Post subject:  Is Dave Lombardo out of Slayer?

According to this statement on Facebook he is being replaced on the bands Australian tour dates and his future looks uncertain with the band - http://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?s ... 3877627819

Quote:
statement From Dave Lombardo Regarding Slayer Australian Tour 2013

I want to personally apologize to all of our fans in Australia who have bought tickets for the tour expecting to see me in my usual place on the drums.

So that you all know the truth, as of the end of the business day on February 14th, I was notified that I would not be drumming for the tour in Australia. I’m saddened, and to be honest I am shocked by the situation.

Last year, I discovered 90% of Slayer’s tour income was being deducted as expenses including the professional fees paid to management, costing the band millions of dollars and leaving 10% or less to split amongst the four of us. In my opinion, this is not the way a band’s business should operate. I tried rectifying it by letting my band mates know, and Tom and I hired auditors to figure out what happened, but I was denied access to detailed information and the necessary back up documents.

I spent the Christmas and New Year holidays realizing I had toured all over the world in 2012, but yet, had not been paid (except a small advance) or provided a proper accounting for a full year's sweat and blood. On top of this, I was told that I would not be paid until I signed a long form contract which gave me no written assurance of how much or on what basis management would deduct commissions, nor did it provide me access to the financial budgets or records for review. It also forbade me to do interviews or make statements having to do with the band, in effect a gagging order.

Last Monday, I sat down with Kerry and Tom to rehearse for Australia and to propose a new business model that I felt was the best way forward for Slayer to confidently protect itself so we could do what we do best . . . play for the fans. Kerry made it clear he wasn’t interested in making changes and said if I wanted to argue the point, he would find another drummer. On Thursday, I arrived at rehearsals at 1 pm as scheduled, but Kerry did not show. Rather, at 6:24 pm I received an email from the lawyers saying I was being replaced for the Australian dates.

I remain hopeful that we can resolve our issues. But once again, I sincerely apologize to all of our fans in Australia who spent their money expecting to see the 3 of us original Slayer members.
I look forward to seeing you in the future.

Sincerely,
Dave Lombardo

It will certainly be interesting to see how this develops

"I sincerely apologize to all of our fans in Australia who spent their money expecting to see the 3 of us original Slayer members."

What does he mean by that? Now, my Slayer knowledge isn't the greatest, but I am certain all four of them are original members, not just three. Am I missing something here? It could just be a typo, I suppose.

That's because I think Jeff Hanneman is still out on "sick leave". He had that arm infection from which he's still recovering I suppose. Gary Holt has been his replacement for all the shows that happened last year.

Bummer for Dave. Hope it gets sorted out if whatever he said is legit. Kids, that's what happens when you have a shit management with zero transparency.

Gary Holt is still playing with Slayer in place of Jeff Hanneman. Kerry King just put out a statement yesterday saying that he's uncertain when Jeff will play guitar with Slayer again.

Ah, makes sense. Cheers for clearing that up.

OP: Eh, sounds like a shitty thing to do from Kerry. I have heard that he is an asshole, though I've no idea how valid that is. Can't say I'm too concerned about it though, I'm only familiar with their early material. Still shitty when a band with a mostly solid and consistent line-up has a problem like this.

This statement certainly paints out Kerry King to be a huge dick. Dave Lombardo and Jeff Hanneman ARE Slayer. Fuck KK. I really hope things work out for Lombardo.

Post subject:  Re: Is Dave Lombardo out of Slayer?

I've always gotten the impression that Lombardo only returned to Slayer for the cash, as he made it very clear that his relationship with King was strained after he quit. I wouldn't be surprised if he leaves the band again unless they start redistributing their cash flow. Real shame, but maybe this means that next Fantomas album will finally happen.

I guess Lombardo and Hanneman out of the band, means that the new Slayer album may be worse than the new Darkthrone is. Fuck that would be quite the undertaking, lets hope that this turns out not to be the case!

All of us drummers can hope for however that if Dave is actually fired in full the band does open auditions through the internet a la Forbidden.

If the trend of Slayer members leaving the band continues, we might be seeing Kerry King and the Travelling Slayer Experience some time in 2015.

It's strange to see Lombardo taking some flak. This year the festival these guys are playing is having a lot of shitty luck with drummers, since bands are pulling out or replacing drummers left, right and centre, and Tom got sick and pulled out of one shows at the same festival two years ago. It must be a place for bad luck.

And then there were two. They should probably hang it up after this next album, but I doubt that'll happen with Kerry King. Does this mean the return of Paul Bostaph?

Certainly not the nicest move, but King is looking after his investment. He's put in a lot of work into the band and with Lombardo being as unreliable as he sometimes has been and then wanting to move in on Kerry's finances, he decided not to deal with that. I imagine King is part of the management that gets the big cut of the fees.

I mean, let's face it: These big bands (Slayer, Metallica, Maiden) - or even smaller ones - aren't a group of friends doing music for fun or a group of artists coming together to make profound masterpieces. They're actual companies out for profit and are run like that. Certainly perhaps quite assholish a move from Kerry King, but an understandable one nevertheless.

Then again, who really gives a damn? It's not like Slayer has produced anything worth listening in over twenty years.

Man, it's so disenfranchising as a fan to read this kind of bullshit. You'd think after 30+ years as a band, Slayer would have this kind of thing figured out. Can bands really not communicate on such a basic level these days? Lombardo is one of my favourite drummers, and Slayer concert just wouldn't be a proper Slayer concert without him. Really dumb shit. Figure you it out, guys.

See, there's one thing that bothers me. As a musician.

They had to get a lawyer to tell him that he won't be on the tour? Couldn't he just have called him himself and told him that?
These guys have played together since their teens, they were probably good friends. Somehow they turned the band itself to a business, and business only.

I never realised but looking at wikipedia and the writing credits for songs, i seems like Hanneman was the one of wrote the most/best stuff

Ironically King seemed to start writing more around the time of GHUA.

The fact that Dave Lombardo is sitting at home makes me believe that Tom and Kerry are getting kickbacks from the management company that Lombardo wasn't.

Yeah, but wasn't Diabolus in Numetallicus mostly Jeff's work? Both the Slayer guitarists have written their fair share of awful, awful crap.

Why is it always the drummer that ends up getting the short end of the stick? We saw it with Bill Ward and Sabbath, now we're seeing it with Dave Lombardo and Slayer.

Also, yes, Diabolus was written almost entirely by Jeff, with one song being written by Kerry. Tom and Paul had no musical contributions to the album.

Slayer is clearly a business that happens to be a band. I don't go to shows to see business management on stage. Enjoy your tours, Slayer; I won't be there.

Slayer is absolutely getting slayed on their Facebook page.

This would not be an unreasonable educated guess.

Two cases and it's always the drummer, huh? Probably the same reason why some bands have such a revolving door for drummers and why drummers are often in so many bands: They're just there to do the drums and that's pretty much it. They don't contribute songwriting or lyrics and often they're fairly easy to replace with someone competent. In this and Bill Ward's case it's the flakiness and unreliability as well, I imagine. Lombardo might seem like the nice guy and King the money-hungry asshole in this case, but, you know, you only contribute drums to the band and flake out a few times and leave the band for ten years when times seem to be tough, it's no wonder you don't get an equal share when you return and get the axe when you get difficult. I imagine Araya and Hanneman are in the management of the band as well as King though maybe not with as large a share - especially with Araya - so they get a share as well.

As for musical contributions, it's all Hanneman and King in Slayer. Araya has never done anything and neither have the drummers. Well, Araya has some lyric credits, but that's about it.

Dave's story sounds strange. How did he not realise that he'd not been paid for x amount of time? Sounds like a cop out for something deeper to me. Everyone knows Kerry's a dick, its easy to make him out to be the bad guy. I think something else is going on.

The thing is, one of the main reason bands like Slayer don't produce anything worth a shit anymore is because the business aspect starts overshadowing artistic concerns.

Kerry King has tightened his grip on this band for a long time now and no. It's not understandable. It's just fucking lame and shitty, like the music he is throwing at fans these days.

...There goes their position as least-fucked band of the Big Four, all within the space of a couple of months.

In all honesty, I know a lot less about Slayer than the average metal fan, having never listened to them much, but they seemed extremely stable, and I admired that.

This. I can't bring myself to give a shit about this, as much as I'd like to. As far as I'm concerned, this band broke up after Divine Intervention.

That would be cool. And Mike could quit doing thousands of side projects. Just keep it down to Faith No More, Fantômas and the new Mondo Cane record. The New Tomahawk was half-good, just like their last one.

I feel bad for Dave, but as far as my ears are concerned, I'll take Paul Bostaph over him any day. His drumming is a huge reason I keep Divine Intervention and Shovel Headed Kill Machine by Exodus in heavy rotation.

For me, DI was the greatest album Slayer ever released. Dave's fast and energetic and all but Bostaph's drumming was always more interesting to me.

Oh come on, Mike! Speed and energy aren't the only things Dave has going for him. Hell, Seasons in the Abyss' titletrack is pretty much a six and a half minute long drum fill, and that's to name just one example.

 I never said he was bad or just fast or anything. But since you mentioned it, I will admit SitA is my personal favorite Lombardo song. That fill from 0:57 - 1:14 makes me jiz- I mean - happy... every time :)

But I just prefer Bostaph is all. You can't tell me that Mind Control or Killing Fields doesn't make you head bang involuntarily from the sheer thrashing awesomeness.
