When I first time have heard Voivod I didn't hook up on them, but after half year or little bit more I have tried listened one more time and finally understand music of these Canadians geniuses. So, I think that music of Voivod required a lot of attention from listener. My favourite albums would be Killing Technology, Dimension Hatröss, Nothingface, The Outer Limits, Katorz and Infini. Some day ago I listened new single of Voivod and can't wait new album, I hope it will be awesome.

When i want to shove a Voivod cd in my Marantz player,i always end up with either War and Pain or Killing Technology. So i guess those
are my favorite albums from them. The outer limits is probably the third album that i've listened to the most. After that album i didn't really care
for VoiVod anymore. The albums with the new singer were just meehh. Though i enjoyed seeing them on Dynamo open air back then, playing a
classic and then a new song alternatively. I'm gonna play Rooarrr,Dimension Hatröss,Nothing face and Angel Rat later this day. Want to find
out why i never played those much. Well Roooaarr is good,i know that. But i found the other 3 always a bit....well....too soft i guess. Even if Dimension Hatröss
is somewhat in the Killing Technology direction.

Post subject:  Re: Voivod

I just picked up War and Pain over the weekend and I'm completely floored by it. They may have been young and rather crude at the time but there are still some really heavy-handed atmospherics that take the thing to a different level. I was giddy when I heard that intro riff to the title track, if that isn't a homage to Black Sabbath's eponymous track I don't know what is. I'm actually kind of shocked not one review for the debut mentions this striking similarity; I guess it was too obvious.

Really stunning piece of work, those bluesy future-licks that Piggy sheds off at the end of nearly every riff keep tickling my funny bone. One of the most interesting/unique soloing styles around.

Post subject:  Re: Voivod

most people don't mention the Sabbath homage because they still think WaP sounds like Kill 'em All.

Was that done in MS Paint? Come on, Voivod can do better than that.

The cover is positively hilarious, but it won't matter if the album is as good as I expect it to be.

I love it. This cover is perfect for Voivod. I'm ready for this badboy.

Post subject:  Re: Voivod

Cover looks horrible, but I'm still holding out hope for the album. I made this very quickly and without much effort to post on a different forum - I think the same basic art could look a lot better without the shitty Photoshop gradient work and heavily saturated colors all over it:

Agreed, your artwork looks a lot better!

Post subject:  Re: Voivod

Voivod's always had a comic book vibe - which is awesome (not that I give a shit about comics) but this one's just badly done. Definitely looks like a little (stupid) kid did it.

Post subject:  Re: Voivod

No it doesn't. The line art was in all likelyhood done by a professional comic artist and I actually like it. What sucks is the coloration, mostly the shitty contrast between the color of the sky and everything else and the artificial looking gradients.

It was pretty clearly done by Away, the drummer of Voivod who drew all their previous art. He did everything by hand in the early years, but lately has been doing more computer work. He has a distinctive style and themes, but this is far from his best work. Agree with you though that the line art looks a lot better than the obvious Photoshoppery of the color fills.

Post subject:  Re: Voivod

I think it's awful, a shame considering I like his early artwork. This is just ugly and looks like something a 12 years old would draw on paint (a good 12 years old though).

Author:  inhumanist [ Fri Oct 26, 2012 4:54 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Voivod

Give this some detailed fills drawn by hand and it could look pretty cool I'm sure.

dalecooper wrote:

Right, but in a way he is a professional comic-stlye artist... whatever.

Post subject:  Re: Voivod Discussion + new album, Target Earth

Great concept, poor execution. That's all I have to say about that artwork.

PS: Dalecooper's version IS quite better, though it still doesn't fix the ugliness. Quasimodo will always be Quasimodo, no matter how nicely you dress him.

Post subject:  Re: Voivod Discussion + new album, Target Earth

That looks awful. Probably would be great with a competent art style, but what the hell? We had an MS paint parody thread and this cover would fit perfectly in it.

Author:  inhumanist [ Sat Oct 27, 2012 6:43 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Voivod Discussion + new album, Target Earth

The lineart and gradients couldn't really be done in paint. It just looks paint-ish because the shitty jpg compression ruins the antialiasing.

It's a good song. Not great like the last one but the album's gonna be great at this rate.

Post subject:  Re: Voivod Discussion + new album, Target Earth

That rocked. This kind of sounds like a lost link between Dimension Hatross and Nothingface (with maybe a dash of The Outer Limits) so far.

Post subject:  Re: Voivod Discussion + new album, Target Earth

This song is nearly as good as the last one. I'm all in on this album. Still too bad about the art, but what can you do...

Write Away a letter asking him to add hand drawn texture?

Post subject:  Re: Voivod Discussion + new album, Target Earth

I'm guessing they had a contest for 'best 6th-grade class artwork for a metal album'...

Most of Away's artwork is killer. This is... :gay:

Post subject:  Re: Voivod Discussion + new album, Target Earth

Yeah, the new artwork is just terrible. I'm not sure why he insists on using the computer, his hand-drawn stuff was killer.
Oh well, the music is awesome so it's not a big deal.

Reminds me of Angel Rat, albeit a little thrashier. That intro, though!

But basically the fact that it sounds like Voivod is enough for me. 2013 will be off to a good start!

According to his own words, he has done computer art since Nothingface:

Away wrote:
And uhh, I believe it was in 87’ when I bought an Amiga computer, a Commodore, and I started doing computer art, and starting on the 5th cover--I started doing computer art and I never stopped since. And since then there’s been an outstanding development in the computer software—3D and 2D software, so that’s where I’m at right now. I always try to upgrade myself and come up with more spectacular stuff, you know?

Voivod is such an awesome band. Great people too! To me, they're a good example of a band that can be a bit of an acquired taste and it's very enjoyable to listen to one of their record after a while and notice things from a different angle.

I like all their work but to me the better stuff is up to and including my favorite, Nothingface.

Mongrain is pretty good and seems to respect the band and Piggy's legacy to the best of his ability, so I'm looking forward to Target Earth but I have to admit, Voivod without Piggy feels to me kinda like what Sabbath without Iommi would.

Well sorry, I didn't know that. I'm having the same problem with the new Rotting Christ tracks right now, these country restrictions are just annoying these days.

But here's a link that should work for the rest of you guys: http://music.cbc.ca/#/play/Dave-Shumka/ ... rget-Earth

I think the true "voivodian" sound is the disonant guitar, something really well done by Mongrain, and the "blower bass". So to me will be more like "no Blacky- no Voivod". Sure, i like every think Voivod has done, but nothing can touch the albums with Blacky playing on it. This and Snake faces ahahahahah.

BTW, Sabbath will record the new album "13" without Bill Ward... so they can fuck off.

I dig it. Sounds to me in parts very similar to their classic 80's sound. They've managed to make a Voivod record without Piggy.

My thoughts exactly. It's a very, very good record, especially taking into consideration the fact that D'Amour isn't present anymore.

The lines on the album cover are too thick. Other then that I like the album art and everything I've heard from this. Definitely would like to pick this up if I can.
