Amorphis - Into Hiding

Their last couple albums have been excellent, some of the best in their rather expansive career in fact. However, I'll probably always love "Tales From the Thousand Lakes" the most.

Kamelot- The Shadow Theory

This is so god damn BORING.

I liked "Silverthorn" and "Haven" better when it comes to the Tommy stuff (still enjoy both of those albums tbh!), and nothing will ever top "The Fourth Legacy", "Karma", "Epica" and "The Black Halo" (as far as Kamelot's music is concerned at least). I didn't mind "The Shadow Theory" at first, but it's grown off of me... Still pretty stoked for the upcoming live blu-ray, though. I'll probably enjoy that more than TST.

Just pretend they broke up after Silverthorn. That was a quality piece of work. But nothing beats Epica or Black Halo - those are just career defining works.

Autopsy - Pagan Savior

The sinister melodies in this song always send chills up my spine every time I hear it

Vader- Where Angels Weep

I have no clue if Tibi et Igni or Solitude in Madness is better when it comes to recent Vader. As much as I think De Profundis is the pinnacle, these two are so good I just can't decide.
Same with their Ep's, Thy Messenger or The Art of War.

For modern Vader I go to Welcome to the Morbid Reich more than anything but as that album is approaching 10 years of age I guess calling it 'recent' is a stretch.

Mastodon - 'Trainwreck'

These longer songs are definitely the weaker ones on the album, but they're still some of the best lengthier, progressive songs they'd ever write.

hey, I loved Trainwreck, one of my favorite songs on remission

Ulver - Bergtatt-Ind I Fjeldkamrene

I love Ulver's two black metal albums almost too much

Sonata Arctica - Message From The Sun

Teasing gits. Part of me wishes they'd gone with the (now normal) middle-of-the-road stuff up front, and put this on the end has an easter egg for the older fans. Great little song !

Viogression - Expound and Exhort. The HammerHeart Re-issue with bonus tracks. Can't get enough of this album. A perfect death metal recording for those who love Obituary's earliest and most twisted and vile albums.

For me, The Art Of War is actually my favourite thing they've ever done. Tibi et Igni is maybe my favourite full length.

I'm listening to the new Julianna Barwick album. If you like ambient music, do yourself a favour and check her out.

Virgin Steele - Unholy Water

Another great one from the Marriage albums. Really starting to get it. Took some time.

This is good stuff. Found them through the Cynic connection. I'm not even the biggest Obituary fan and I dig them.

Too long since I last listened their first album. Should get the new one too at some point.

The Black Dahlia Murder - Nightbringers

Love this title cut. Vocals, riffs, leads, drums. The main riff is sweet.

Iron Maiden - Judgement of Heaven

Not a fan of the vocals or songwriting of the Blaze era but this is a pretty good cut. You can hear the future of Maiden on songs on like this.

Ratt - Invasion of your Privacy

In recent years, it seems to be becoming my favorite release of theirs.

Samael - Worship Him

I remember thinking this was quite ‘extreme’ when I bought it when it originally was released. How times have changed. I still enjoy it a lot despite having heard it hundreds of times.

The Meads Of Asphodel - I'm Running Out Of Time Doing Nothing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kHKfhXqBSA

Fuck me sideways if this isn't a ridiculously catchy chorus. The music video is just the right amount of goofy too - these guys are fucking nutty, and I like that!

flamenco goodness! He has dialed this down a bit on later records. excessive on the debut? Maybe but I dig it.

It's an interesting album. You can tell that the band was still searching for identity at that point.

NP: Metal Church - Mirror of Lies

Bursting speed/power metal here. Thought this era of the band would be without value but boy I was wrong.

Yeah, its my least favorite record by them but its still a good one. I don't think they really found their footing until In Your Multitude but their early powermetally stuff was sweet.
Plus Khan's vocals matured and kept getting better, I like it when he got a less husky tone.

I just wish they would re-release it but rights and all that...

They really pulled off the more sludgy sound with this one!

Ensiferum- For Sirens

Meh. Besides that killer melodic riff the song plods along with nothing else going for it.

Motorhead - Overkill

Fucking classic. Random thought: Has anyone else seen that mashup video on youtube where this song was mixed with James Brown "Superfreak"? One of the better mashup jobs I've ever heard.

Deep Purple - Stormbringer (2 CD edition)
Jimi Hendrix - Are you Experienced (Great- obviously!)
Gun - Taking On the World
Fate - A Matter of Attitude (Not bad, but rather non-heavy for an ex-member of Mercyful Fate).
Neil Young - Decade (LOVE IT).

Pain of Salvation - One Hour by the Concrete Lake

People who want prog that actually progresses should give this a whirl if they haven't... a really head-spinning piece of labyrinthine music that just gets bleaker and darker the longer it goes. No easy choruses or any shit like that.

Godless North - Dark Rites of the Mystic Order

This is actually quite good so far. Their most recent album didn't impress me at all, but they've got some ideas here.

Coroner - "Semtext Revolution"

Some thrash can be challenging to listen to from a production standpoint, particularly the earlier era, but this one has killer guitar tone.

Can't have enough of Tommy's surgical picking :)

Morbid Saint - Scars

7 minutes of some of the most aggressive riffs on the market, it's unreal. The drummer is phenomenal

Delain - The Greatest Escape

My last/fm for this year is going to be 'year of Delain' again. Not sure how I feel about that, but if they will put out a great album right at the start of the year, it will happen !

Fuck you. Fuck this band. Even their newest stuff is boring droll, but this is god awful.

Dragonforce - Sonic Firestorm

The production on here, with that warm, full guitar/key combo and ZP's vocal harmonies, really enhances the material. It wouldn't be the same if it took away those sorts of details.

One of the worst live bands i've ever see also, they played some songs from that album

Culprit - Players

Searching for forgotten bands sometimes pays off with discoveries like this song

Was never into them before seeing them at FTA last summer. Explosive set and this is a pretty explosive cut.
