is good but it all does sound a lot alike. I like the bigness of the sound and the truly spotless production, but it's pretty much all the same kind of futuristic-sounding powerpop. Some quite good tunes though.

They have a good feel for an epic chorus line and a cool place to drop out the guitars to build something up - but yeah it could've used like one or two songs that just let loose and rocked anyway. Didn't have to be as all over the place as the last one, but still.

Opeth - "The Amen Corner"

I wonder if there's been a thread for favorite guitar solos. I've always really liked this one (I mean both of the two parts, taken together), along with "Serenity Painted Death" and "The Funeral Portrait." It's nothing too fancy, just a few seconds long, but well-done and with a lot of feeling.
