Despite the hackneyed quality of the drawing, I really like the Realmbuilder cover. More albums should have that kind of themes in their cover arts, rather than boring stuff like that Altar of Plagues cover, or typical photoshop nonsense à la modern Gothenburg bands. Besides Character, all more recent Dark Tranquillity deserve a place in this thread sooner than the Realmbuilder cover.

That Altar of Plagues cover reminds me of that kind of "art" that doesn't really amount to anything, but is praised by pretentious artsy guys as being something more than what it actually is. Maybe I'm just not an artsy person, but when I look at that, I see an admittedly attractive women doing some kind of gymnastic pose. Nothing more. Nothing deep or meaningful. When I see Lulu's cover, I see an ugly mannequin upon a white background. Nothing more. When I see the cover of, say, the new Graveland album. Now that is what I consider art. That actually evokes a feeling when I look at it. There are things to study in it. When I look at the fantastic cover artwork to Vader's Welcome to the Morbid Reich, that evokes the same response. I can spend minutes looking at these wonderful covers, exploring them. That, to me, is what an art on an album cover is really like.

Maybe I just don't 'get it'. Meh.

But yoga is very much a part of Black Metal in how zen it is, per se. I also think the primitive black and white shot are very lo-fi which is ironic in that AoP are quite massive.

I'm sickened with Indonesian brutal death metal album covers.
Image
The main theme of the album itself is not brutality, but rather a want to commit suicide as a criticism of Indonesian people who often commit suicide. The cover is truly nonsense, showing gory artwork that has almost nothing to do with committing suicide.

I've always had a problem with the artworks by this Seth Spiro Anton guy from Septic Flesh. Funnily enough the ones hes does for SF have been OK, if not boner-inspiring, but the ones he has done for Nile, Belphegor, Old Man's Child, Moonspell, Nightrage, Paradise Lost, Rotting Christ... to me they all look repetitive, they usually look just like something he's done before at this point, and don't really give the impression he's evidently trying so hard to give. There's nothing iconic or engaging. I don't know how he gets the work. Anyone with me?

I can appreciate that he's working with some interesting concepts, often related to some mutation of the human form, but he just doesn't seem to pull it off without it looking like some DeviantArt splash pic by someone who just got a copy of Photoshop. I think what I hate is the lazy combining of the images... so like in those Nile, Belphegor and Old Man's Child arts, and a bunch more, it seems like he couldn't be fucked to properly meld the images together, so parts are really clear, and other parts are just blurred or blank.

Oh, but I do like the cover art for Vader's Impressions in Blood. I'm sure there are a couple of other decent ones I've forgotten too.

That Altar of Plagues artwork is unispired and lame, but if the only art that you get is the one with nice drawing and figurative representations then you surely "don't get" many other cool artworks that go for a non-figurative or at least not classic style.

I thought it a bit bland considering Girlschool had had a few hits by then . Black background would've been awesome though.

The gun looks like it was copy and pasted. Doesn't fit at all in there with how clean and shiny it is when the rest of the cover has grainier texture. Other than that though the cover is fine as it is just a typical gory death metal cover.

That one I can agree with. Incredibly boring artwork. The image within the doorframe should be the main event, not some stowed-away detail

For such an important comeback album, they sure didn't go overboard with the creativity.

When you have the album in your hands, this cover looks much more impressive. The whole booklet is done in a similar style, and the video for White Dwarf continues the same imagery.

I'm gonna have to disagree with that actually, I really like almost all of his work. The "At the Gates of Sethu" cover wasn't that great, but I think the rest of his covers and his artwork in general is pretty consistently good.

I'll have to wade through these 11 pages of comedy when I have more time.......

The Tsjuder one put me in tears, just because of the title "Demonic Possession" being represented by some kid in corpsepaint going "arrrr!!"

Here's some funny ones:

Jesus being tickled under the arms by Satan:

Thor's Hammer, lyrically and visually, has always struck me as a band for cretins.

A black metal band advertising a gay porn site......

Thor's Hammer are a terrible racist band, but I can see why they switched from the left hand cover to the right. The right one is well-framed and is quite punchy in terms of the message. The one on the left... well... I don't need to point out why that's awful!

That Iron Cross cover is cheesy as hell, but t's a bit like all those cliché black metal covers featuring some guy wearing corpse paint, grimacing. I don't dislike those because they fit within the genre. They're not great, but they make some sense. The worst covers for me are the badly photoshopped images or crappy drawings that look like they were knocked up in 10 minutes.

Although I actually *musically* enjoyed Fidelity Shall Triumph and Alone Against All, Capricornus has always struck me as one of the dumber NSBM "artists".

Probably due to English not being his first language, his song titles, album covers, lyrics, etc. always struck me as being done by a mentally disabled caveman who just adopted nazi ideologies.

Even his vocals sound somewhat retarded.

It's not featured on the Archives (borderline hard rock/metal), but Chris Catena has some ridiculous album covers. Actually, this cover made me buy the album (for 49ct):

This has to be one of the lamest covers I've ever laid eyes on. The European cover was way better I have no idea why they wouldn't just have it as the American cover art too.
