I'm not sure this qualifies as either ugliest/lamest or, in light of the other current thread, coolest, but back in the day, before I got my hands on Gorguts' Obscura, and when I'd only ever seen lo-res or thumbnail images of its artwork -- we're talking just within a couple years after it came out -- I'd wrongly supposed the figure on the cover to be a levitating yogic pigman. If you will:

Image

Either step back from your screen or let your eyes go a little out of focus, and imagine the dude's head as that of a pig with its chin slightly upturned in smug defiance. The nostrils and mouth of the man remain those of the pig, but his wisps of hair become little bowtie ears, and the shadows on his sunken cheeks become the malevolent, porcine eyes. His beard is the chin and throat area.

I had a very strange image of Gorguts before I'd ever heard their music. And to this day I still see the pigman.

Oh my god... now I can't unsee it.

Strangest thing, though, the cover actually improves, if you imagine the head as a pig... a pissed off pig, that's giving someone the finger.

Guess I could've mentioned that the pigman in question is adorned with Abbath-styled batwing corpsepaint.

I see it now. The reason I thought it was a levitating pig-man, was because since I have never owned the album, I never got the chance to look at the cover close-up, and always just assumed that that's what it was.

I had the same problem with the album "Jouhou" by the band Discordance Axis. To someone who owns that album, it might be perfectly clear that the picture on the cover is...whatever the fuck it actually is. But to me, from the small, grainy image I have seen, it looks like an alien spaceship with chinese takeout flying off a brain. This is one of the many reasons I no longer download :).

Oh my God... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I can't stop laughing at this. I nominate this to be the new actual front cover for this album.

Ah... Anyway, I always saw the pigman too, but now that I've been shown what it actually is up close, it's totally fucking with me. My eyes now automatically see the bearded head, and I have a really hard time making myself see the pigman again. I admit, I'm a little sad. Thankfully now I have the new and improved version to look at. Thank you.

Thanks man! Everything makes sense now. And I can even still see the pigman, which is a better cover than the ghost of Gandalf for me anyway.

I always saw a pig-man too. The tufts of hair on the old man were ears to me. I thought the black under the man's eyes were where the pig's eyes were supposed to be.

Am i the only one who thought the cat in the corner was a bird too for ages?

I never saw the pigman and still don't even when trying, but now it's finally dawned on me that those are legs underneath him. FOr some reason I always viewed it as being a bunch of arms crossing.

But anyways, this cover's always irked me a bit:

Just always looked so goddamn cheap and hastily thrown together.

Also taking time out to nominate any dsbm album that involves someone holding a gun in their mouth.

I don't know I just don't get it. I bought it when it came out. So I never had an issue like how most of you younger kids/adults were exposed to the album via thumbnails on the internet. *shruggs*

I agree with SLK here. I have a copy of the album and was never even aware of this 'pigman'-believing subculture present here. I seriously thought y'all were joking at first; it clearly looks like the old man it is to me.

Pretty sure the majority of people didn't figure this shit regarding Obscura yesterday, sheesh.
It's not hard for me to see either image, and it's certainly not hard for me to see how someone who hasn't seen it up close could make the mistake...

You guys just lack any imagination... That is your problem, yo. :(

Owning a copy of Obscura since the day it came out doesn't earn you any kvlt point, either. Pretty sure some people have owned that album multiple times... Still doesn't make it hard for me to see the pig. You just have to BE the pig to see it, man...

I wish I had a copy of Obscura :( but yeah I've never been able to see pig man even after you guys pointed it out, its just always looked like a creepy old yoga dude to me.

When I first saw that cover I instantly thought pigman. Didn't see the old man until years later (like 2010). Every time I see it I instinctively see pigman first.

it doesn't make me cult nor mak imagination. It just allows me to see it what it was to begin with. I'm really just thinking many of you need to get some glasses.

That cover is actually giving me really weird vibes, I dunno the title combined with the strange pole consisting of jawbones. It just feels 'off', but not necessarily in a bad/lazy way but rather creepy.

I have that blood Mortized... never thought it was a shitty cover, but I always thought it kinda looked like Lemmy

Don't you remember that He-Man and Zorak were fighting in LOTR?

Btw, I can see now the pig in the Obscura's cover.

I actually think this is a decent cover. A typical gore picture for a brutal death metal record (I assume that's what it is?) with no meaning whatsoever, but it's quite well drawn. There are so many much worse and lazy drawn pictures, this isn't one of them.

It's not well drawn. Perspective is all wrong, looks terrible. And that single tooth... arrrggghh...

I'll agree though, that... 85% (at least) of all other brutal death metal gore cover pics aren't much better. But I guess that's not what you meant...

Not metal, but I can't decide if this is the stupidest or best-fitting album cover for the music on the album:

Spoiler: show

On one hand, it's Klaus Schulze with a dorky 70's haircut and cross-eyed. On the other hand, it's Klaus Schulze looking like he's locked in Tron world, which really goes along with the music.

I rather like that one... it is as gay as it gets, but I can't imagine that album (which I love and don't wanna live without) not looking like that.

So, sweet, sweet gay-ass cover art... yep...

I had this on vinyl once upon a time. Not sure if I still do.

There are some black metal CDs that I think take the cake. Random corpse-paint guys wandering in the woods. Worse than Immortal's Battles in the North, too. If I can dig them up, I'll scan & post.
