Sounds like another Mechanical Animals'ish Bowie inspired record. Will have to check it out.
I completely agree with the Bowie reference. What I have heard it sounds very Bowieish. I will never be the fan of him that I am of Portrait, but I always give every new release a chance. Besides Portrait, I usually end up like just a track or two on each new release.

While I like songs off other records and EP the only two I go back to with any regularity are Antichrist Superstar and Mechanical Animals. If this is on the MA end of the spectrum I'll probably like it. But mostly I'm like you, Manson will hit some out of the park but most songs I'm more "meh".

On the Manson note...

Marilyn Manson - Rock 'n' Roll N*gger

One of my favorite covers. Don't care for the original though.

Just talking to Scott Putesky, I believe Mansons ego destroyed that band very early on.

Currently: Anthrax - Persistence of Time

Manson does have a massive ego, then again he's a rock star.

Linkin Park - She Couldn't

A hidden gem from the year 2000. Very different from the Hybrid Theory material we got from before. I love the part before the last chorus where it's just instrumental with a new layer being added one by one.

Mortiis - I am the World

This is some seriously spaced-out stuff! It's a tiny bit too repetitive, but the female vocals are nice and for once Mortiis' dark spoken words don't sound goofy.

Fulci - Tropical Sun

This is making me want to put on the Zombie movie from him. Grindy, heavy, groovy shit... seems real inspired and I love the aesthetic.

Marchen Station - Zion

This is what would happen if Wii Sports gained sentience and tried making power metal. It sounds exactly like the music in that game, but with really quiet guitars and endless double bass.

Midnight - Raw Attack

Just classic Midnight. Original or groundbreaking? Nope, but its awesome. When I'm in a Venom mood I put Midnight on.

Visions of Atlantis - Release My Symphony (live)

1. Whoever did the mixing for their upcoming live DVD needs to never be allowed to mix anything again. The performance is fine, but holy shit. There are times where you can barely hear the small orchestra they're playing on stage with.
2. This song still reminds me of "The Poet and the Pendulum" by Nightwish, and that "release my symphony of innocence and poetry" lyric might as well have been written by Tuomas Holopainen.

Volturian - Haunting Symphony

Yes, it's as bad as the band name & song title suggest. The singer is totally wasted on this stuff too, she'd do better with something like Lacuna Coil.

Fulci - Tropical Sun again

Third time playing this since yesterday afternoon - I put it on at night after watching the Zombi movie it's based off of and damn what an effective pairing. These guys have a real feel for macabre riffs and atmosphere, and the way they mix in soundclips and synths is artful even. Just damn good.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night OST - The Tragic Prince

You like it when a classic video game soundtrack goes into full badass mode and starts off with some kickass power metal? Because it's amazing. The orchestrations are placed perfectly to underscore Alucard's badassery and royal heritage, the riffs are plentiful, and that chorus... god damn. We need more power metal that sounds closer to this - less cheese and more pure epicness.

I should also mention that I haven't found any cover of this song that I could call superior to the original. The Smash Ultimate/Harmony of Despair version in particular is nowhere near as awesome, as that one omits many of the orchestrations in favor of boring metalcore chugs. Best one I know of is this one, though it follows the original very closely:

I'm also listening to My Dying Bride. "Christliar" is playing.

An interesting composition, with good changes of themes, alternating from Katatonia alike melodies to harsher, more pounding ones.

Windir - Fagning

It's like a spiritual successor to Saknet. Not as devastatingly hopeless song, but still very serious in the expression. Total brutality in the beginning and being incredibly melodic as it goes along.

Mi'gauss - Open Fire

The entirety of Open Season is fantastic. Always end up blown away by the song writing chops and riffs this band pumped out. It's a shame they're not more well known.

The Haunted - The Haunted Made Me Do It.

I absolutely loved the 1998-2004-ish era of thrash comeback albums and "Made Me Do It" is right up there w/ the best imo. The riffs, the energy, it was like a scene revived. Also, a lot of nostalgic good times in my 20s back then. That probably has a lot to do w/ it also. Great album imo.

Borknagar - A Tale of Pagan Tongue

Specifically a live version from a show in Worcester, MA in 1999 where the sound was so bad and there were so many tech issues that Vortex gets visibly angrier and angrier as the show goes along.

Those shows are always crazy to watch when you know the tech is not going so well and things are going down hill.

Btw. Sorry for going after you in the Vektor thread. Probably should have backed off instead of attacking like I did. You seem like a cool dude. Cheers.

One of Whoracle's riffier moments. I'm trying to write a review for that album right now as an entry in the In Flames discography review I'm planning.

Threshold - March of Progress

This band has always been an autumn staple for me - something about the way they write melodies just calls for it. Plus both their last few albums came out around then and were heavy in rotation then.
