Puddle of Mudd - About A Girl

I haven't been able to go a full week without listening to this at least once ever since it became a meme. The vocals are just so hilariously bad... the dude could give the In Flames guy a run for his money.

Bloodbound - Dominion Five

Super furious intricate guitars and Urban breed wailing over top - just a madcap ride of an album, and it's over so quick it almost feels like a punk album in its brevity.

John Zorn - Snakeskin

This is some winding, labyrinthine, jagged and strange stuff.

Tad Morose - Anubis

Never get tired of the big, chugging impact of this main riff. Inimitable. That sense of groove and syncopation is just always so cool to hear in a band.

Anathema - Sleepless

Been listening to a lot of Anathema lately. What a great band.

Judas Priest - Lightning Strikes

Firepower is clearly the best album since their "comeback". Judas Rising is the single best song though IMO.

Dimmu Borgir - Cataclysm Children

I really dig this cut off this record. The furious intro gets me fired up right off the bat.

Mithras - on strange loops

I remember seeing lots of strong reviews for this when it first came out. I still keep seeing it pop up so I decided to give it a go. I'm not feeling these vocals at all. Doubt this will get a second listen.

Seasons of the Wolf - Skulls

This fucking band has always been so good. The guitars are gorgeous yet diabolical and the writing is pure classic headbang fuel.

Black Country Communion - "The Outsider"

I don't know if I like supergroups more than the average person, or if I just only come back to the good ones, but this is definitely one, like Deep Purple, but more blues and less neoclassical.

Black Sabbath - Eternal Idol

There's like three different Black Sabbaths that I all love in totally different ways. This has almost nothing to do with Ozzy-fronted Sabbath, it pushes entirely different buttons. Listened to Mob Rules on my way to work, and this feels different to Dio-fronted Sabbath too, although not that much. I should give "Deep Sabbath" a listen too, never have for some reason.

I really like Firepower - I think a lot of people were disappointed that it wasn't rubbish, so it gets sneered at - decent heavy metal album, and the songs a great live (which it was really matters)

On the other hand, my choice for the morning is a live album -

Visions of Atlantis - Ritual Night (Deep & The Dark Live)

Always makes me smile when I remember that the chorus melody for New Dawn and The Silent Mutiny is the same one used for Heroes of the Dawn on the new album. I do have a massive soft-spot for them, for their catchy ear-worms.

Yeah, they probably work live. Wish I could witness them.

Black Sabbath - Headless Cross

This is so evil. More evil than a lot of black metal out there.

Deep Purple - Whoosh!

Growing on me a lot actually; these are really very good, immaculate songs. Just played pristinely and full of character and richness.

Love that album, and I agree about the live setting. Even more importantly, they actually featured the songs in the setlist and not just the first released single. When I saw them on that tour, they played Firepower, Lightning Strikes, Guardians/Rising From Ruins, No Surrender. Later on in the tour they added Spectre and Necromancer.

It's interesting that when you wander into certain environment you encounter opinions that you didn't know were held at least by certain subsets of fandom. I had thought that Nostradamus was considered one of their weaker albums and that FP was something of a return to form, but I've discovered that there are a few who hold more or less the opposite opinion. Based on some other recent posts I also wonder if the Sneap factor weighs on it. I like the sound of most of his output, and maybe it is a little homogenized and different compared to their early efforts, but it works for me.

I had forgotten that they have a live album with Clementine. I need to put that in my cue.

Grave - Grief

"You'll Never See" was released less than a year after the debut, and you can tell it was maybe a little rushed. Still a lot of good stuff on here.

Leaves' Eyes - Edge of Steel

Specifically the "King of Kings" version, with Liv singing. Got a major soft spot for every album with Liv, honestly.

Black Sabbath - Zero the Hero

This song is centered around a rather tasty doom riff. I love the guitar sound on this album! I am also one of those who find Ian Gillan's wailing a bit grating, so him doing a darker "tough" style just makes it better.

Ulcerate - stare into death and be still

The atmosphere of this album is like a Straitjacket. All enveloping and hopeless, yet warm & safe.

Altaria- Crucifix

Nothing outstanding. I don't think these guys did anything that was more than just good, which is fine with me. Huge fan of the vocals, gotta check out Ghost Machinery after solely for him.

I was really into Edguy back in my days of heavier focus on power metal, but Tobias' voice has aged really poorly for me and I just can't take it in any more than limited doses. It's probably also prevented me from listening more to Avantasia, which I'm thinking I would like more based on my love of Ayreon.

Black Sabbath - Hearts Like a Wheel

Oh, I'm definitely getting the blues feelings from this. It's sad that Seventh Star is so overlooked. Sure, it's a far cry from the glory days of the early-mid 70s and early 80s, but as a bluesy hard rock album it's solid! I don't see why people who enjoy the slower numbers from Heaven and Hell can't enjoy this album.

I still play their middle-era albums once in a while. Great for driving.

Tobi's voice is cool in a more blue-collar way to me; he doesn't sound as virtuoso compared to some guys, but he sounds passionate as fuck and I like his charisma.

Deep Purple - The Long Way Round

Still can't quit...

Abramelin - "Knife-Play"

So I literally just discovered that these guys put out their first new album in 20 years a few months ago. Holy fuck, this stuff rules. Relentless death metal assault. I'm buying this fucker the minute I get home from work today.

I've heard We Don't Need A Hero off of Hellfire Club and it smoked, but beyond that only live cuts from festival videos. I listened to ToS last night and its pretty solid power metal. I'll be digging into it more for sure.

The live album 'Burning Down the Opera' is the best of early-early Edguy for me - all of the best early song, and it's like he borrowed a Maiden crowd's enthusiasm (and a good full production) - it's a great, great listen - they didn't cut the stage banter or the drum solo, so you get the full oldschool experience :D

For me

Priest - One Shot at Glory

Needed some painkillers (woke up at 3AM with a migraine) - didn't have any - so by this time of my day I need Painkiller to get through the last bits of work

The Monuments compilation has a lot of their best songs in one two-hour run, plus a bunch of weird non-album random tracks. It's a good intro to them really.

John Zorn - The Painted Bird

This is fascinating shit man. Colorful and enigmatic. Love the musicality.

Playlist for starting work:

Morgana Lefay - Grand Materia
Angel Dust - Enlighten the Darkness
Tad Morose - Modus Vivendi

Used to play these bands when I was stuck at home over summers in high school, now I'm stuck at home in the summer again for another reason.

Paradise Lost - Darker Thoughts

Still my favorite off the new album. It's not very heavy in a metallic sense, yet it carries such emotional weight that makes it absolutely addictive.
