We have a couple of amazing threads for 80s-90s OSDM, but I think the "new school of OSDM" or whatever you prefer to call it deserves some appreciation too! There's actually a lot of good stuff out nowadays, like Blaspherian and what-not. Hopefully we can get some more obscure recommendations in here too.

Image
In the Shadow of the Cross by Omision. Omision are a Mexican band who play some really kickass stuff. It ranges from more mid-paced to pretty fast and aggressive. Has somewhat of a grind edge like Terrorizer here and there.

Image
Venenum by Venenum. Originally a demo, it was remastered and released as an EP late last year. The actual death metal is great, nice and atmospheric. There are some acoustic tracks as well. That cover art alone deserves a mention, eh?

Image
The Chills by Horrendous. Awesome sounding US death metal with some doom metal qualities and a Swedish-like sound. Bits of Autopsy, Entombed, and other classics can be heard. Probably the first truly great album of 2012 in my opinion.

Tormented - Rotten Death

This album sounds hot. Uses the whole Stockholm style guitar sound, but seems to have this extra hellish sound to the guitar.

yeah man, really cool cover art.
tormented are awesome! everything of theirs i've heard is top notch apart from that deep purple cover [black knight?]
scrap that, i was thinking of Infestdead

do rotten sound fit in this category?

Rotten Sound are more more deathgrind than OSDM...

Tribulation - The Horror
Repugnant - Epitome of Darkness
Dead Congregation - Graves of the Archangels (I actually don't really consider this a "revivalist" or "retro" album, but it fits in because it's closer to that than the rest of the DM scene, imo)

I won't win much respect in this thread for saying it, but Bloodbath are my favourite OSDM revival band. I also like Blood Mortized, and I'm not completely sold on Tribulation but they are growing on me.

Eh, I think the criticism against them isn't entirely justified. I don't find them as amazing as you do, but I have no real issues with them. Besides, I've noticed they toned done the obvious Swedish OSDM influences a bit with newer releases anyway, so even though they've become more modern, they've still got their own sound so to speak. Anyway, time for a few more posts. Again, I think it'd be nice to try and keep the posts more limited to obscurer stuff. Disma for example are absolutely phenomenal, but they've already been on so many year-end-lists by now that they're more well known.

Image
Gods of Death by Cianide. These guys have been around for awhile for those who don't know. They've polished up their sound a little, but it's still thick guitars, bass heavy drums, and crushing vocals in a death doom style. I absolutely love these guys, personally.

Image
Karnarium by Karnarium. Awesome death metal from Sweden. The bass is the highlight of this album for once, it's actually audible and kinda groovy at times. Great stuff.

Image
The Calling Depths by Lvcifyre. Insanely awesome blackened death metal. More intense than most "OSDM revival" and I suppose it'd be pushing it to actually use that term in some regards, but lyrically and spiritually it stays true to OSDM in my opinion.

Image
The Sun of Moloch by Wrathprayer. Holy mother of fuck do I want this album. It was supposed to come out December 31st, but it's not uploaded on their Bandcamp yet and I don't think Nuclear War Now Productions has released it on physical format yet, or if they have it must be limited or something. Only one track from it is online, but it sounds awesome.

It's by the Russian artist Denis Forkas Kostromitin. He's made some other really good art for metal artists like Dead Reptile Shrine, Horseback, Ave Maria, and so forth. That Wrathprayer cover is my favorite, but the cover for Locrian and Horseback's split album is really, really good too.

Holy ball-tearing hell, that artwork is intense. Love it.

I'll contribute with a couple:
Image

Gorephilia - Ascend To Chaos. Finnish old-school worship done well, with a knack for some damn heavy song craft. Simplistic, but pummeling.

Image

Corpsessed - The Dagger And The Chalice. Another Finnish outfit, with a skin flaying, blistering approach. Very dark, claustrophobic stuff. Excellent.

Image

Cruciamentum - Engulfed In Desolation

Along with the brilliant Convocation Of Crawling Chaos demo, this band is probably more well known by now, but takes nothing away from the intensity of their devotion to death metal.

Image

Bastard Priest - Ghouls Of The Endless Night. Swedish as hell, with a nasty punkish edge to it, this album along with the debut is as old-school worshiping as it gets.

Image

Claws - Absorbed In The Nethervoid. More Finnish old-school brilliance. The monstrous, murky guitar and demonic vocals are a particular highlight, along with ripping song writing.

Image

Invidious - In Death. Rather obscure, and off kilter Swedish group who don't believe in holding back on the filth.

Image

Obliteration - Nekropsalms. Stunning, Norwegian death metal taking cues from most of the 80's and 90's breed of death metal. Highly recommended.

Might come back with some more later. Tired now.

I kinda want to post Epitome of Darkness on here, but its about a decade old and is kinda too obvious...

Image

So, I'll post The Horror by Tribulation instead. I always think this album sounds like a 1970s Italian horror film soundtrack sped up and played backwards. Great atmosphere.

Heard good things about Maim and Morbus Chron as well.

Most of these are super obvious. And Epitome of Darkness is not almost a decade old, Hircine, its from 2006!

Crucifiction - Portals to the Beyond
Image

Hatespawn - Ascent from the Kingdom Below
Image

Necrovorous - Funeral for the Sane
Image

Kaamos - S/T
Image

SECONDING THE MIGHTY DEAD CONGREGATION AND CRUCIAMENTUM!

Grave Miasma - Exalted Emanation
Image

Repugnant - Epitome of Darkness
Image

Funebrarum - The Sleep of Morbid Dreams
Image

Necros Christos - Triune Impurity Rites
Image

Drowned - Viscera Terrae

lol, looked it up. I thought I was talking about the Hecatomb EP. Which came out in 1999. Derp of the highest order.

EDIT: turns out it was recorded in 2002, which is what I was actually thinking of.

How time has flown! When I think of 'a decade ago' I still think of the 90's. That is why I don't consider anything that came out in the 00's original 'old school', only 'old school revival'.

Atonement Ritual by Embrace of Thorns. They've been getting a bit more recognition lately. Great mix of death and black metal, especially black metal but with and OSDM riffing flare.

Image
Host of Rotting Flesh by Daemonicus. Killer album from some Swedes. Very chuggy, no real emphasis on fast blastbeats. It's actually very OSDM sounding because of how simplistic it often is. Totally legit, brah.

Image
Eroded by Eroded. A compilation album of the bands two EPs. It's really good Swedish styled DM from Italy. Not much to say about it actually, but yeah, 'tis good.

Image
Triumph and Revenge by Helcaraxë. If people know of this band, it's because of their second album, which was more melodic in a sense, but even then it was still pretty intense. Father Befouled did a split with this band once too that's well worth checking out.

Supreme Pain - Divine Incarnation

While this isn't entirely OSR, it's got plenty of old school elements, and is definitely one of my favorite albums of 2011. Think a lot of the dark atmosphere/melody of the Chasm or Immolation, and it's a good idea of what you'll hear.

Speaking of The Chasm, Infinitum Obscure's album called Sub Atris Caelis is pretty good DM in that style.

Oh and I forgot to mention Undergang

Image

They have that fuzzy Stockholm sound, but they don't really clone Swedish DM. The riffing is pretty different from those types of bands. They have a new album coming out on February 1st, so that's one to definitely look forward to.

Both are great, I think The Conquered are Burned is a bit better though. Funebrarum's Sleep of Morbid Dreams (Already mentioned) is my favourite album of the whole movement. That one is godly, perfect combinations of US murky doominess, and New York bludgeoning, combined with Finnish weirdness and catchiness.

The Spell of Damnation by Ominous Crucifix. Another band to keep an eye on, their first album came out earlier this month I believe. Very good stuff reminiscent of Necros Christos, Asphyx, etc.

Image
Through the Eyes of Death by Morta Skuld. A collection of various older, remastered 90s demos and what-not. Pretty good stuff.

Post subject:  Re: Old School Death Metal Revivalism Gems

Infernus Serpest - "Born Of The Fire And The Black Light"
outstanding debut. some similarities with Kaamos. fast and intense swedish sounding Death Metal.

Afasia - "Confinement"
crushing Death/Doom Metal.

seconding Morbus Chron. "Sleepers In The Rift" is a fucking masterpiece. same with Miasmal debut.

the last Deteriorot album, "The Faithless" is fucking cool, but i don't know if this count, since the band is old (first demo came out in 1992).

also, if you like old South American Death/Thrash Metal, try to get the Deathly Scythe's demo, "Will Of Death"... pure Sadism/Atomic Aggressor/Death Yell/early Sepultura worship.

Edit: the Wrathprayer track on NWN's bandcamp sounds amazing... that one songs shreds anything on the demo (the tape sounds like a washing machine... but i kinda like it)

Lifeless form Dortmund Germany are one of my favorite new OSDM acts. They are damn catchy and heavy as hell. They do ride the coattails of early Stockholm dm, but without being complete clones, and definitely have a distinct style all their own.

I highly recommend their album Beyond the Threshold of Death.
