Dark Princess - Everlasting Pain

Russian goth metal, complete with a 70% lineup change in four albums, a song called 'Please Betray Me', and terrrrrrible lyrics about vampires and so forth. Limited to two decent riffs per album.

Yeah, they're not really a band to listen to for guitars or lyrics. I really like Natalia's voice though, and "Point of No Return" and "Fight With Myself" I think are standout tracks in particular.

NP: Sacrifice - "Afterlife"

I've been in a thrash mood more often than usual the past few weeks. Definitely one of the better ones.

Stryper - King of Kings

This is way more ballsy than I expected musically. I need to checkout more of this record.

Vektor - Cosmic Cortex

I got TR first and found this one harder to get into. TR grabbed me by the balls off the bat.

That's three of us on here that like them, then :D

To-Mera - Dreadful Angel

Never got around to listening to this band when they were active - glad I'm doing it now when I can appreciate the oddness of the music.

Samael - Worship Him (the song)

Those slow deathly riffs. Addictive.

Bal-Sagoth - Battle Magic

Everybody should be as unabashedly unafraid to follow their passions as these guys are. Just so exuberant and insane.

Anthrax - Spreading The Disease

Hot take/personal opinion: this album is the best thing to ever come out of the American Big Four of thrash. Godlike vocals by Joey Belladonna, before the later stuff where he became too gritty and corny to be taken seriously. Amazing balance of melody and heaviness, and some of the best riffing in the whole genre.

Yes, I would honestly take this over Ride The Lightning, Hell Awaits and even Rust In Peace. It's that good.

Yeah, that's an atomically hot take. It's probably a little underrated, especially Benante's contributions, but thrash for me is generally a lot about the leads, and Spitz is just not anywhere close to Friedman.

I know music is subjective and I'm not saying anything is BETTER than anything else, but I think this is the first time I've ever heard someone say an Anthrax album is a top Big 4 record for them. Thinking about my own favourites, I think my first ranking Anthrax album would be the debut, but I think it'd be somewhere near the 6-7 range after all the usual suspects.

Good on you for having your own opinion and standing behind it.

My favorite Anthrax record, and most peoples' if you were to ask them, is Among the Living. I'd put that right up with the best the other three of the Big 4 had to offer.

Megadeth - Sleepwalker

The first Megadeth song I ever heard.

Misfits - Dig Up Her Bones

Is Michale Graves a complete fucking idiot? Yes.
Do I like this song anyway? Yes.

The Danzig era's better obviously but there are still some Graves songs I'm into.

Violator -- Ordered to Thrash

Ah, great memories. This was the first band I seriously got into when I decided thrash was about my favorite genre! Reliving many great bands I used to listen to from the genre, old and new, and remembering it all over again. Nostalgia.

I always liked Spitz's leadwork, I like how his solos seems to be following the song in form and not just a lot of shred notes.

Manilla Road - Return of the Old Ones

This is some dark, arcane stuff; you can tell this band really lived in their own world and were totally immune to trends.

Wow, that's surprising. My first was "Kill the King" from a Guitar World sampler pack, but my first full album was TSHF, which I thought was way late. Killer song though.

I just searched and oddly enough Subrick also mentioned liking a song awhile back, so that's sort of five, but he's silent now, so he's probably more casual about them. There's too much good music around and not enough time to comment on everything anyway.

NP: Heathen - "Fade Away"

Still in thrash mode, (these threads aren't helping). I've always loved their early stuff, but not gotten around to checking out their later releases until now. They've still got it.

I think it's fantastic too, but would only take it over Hell Awaits from that list.

One aspect that came up the other day was that Matt Fallon wrote some of that album, as did Dan Lilker and Neil Turbin before they were fired. I wonder if their contributions are what helped it become Anthrax's best album. I think Fallon also wrote the best Skid Row stuff IIRC when he was in that band.

Deep Purple - The Battle Rages On

Playing a bunch of their shit in anticipation of the new one this weekend. They have an amazingly expansive oeuvre.

Déhà - The Tree and the Death (feat. Natalie Koskinen)

Nata needs a solo record. She's too good.
The dude doing the screams here is technically impressive, but he could use some acting lessons or whatever. The song is supposed to be like serious; I kept on giggling at his antics.

So cheesy, so sugary sweet, I legit can't stop smiling listening to this band.

Same! Love Dig Up Her Bones, Shining, Saturday Night, Don't Open Till Doomsday. Saw him live doing his two Misfits records start-to-finish last September and it was sad. He limped through the entire set vocally and theatrically.

Sometimes this board reminds me home old I am. I love that some people's introductions to classic bands can be so much different from the different eras before them.

I seriously listened to all of In Flames' later discography, starting with Colony up to I, the Mask to hear how their sound has devolved and crumbled throughout the years, plus for nostalgic reasons.

Colony remains great, Clayman is still my favourite album of theirs, Come Clarity and Sounds of a Playground fading have aged a little better than I expected. Siren Charms and especially Battles I couldn't sit through, because they are so obnoxiously bad.

NP: In Flames - This is Our House

Man, this record is not quite as horrible as the two before it, but damn, this song would have been a perfect fit for that wretched Battles record.

Except that I think we're roughly the same age. And isn't Subrick even older? But it is fascinating how some people get into bands late. Honestly I'm positive there are classic bands I have yet to hear a full album from.

Dwarrowdelf - Undómiel

A nice track, but the way people mispronounce Tolkien's languages seriously has to stop. It can't be that difficult to look it up if you're doing a concept album.

I've never listened to a full Black Sabbath record.

NP: Brutal Sphincter - Make Goregrind Great Again

Ridiculously groovy, weird vocals, and overall a cut above the modern goregrind pool.

Kalmah- Dead Man's Shadow

I think I listed this song like three times already, but now I'm definetly proud to admit this is Kalmah's greatest song, tied with Using the Word. EVERYTHING comes together and the god damn key melody in the beginning is always stuck in my head. I realize it does sound similar to The Groan of Wind melody, but Dead Man's Shadow pretty much shits on anything from The Black Waltz.

Marduk - The Hangman of Prague

This is what i deserve for ignoring Marduk's mid 2000 output. This track manages to be even more intense than the most relentless ones on Panzer Division, i couldn't imagine that this was humanly possible

Shit for some reason I was thinking it was on the one before that for some reason. SH is a great record and still has enough of the earlier TS fire though they were moving in their later MTV direction, it was after that they got pretty lame.

Beyond the Black - Coming Home

Having listened to Horizons through a couple of times now, I can safely say it's not as bad as the singles 'Misery' and 'Golden Pariahs' led me to believe. There's some pretty decent rock/metal on here, definitely on the lighter side, but it's much better than expected.

A hat trick. A real classic of USPM, riffage is killer, melody is awesome but with plenty of aggression.
