Pandemonium "The Ancient Catatonia"

Polish cult classic in the vein of early Samael.

Abigor - Satanized

Anyone notice how the guitars sound like tortured cats on this album? Fucking headache inducing.

That Abigor album was BAD.

Thor - Rock the City

Unchained EP again.

Tsjuder - Morbid Lust

I hear hints of Emperor's 'With Strength I Burn' in the underlying melody on parts of this song

Amorphis - The Way

Great opener. Always a little surprised Amorphis didn't cross over a bit into the mainstream.

I don't remember exactly how I found out about them, but that was one of half a dozen songs that I listened to first, which kept snowballing. It seemed that Scandinavian and adjacent bands just never appealed to American tastes, with the occasional almost exception like Nightwish, who were still very niche here.

Diabolic Oath - Profane Death Exodus

Current favorite album. Ripping and vicious. The mid paced sections are crammed with blood boiling savagery.

GWAR - Fuck this Place

I certainly agree with the gist of the song right now...

Blood Incantation - Hidden History of the Human Race

I really think we still have yet to see the best they can do - they're only getting started.

Hanker - Castaway

Second play since getting it in the mail a few hours ago. This is some serious shredding, old school trad metal. A lot of new bands could learn from this about propulsive, heartfelt writing and catchy as fuck riffwork.

Haha, I was listening to it earlier today. Normally it would seem more uncanny, but we probably both have it on our minds since it's fairly high on the list and we like the band. They're still too relatively new to me to have had a shot on my own list, but I'm definitely intrigued by their possibilities.

I don't care if people think this album is "overrated", I fucking love it. One of the best death metal bands to see live too.

I know I won't shut up about this band, but you should give Cryptic Shift a try too. They're basically Blood Incantation mixed with technical thrash metal. Really good shit.

I keep thinking the album will wear off for me, since it's been hyped as much as other bands like Vektor and Power Trip that I don't really feel like playing much. But nope - Blood Incantation keeps being entertaining. I'll try that other band soon.

Cryptic Shift is somewhere in my cue as well, I just haven't gotten to them yet. I love Vektor (I guess almost everyone does), but Power Trip doesn't click for me. They're fine, just nothing spectacular.

When I finally got into vinyl I went into my local record shop and found that they had most of JT's discography there, so I scooped it up. I'm surprised there weren't more imitators of Ian's flute playing, it's such an engrossing instrument which adds so much variety. And being a mandolin player, it's always great to hear it on tracks like that one.

NP - Vetrar Draugurinn - "Forever Locked Within"

This album is very solid, but this song in particular is phenomenal, and is especially elevated by Marjan's vocals, so angelic.

King Crimson - Pictures of a City

You can tell from this song that Voivod were HUGE fans of these guys. Fripp's guitar playing on this song is downright ridiculous.

I really need to listen to Voivod more. They seem like they should be totally up my alley, but I don't usually hear them linked to KC, who I love. Their jazzy late 60s/70s stuff with saxophone and such like that track is brilliant. I'm not as personally crazy about Fripp's tone there though on a few of the sections, it's a little fuzzy and abrasive for my taste. The more subtle stuff is great though.

NP - Cryptic Shift - "Moonbelt Immolator"

I think it's time. This is pretty good shit so far. The vibrato pedal on the cleans is quite an intoxicating sound. It's at just the right setting, whereas some bands tend to go a little too far, where it sounds ridiculous rather than otherworldly. Into the second track now, and as much as I tend to gravitate towards more melodious material, the heavier parts have some of that Gorguts-y dissonance I love. The chorused fretless bass is also a nice touch. Third track, and wow, the perfect clean chorused guitar tone. I think this is definitely going to be on heavier rotation.

Exhumed - Horror

This album seems to have garnered lukewarm reception around here, but I find it to be an enjoyable slab of deathgrind

Catacomb - "Nemesis"

What a fascinating album. It's like if Demilich tried to make an album merging Orchid-era Opeth and Tales From a Thousand Lakes-era Amorphis.

Mulatu Astatke & Black Jesus Experience - Ambassa Lemdi

This is as free flowing as a river. Just gorgeous lush soundscapes. Liking it a lot... 2019 was a hell of a year for music.

Falconer - Decadence of Dignity

This is an extremely catchy, sharp piece of metal. God they were good even so early. The melodic sensibility on this one is exquisite.

Solitude - You Got My Mind

This is a really good heavy metal album with a bit of power metal influence from 2015. I Had never heard it before.

Saint Vitus - Dying Inside

Dave Chandler's reverb drenched, extended solo sections pair really well with the brick heavy riffs and Wino's strained vocals. A doom metal classic!

Chapters isn't my favorite of theirs (that would be either the debut or Northwind), but "Decadence of Dignity" is very much a standout track.

It's easily my favorite from them, though all their stuff is at least solid. The new album has really been impressing me too though, more than most of their other stuff.

Mayhem - Pagan Fears

I still maintain that the atmosphere of this album wouldn't be the same without Attila's bizarre vocals. I know he's pretty polarizing but I'm on the "love it" side of the equation.
