I was thinking how good The Barghest o' Whitby after posting it in the thread about the favorites MDB albums (I know, is not an album and shit), and that took me to aother great great ep, Agalloch Faustian Echoes. Both are one long song, heavier and darker than any of those present bands releases, they have a lot of changes but nevger loos coherence and they end up with an epic feeling, leaving you wantiong more.
So, do you like this kind of “experiments” the bands do? what other ep are one long epic heavy, melodic, massive or whaterver?, because I can only recall those.
Note, not talking about full lenghs with one hour song like your every day deppressive bedroom BM, or the (great by the way) green carnation Light of day...

Long songs work much better as the conclusion to an album IMO, and even then 15 minutes is about as far as it should go. In metal, anyway. I know Moonsorrow did an EP with one song and a bunch of covers, but I don't like Moonsorrow.

Had to pop in to say Cultes Des Ghoules ~ Spectres over Transylvania. A 25 minute one song ep that is just fucking killer. Everything about this EP/Song is just amazing. I promise you if you usually don't like long songs but love black metal, this one will change your mind

Pest's Dauðafærð comes to mind. Very beautiful and epic.

Pig Destroyer-Natasha is so massive, my favorite EP (tied with The Axis of Perdition-Physical Illucinations...). Better than everyone of their full-lengths combined.

red_blood_inside, please tell me your sig is from Horacio Quiroga's "El Almohadón de Plumas". Such a great writer.

First thing that came to mind was Planet AIDS - Apokalyptic AIDS. Would describe the band as being similar to what Streetcleaner era Godflesh would sound like if they decided to play funeral doom.

If you're into droning, washed-out, hypnotic black metal, check out any of the EPs by Oaks of Bethel; they're all around the thirty-minute mark and damn good.

Obligatory Chaining the Katechon mention. If you have yet to listen to it, I highly suggest you do. Anything I say is worth nothing, you have to just listen.

My favorite one song EP of all time is X Japan's "Art of Life". I even like the 9-minute piano solo. In fact, I think it is the band's greatest achievement of their long and spectacular career.

Good call. I also love the whole track and its atmosphere throughout its duration. Maybe it's partly due to the nostalgic values and memories associated with the track, but still, it's great as ever and gets better with further listens even after many years. I think the piano solo is a grower for sure, too. Sounded a bit chaotic and long-winded at first anyway.

I like Moonsorrow and I can say the they long song of the EP was great, not as good as the long songs of the full album but still an excellent composition.

I wouldn't really call it an EP, and like I posted on an earlier thread I do not support nor condemn NSBM as I have no political stance whatsoever...
But Nitberg "Nagelreid" is a massive recording. There are so many goddamn killer and atmospheric riffs on that recording it just blows my mind..

Epos - Darkestrah. 30 minutes of epic perfection, great riffs, atmosphere, even lyrics fit this little bm gem. there are also some sympho and central-asian shamanistic folk elements incorporated in it. a real pleasure to listen to...
