Catasexual Urge Motivation - The Encyclopedia Of Serial Murders.

Haunting, incredibly atmospheric death/goregrind/doom that functions as an exploration of the minds of serial killers and mass murderers. Every track is genius. Unprecedented guitar style. Unbelievable drum programming which completely destroys the 'machine as replacement for human' paradigm. Perhaps the most genuinely unsettling and soul-eating record I've heard. Pure brilliance through every second.

The one and only Demigod's Slumber of Sullen Eyes. That album is truly a classic.

Fates Warning - Awaken The Guardian

Some of the most transcending and emotionally involving music I've ever heard. This album inspires me as a humanbeing to better myself and is a source of much hope for me. It also flows perfectly making it a dream-like experience to listen it through.

very hard and difficult decision to choose one single one.
maybe "left hand path"'cause it has it all.
first of all it's a major dm classic that influenced the later scene.
second it has the legendary old swedish guitar tone that some of us love.
third it has some memorable and damn perfect songs like:l.h.p./drowned/bitter lose/suppose to rot and but life goes on.
and fourth:it's death metal recorded in the glory days, my personal favourite genre.

1. Dolorian - When All the Laughter Has Gone
2. Dead Can Dance - Within the Realm of the Dying Sun

Now I should explain why...? Just listen to them...

For many reasons I would say Metallica's Kill 'em All. It got me into Thrash a lot more and all of the songs are perfect. I think because it got me into Thrash, I tend to hold it in a higher regard than it should be (based on the quality of the songs), which is why I would say Reign in Blood is number 2. Reign in Blood is the perfect mix of brutality and great songwriting.

Acid Bath - Paegan terrorism tactics (without a doubt)

After that a 3 way tie between:

Black sabbath - heaven and hell
Twisted Tower dire - crest of the martyrs
Opeth - Blackwater park

my favorite ablum and imo one of the best ablums of all time would have to be Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, roger waters really nailed it on this one, the song writing by waters (who wrote dsotm, wywh, animals and the wall) is absolutely genius as well as the musicianship by all members especially david gilmour on "money" and nick mason on "on the run". this album is flawless, from start to finish the songs just flow together and each one is just as impressive as the last. this album started an amazing run of albums put out by floyd in the 70's followed by wish you were here, animals and the wall. each are wayy up there in my all time favorites, but just cant compete with dark side. floyd brings a ridiculous amount of talent and knowledge to the table and it really shows, there on of my favorite bands and have one of the most unique sounds of all time

Fallen Angel of Doom kills every SadEx album.

Fallen Angel Of Doom is awesome, but SadEx did release "The Magus" & the rest of their catalog is solid.

It's actually my favorite death metal album of all-time. My favorite album would be none other than Bathory's The Return... There are so many albums/EP's/demos that follow closely behind.

Gotta go with Iron Maiden's Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. I guess everything about it made me love it when I first bought it: the riffs, the atmosphere, Bruce's vocals, the dark lyrics, the song-writing, the interludes....just everything really. I guess the whole enterprise just appeals to me more personally than a lot of other CDs have, so I gotta say Seventh Son is my favorite at this point in time.

Deep Purple - In Rock (1970)

Undescribable! The mother album of high pitch vocals, low lines, bass driven stuff, integration of keyboards, fast melodies, slow melodies, anger, happiness, speed, whatever you wish emotionally to hear, you´ll find on this. Each track stands out:

1. Speed king - first ever speed metal, expressive vocal, classic rock lyrics
2. Bloodsucker - tight and compact song with high scream final part
3. Child in time - all in one
4. Flight of the rat - mid tempo rocker greatly driven by drums and fantastic vocal line
5. Into the fire - bombastic rocker, massive bass sound, great vocals
6. Living wreck - hard metallic sound, very progressive
7. Hard lovin´ man - guitar orgasmic ride and very complex and tight performance, simply excellent, probably kind of "proto-thrash"

So my hail goes to "In Rock" by Gillan, Glover, Paice, Lord and Blackmore.
6.

Awesome job making assumptions. You can always count on ego-hungry fools on the internet to fulfill that idea.

There are many I feel strongly about, but Humanity: Hour 1 is the one I feel the strongest about, and I have no problems with issuing it my number one favorite album of all time. I feel strong about many albums, but I feel the strongest out of all, unabashedly for Human: Hour 1. I don't what's so hard to grasp about this.

Now, any more assumptions you'd like to make while I'm still here?

Project? Awesome job of you making assumptions. You can always count on... yada yada yada. Just an observation on common human behavior patterns. I'll happily concede on being wrong on your case if you still happen to consider the album your favorite of all time in a year or five.

I made no assumptions, I based my questions exclusively on what you said. Also, your lack of respect towards me (that is, calling me an "ego-hungry fool") was uncalled for.

FasterDisaster wrote:

Then it was bad wording on your part since you clearly feel stronger about Humanity: Hour 1 than about any of those other albums, and therefore it's incorrect to say that you've "felt this strong about a few different albums" (since that implies an equal intensity of the feeling, which is obviously not the case).

FasterDisaster wrote:

Yes, I'd like to make the assumption that you'll get off your high horse and apologize to me for being unnecessarily rude. But something tells me that's a bit too much to ask for.

Well. Being quite interested in music, I can at least guarantee until the end of the year, but I'm not so sure about five years.

@Gelal: I am not on any high horse. You're the one who made assumptions right out of the gate regarding my favorite albums, when I tried to make it clear which has been my favorite since I posted in this topic. Of course I have had past favorites, and yes, I felt strongly about albums before as I have this one. Does this really need to spelled out for you? I'm constantly discovering new music, and YOU being somebody who regulars the Archives should at least be able to attest that most members here are constantly discovering music and finding new passions.

I suggest if you have anything else to post, you take it to PM because your last post successfully dragged this topic into Nowhere Land.

My favorite album can change several times in a year but since about April that album has been:

Agalloch - The Mantle
This album has a very chilling effect that I have yet to hear duplicated by any other album, even by Agalloch themselves. I can't really go much into detail about why I love this album so much. It's just something you have to feel. All I can say is that it's beautiful and paints images of awe-inspiring landscapes into your head.

Again, I made no assumptions (but you yourself just made a few, how ironic). But I guess you just don't understand that, nor the point I was trying to make. In order to not derail this thread any further, I suggest that you PM me if you are interested in getting a simpler explanation. Also, if you decide to PM me for that (and only for that, any insulting PM in the vein of your initial reply to my question will be ignored) I suggest you read your posts, mine, and MacMoney's again, so as to make it easier for me to explain the whole thing to you.

Actually I asked a valid question, which you didn't answer. It was your rude reply that was off-topic (thankfully not enough to actually have any effect on the thread, which is proceeding smoothly so far), not my post. Now, this post of mine is indeed off topic, but if you can do it so can I. Don't expect any further replies from me in this thread, though.

Megadeth - rust in peace for me, awesome compositions, genius leads, nice lyrics, the pinnacle of thrash, before it's downfall, can't wait to see the whole live album at Heavy Mtl.

but like many of you, it's hard to choose

some good choice, i must say i'm happy to see some Reverend Bizarre in the thread, which is my favorite band since a couple of years

Like others have said, this is very difficult and has potential to change, but I shall talk about 3 albums for now.

Burzum- Hvis Lyset Tar Oss.
For me the pinnacle of black metal. Atmospheric, chilling yet at the same time a journey through the motions. Four tracks of perfection ending with one of my favourite ambient tracks of all time. It seems more like a symphony in 4 parts than an album

Dismember- Like an Ever Flowing Stream.

I never thought anything would dethrone Altars of Madness as my favourite death metal album, but this has done it. The album flows so well due to such genius transitions as well as having such heavy influence from punk rock as well as some of the more melodic sides of metal. The songwriting, aggression and production leaves me wanting to leave this disk on repeat every time I listen to it.

Camel- The Snow Goose.

I try so hard to find progressive rock that is not influenced by hard rock/pop rock which I find offensive. This disk is more like a one song album that goes through so many motions it feels more like classical music than prog at some points. The epic song structures and use of a wide variety of instruments also reminds me of some of the songwriting of black metal or death metal musicians later on, which is probably why I feel so strongly about this album.

...who cares? Seriously, who the fuck cares if that's his favorite album? I get exactly what you're trying to convey, but he didn't say anything except that it was his favorite album.

It's tough to choose one. So mine are:

Jag Panzer - Ample Destruction
Slough Feg - Down Among the Deadmen
Virgin Steele - The Marriage of Heaven & Hell Part I

Jag Panzer for being a bastion of everything metal does right, with screaming solos, thunderous vocals and powerful, slamming riffs.

Slough Feg for being a perfect realization of the classic Iron Maiden formula with some of the tightest, most enjoyable songwriting out there - you know these guys were having fun.

Virgin Steele for being an epic maelstrom and pretty much the best Power Metal album of the 90s and better than anything in the 00s. Truly superlative.

I certainly don't care if that's his favourite album. That's why I didn't ask if that album was his favourite. I just pointed out a logical inconsistency in his claims (so no, he didn't just say that it was his favourite album). But worry not, now I know better than to voice my opinion...

As for mine (just to contribute something on topic, seeing how some guys insist on using one of my posts in which I merely ask a perfectly valid question to derail this thread for some reason), I don't have one. But I have a soft spot for Iron Maiden's 'Piece of Mind' because it's the album that got me into metal. Still, there are albums that I think are better than PoM, and the one I like the most varies depending on several things, such as my mood or if I have been listening to a specific genre a lot recently.

This is a tough one but I'm going to have to say Morbid Tales. Simply for the fact that I've been listening to it regularly ever since I got into metal, and I'm still not tired of it at all.

Honorable mentions:
Entombed - Clandestine
Bathory - Bathory
Sarcofago - INRI
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas

Metallica: Ride the Lightning

This was my very first metal album, bought on cassette when I turned 13. Even now I can listen to this over and over without getting tired of it. I love all of the songs on it, particularly "Ride the Lightning", "For Whom the Bell Tolls", and "Creeping Death". It lead me into the genre and I have never looked back.

As of right now, hands down, Mercyful Fate-Melissa.

I was a bigger fan of "Don't Break the Oath" initially, but this album has grown on me, almost to the point of obsession. If i can't instantly think of something i want to listen to, i put this album on by default. It's funny too, because i usually skip the last track. For some reason, it just doesn't do it for me like the other 6 tracks, but i'm sure it will grow on me eventually. I mean seriously, does it get any better than a 10 minute Mercyful Fate song?

I don't really do favorites, but I can certainly say I haven't yet heard anything to top Blut Aus Nord's Memoria Vetusta I: Fathers of the Icy Age. Matchless atmosphere, fucking monumental riffs, and a spine-tingling sense of mythic mysticism combine to form a timeless piece of sincerely magical metal. It always makes me wonder how old Vindsval was when he recorded it. Then I feel bad.

Good call. What an incredible album. I'm going to assume you've listened to Part II? Not as raw, but certainly epic, and not to sound corny, but emotional. What a great fucking band.

Yes! This album just gives off such an incredible vibe. The whole sound is so vast in scope and yet so gripping.

As for my personal favorite though, I'd have to go with:

Death - Symbolic.

Holy fucknuts, that's all I have to say. All I have to say, but I'll elaborate. The songwriting, the solos, the lyrics, the riffs man, the fucking RIFFS, everything about this album is just superb. Every song is so perfectly crafted. It manages to balance technicality and accessibility, as well as heaviness and memorability, better than any album I have heard before or since. To me, it was Chuck's obvious peak. This is the gold standard by which I judge other metal albums, and I have yet to find any album as utterly flawless as Symbolic.

I can't pick one. But for me, it would have be either Iron Maiden, Master of Puppets, or Into Glory Ride.

Metallica-Ride the Lightning. It got me into metal, the first time I heard the title track I was so amazed I listened to it all night.

Green Day-Kerplunk. Mike Dirnt is one of the most underrated bass players, only the critics mentions him. Just great set of songs and really good production that added atmosphere, decent leads as well which is surprising.

Death-Symbolic. Probably the best DM album of all time. Great songs, amazing riffs, amazing solos, good bass, amazing drums, and a very good and underrated rhythm guitar.

Suffocation-Effigy of the Forgotten. Definitive Brutal Death Metal. Heavy and chunky and just all around great. The last four grunts of the title track (Mullen says 'I must defy him') get me every time.

Opeth-Orchid, to me their best album, maybe tied with Still Life. I love every second of it, heavy and beautiful at the same time with amazing riffs and insane growls and even shrieks.

The Faceless-Akeldama. I think it's better than Planetary Duality, more memorable and some sick riffs. Really catchy but brutal, not BR0Otal but Brutal.
