Quite the strange find today at my local Goodwill. In addition to "...and Justice for All" and "Load", I found "The $9.98 CD". Or at least, thought I did.

I have an obviously original booklet and back insert (confirmed by the catalog number which places the booklet from the 1991 Elektra CD release: http://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Metallica/The_%245.98_EP_-_Garage_Days_Re-Revisited/498239), and a CD case that looks appropriately dated for the early 90s (although of course there's no way to know for sure). But the disc is just an obvious CD-R, with a strange skull design all across the front. No matrix numbers or other identifiers on the disc, and the "burn marks" of a CD-R are obvious. It's pretty beat up but the songs all ripped to iTunes just fine.

Images are spoilered for size:

So not exactly the rare find one might have hoped for, just 1/2 of it! But at $2 a piece I'll take 'em. The cashier said those were actually brought in today. Someone decided they just didn't have the metal fire anymore!

EDIT: Images are now not stupidly large.

Nice find there!! I bought that on vinyl when it first came out, back when I was a total Metallica fanboy and the prospect of listening to ANY new Metallica release was pretty exciting to me. (I always thought it was ironic, the "not very produced" EP ended up having a better production than the full length that came out a year afterward.)

Maybe the original CD got wrecked/lost so they just burned one off to play

Yeah I'd say that's the most likely explanation. The inserts are genuine for sure.

Things like that happen. I have a copy of Obituary - The End Complete which has the remaster inserts but the disc is an original

I'm glad I've given Metallica their fair chance after years of stopping at Ride. Justice is long but in no way not respectable and Dyers Eve is quite the thrasher for this band. And I really should dislike Load on some kind of principle but I just don't; with the mindset of "don't expect heavy metal", it's some nice hard rock. I'll never actively seek out Puppets to complete the first 4 but for a $2 bargain bin find someday, it'll be picked up.

I have grown from being an UltraBoris follower to enjoying most of Puppets. But I can't call it the best. Ride has the title track which is enough to do it (that long Kirk solo section is godly), and of course Creeping Death (another awesome solo).

Bought Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain, off of Amazon from a verified seller but the quality seems a bit off.

It was sold as new and was shrink wrapped but the wrapping was non-standard (kinda flimsy, had to open from the bottom left corner instead of the top left/right)
The case itself feels like a replacement jewel case, much lighter than any other case I own. The booklet is grainy and matte and the colors bleed together, definitely lower quality than other releases. The CD seems very close to others matrixes online but I would like to double check, images below.

Did I get duped by an Amazon seller? Or this consistent with other versions of the release?

^That album's booklet is meant to be printed on rough matte-finish paper. Plus the artwork is already blurry on purpose. Matrix looks fine too so I doubt it's a bootleg.

I have that Agalloch made by The End Records, in slipcase, matrix on mine looks totally different.
And booklet is printed on glossy paper.

What is confusing is it seems that the album covers have changed as well.
http://www.dammerungarts.com/ashes-agai ... grain.html
@drobowik - is your booklet the darker one or the light one? (or possibly was the booklet always dark, and slipcase changed)? either way I didn't receive mine in a slipcase yet carries Catalog # TE070

Hmm, is the lettering on your CD raised at all? Like if you ran your finger across it, does it feel different than the rest of disc? It could just be the lighting that giving it a 3d effect...my copy is completely flat.

Here are the rest of the pictures in case someone can spot something off..if there is anything at all.

Exactly, lettering is raised.

Checked your pics, my backsleeve is also different, on mine is only those two lines "White as the falling snow Black as our citadels burned against the sky". Nothing more. Probably because of slipcase, all label info and barcode is on slipcase.

Maybe you have kind of Amazon edition?

Still looks fine to me, it's probably just a repress. Also if you look closely at the matrix there should be tiny print which shows the exact time and date when the disc was manufactured - it's unique to that particular matrix type, which is from a facility that's frequently used by most of the bigger US indie labels.

Still strange, that after quality first press comes quite lousy manufactured repress.

It does seem odd that the disc label has white underneath. Still doesn't particularly look like a bootleg, more like a crappy repress if anything. If it was a bootleg they would have probably tried harder to replicate the original

So there was a Morpheus Descends - Ritual Of Infinity cassette tape listed on Discogs this week for $10 euro dollar things
I had it on my wantlist so stuck it in my basket to keep an eye on it, the guy who had it listed I noticed had loads of submissions for Philippine tapes...
I found so many issues with his submissions, voting and commenting away as I do.

Anyway I sent him a message asking about the tape, he replies with it's a Polish version, listed as an original US version :nono:

I have a question about Darkthrone reissues.

Was the 2001 jewel case reissue of Transilvanian Hunger remastered or remixed in any way? I know that 2003 reissue in digipack was remastered but what about that 2001 one?

Discogs has no mention of remastering on the 2001 versions but do for the 2003 versions
Are you trying to avoid remastered sound? the 2003 reissues have interviews and possibly video content too
I don't know why Peaceville reissue stuff so often, it's a pain in the arse!

Vociferian - Glorificia Bestials

Is it just me or does this have a poorly done mastering job? it sounds like the songs cut off and have gaps and blips/artefacts in them

I just bought a copy of Motorhead's Inferno from a third party seller on Amazon. It says "Copyright of Sanctuary Records," however the album page on Metallum mentions nothing about any editions of that album being released through Sanctuary. Is this a bootleg?

Maybe it just hasn't been added yet, it's not on the Discogs page either, although I do see some bootlegs of it there
http://www.discogs.com/Mot%C3%B6rhead-Inferno/master/43431

What was it sold to you as? it has to match the description.

Here is the Amazon page. It says Sanctuary under the label. It also says Enhanced CD.

2008 Sanctuary reissue with enhanced content sounds about right
photos of the matrix and the rear cover would be helpful if you can

I just got Dying Fetus - Reign Supreme and Spawn Of Possession - Incurso on cd and they both have really weird textured paper. Instead of the usual textured paper, it's a very glossy almost plastic paper. Is this normal for relapse records circa 2012? the matrix of both cds match up with Discogs.

^Sounds a bit like the original Regain pressing of Behemoth - Demigod, that had some extremely glossy booklet paper. Generally bootlegs will have rather cheap rough paper rather than overly glossy paper.

There's a lot of Miasma stuff around now, I'm wondering if it's been bootlegged recently.
This is the legendary Austrian death metal band whose releases are notoriously expensive

Anything on Lethal is likely to be bootlegged if it's suddenly all over the place. I only have that ugly 2-for-1 Napalm reissue of Changes/Love Songs with the Love Songs cover bunged in the corner of the Changes artwork, and even that one is scarce as fuck now.

Miasma "Changes" going to be reissued on CD/LP soon, probably the reason why crazy sellers want to sell it now, later it could be less possible when this album is available in the market. Just opinion :-)

A reissue of anything Miasma is long overdue and will be very well received indeed

Interesting news too given the recent Disastrous Murmur reissue

Hey guys, need your help in identifying if this is a bootleg copy. This dude is selling it for twice what a brand new CD is but then again this is a long OOP classic. I was meaning to buy it but then someone out of the blue tells me that this is a bootleg. The matrix code is supposedly 88561-1144-2 according to the seller.

Cadaver ...In Pains

Chinese bootleg, luckily the guy was honest with the matrix info...
If it's on Ebay report it as a bootleg

Nah, it's not on eBay. He's selling it in an FB group I'm part of. Apparently this dude has sold bootleg stuff before (Imperial Doom) and I was warned by some well-meaning friend.

Thanks!

We should probably be calling these sorts of things Counterfeits, not Bootlegs.. Bootleg means an unofficial recording (like a live show) released without the band's consent.
