Shame this one hasn't been added yet. Very filthy with grinding riffs that are somewhat thrashy. The whole atmosphere is just completely grotesque. I have heard them described as a mix of early Death, Asphyx and Dismember and that sounds about right.

Completely under rated dark death metal ala Ignivomous, Mitochodrion, Portal, etc...

Are there any of these bands that are playing some sort of shitty rehashing of dull Finnish/Swedish dm from unimportant bands in the nineties, any American-style dm in the vein of Suffocation or hell even Cannibal Corpse? Is it really that trendy?

Check Nailgun Massacre which I put on the last page for something a little different. They are kind of like Impetigo with a vocalist that sounds like Martin Van Drunen. I'm sorry you don't like Swedish or Finnish death metal. You are missing out on some great material.

A few things here. First, Incantation is by far the biggest and most widespread influence of this new scene, and they are an American band. Second, I wish there were more flat out Finnish sounding bands around, you've basically got Lantern, and in some way the last Funebrarum (Pretty much if Abhorrence kept going + Incantation), and that's it. There's a few Adramelech leads about, but almost unanimously these Finnish touches are just a few little bits of decoration to the usual sound. Swedeath pretty uncommon by and large when we're talking about this particular movement. Bands are fully dedicated to it when they want to be Swedish, but there aren't too many of them. Never liked Swedeath in the first place, so I don't mind too much. Suffocation had a huge amount of imitators before this new revitalism thing.

Finally, Horrendous sound like early Death, if that's what you're going for.

On the topic of Finnish death metal I will add this one.
Desecresy - Arches of Entropy (2010)
Image
Made up of a couple members from Slugathor and you can certainly here the resemblance particularly with the groove. The sound is quite murky and has some eerie lead work. The vocals are slightly overpowering in the mix but not too bad. A good album but I think they could do better and hopefully the new album will be a real hit.

Flourishing - The Sum of All Fossils
Sick record. One of my favorites in the past 15 years in modern death metal. It has some crazy Gorguts styled riffs with some sick bass leads and some shoegazey interludes. And believe me, its done in the least "trendy" way possible. Such a devastating album.

Denial (Mex)'s Catacombs of the Grotesque is fucking killer. Think a mix of Demilich and Bolt Thrower with serious Lovecraftian atmosphere.

I still think that Denial aren't really in the whole old school revival thing, but they are absolutely stunning.

ASCENDED - Temple of Dark Offerings MCD

This is what I call a "modern classic". Somber and harmonic Death/Doom from Finland, quite reminiscent of Depravity, Funebre or early Amorphis. Too bad they called it quits before recording a full-length.

It's probably not available on any distro anymore. The copies I had in stock some months ago sold out in a few days.
Good luck on eBay! ;)

Excellent young band that ended far too soon.

All their material is high quality.

I only have their stuff on cassette, besides the split.

The split is still around by the way. I bought mine from Stu.

Highly recommended. Amazing piece of work.

For those looking for death metal with various cryptic atmosphere and an amazing blend of different influences, then this one cannot be passed up. For a reference, if you like early Soundgarden (first two / three full-lengths) then that sound blended with some despicable (Gorguts-y) death metal is in the ballpark of what you're getting.

FERAL - Old school death n roll!

EXCORIATE - pity they disbanded. Really good album

DEATHEVOKATION - a personal favourite, highly enjoyable album

BLASPHERIAN - not a mention for Blaspherian yet? Personally, "Infernal Warriors of Death" is one hell of a killer Immolation influence album.

Very good indeed. Just finished listening to the album and I really liked it. I wouldn't put it in the same league as Portal or Mito, not yet at least (I love those bands), but you're right, for people who dig this kind of DM this is really worth checking.

Seconding this, and the description. Awesome record, very doomy OSDM - the production has this incredibly menacing 'hollowness' that really adds to the deep, bass-heavy atmosphere; it almost gives the impression of standing at the edge of a deep pit, being pulled down. Eerie.

Post subject:  Re: Old School Death Metal Revivalism Gems

^That Sanguis Imperem was decent but lost its edge fast, very heavy and very crushing but boring much like Angelcorpse, Bolt thrower, and the other bands that influenced them.

Gotta post this one even if it may have been done before, easily one of the best OSDM albums I've heard every moment is fucking savage.

The Sleep of Morbid Dreams is good to be sure. However, I'm much more partial to the doomier, much more creeping horror-atmospheried Beneath the Columns of Abandoned Gods. The slower, more deliberate pace works much better.
