Actually, it wasn't a direct answer to your question as it is, however I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Help. Can someone recommend some good stuff in the vein of SEVERE TORTURE.

I am already familiar with everything that's written in the similar artists section on MA.

Cheers!

Not super close to Severe Torture, but I think the band Disfigured should scratch that itch. Riffy, punchy brutal death metal with CC, Deicide & Sinister influences...

@RippingHeadache,

That's rather good stuff. Do recommend more if you think of anything else in the vein of Severe Torture,Prostitute Disfigurement, Cannibal Corpse etc.

I'm fond of the intentions of Tiamat's Sumerian Cry and Cemetery's An Evil Shade of Grey but to me those albums lack a bit in the riffing department. So, are there any albums that resemble the same spooky gothic horror atmosphere of those records, while at the same time riffing a bit harder?

That Cemetary album is one of my favourites, but I've never really heard anything that fully captures that feeling. I know what you mean about the spooky horror thing, for me it's a feel of dark forgotten places, like a dark hollow in a forest. For now I can only think of the 2019 "Supreme Degradation" demo from Ossuary which gave me a bit of a Cemetary feel in places:
https://youtu.be/-g4JJcGzMmQ

Maybe some of Spectral Voice's material as well?
https://youtu.be/0mJYOTn80Jw

I'll keep racking my brains.

Im not sure if this hits the nail on the head either, but the last Mystifier album is really good in a weird-spooky-gothic-horror sort of way. Old Mystifier is good too.

I know all those bands and I'm afraid they're not what I'm looking for.

EDIT: Stumbled upon Darkified and they're basically what I was looking for!

I've been disappointed with Death Metal releases this year, nothing has really stand out so far. My guess is I've been looking at the wrong stuff.

So, I'd like some recs in that regard.

Just so you guys have some guidelines: Suffocation, Dying Fetus, Cryptopsy are among my favorites. Last 2/3 years releases I've liked also include Tomb Mold, Ripped to Shreds, Depravity. But at this point I'm willing to give anything a try really.

Good DM from this year;

Chaos Catharsis: technical/brutal death
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4ISaeC2xk0

Coagulate: new old school-ish band
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yORla8AdncE

Deliquesce: super tight, NYDM styled, riffy-ass brutal death from Australia
https://deliquesceau.bandcamp.com/

Sarcosium/Saccular split: swampy, downtuned filth, two one-man bands, one is Wayne from Ghoulgotha and Encoffination, the other is Justin of Infestment, Father Befouled, both of them are in a fuckton of other bands too. Check out Justin's Infestment demos for some cool early Cannibal Corpse aping, as well.

Putrescine: Cool OSDM demo

Funeral Leech! bolt Thrower-inspired doom/death (mostly death) metal. Nothing too new, but the band plays with conviction.

Anyone know any good deathgrind style bands maybe similar to say 'Circle of Dead Children'? I like their many blastbeats and different vocal ranges.

I'm currently on a binge of nasty putrid primitive gore-themed death metal. Imagine a fetid pit inhabited by Autopsy, early Pungent Stench, early Cadaver, Maimed, Doomed (the Autopsy side-project), plus some more grindy acts like early Carcass, early Xysma, Ulcerous Phlegm and Corpse (Bulgarian). What other bands would inhabit this hole of horror? Nothing clean, technical or brutal, nor too overly grindy. (Edit: and no Carcass clones please.)

Preferably old-school, though modern bands are OK if they really fit the bill. Some recent demos I've enjoyed are Congenital Deformity, Coffin Mulch, Casket Slime.

Disastrous Murmur - Rhapsodies in Red (since you like Pungent Stench)
Dysentery - Brings Me No Tears (OG death/grind band from Germany NOT the slam band)
Accidental Suicide - Deceased
Gory Melanoma - Suffer Thy Genitalia
Disembowel - Echoes of Terror
Headrot - Among the Remains

Disembowel is the only modern act mentioned but its some damn good death metal in the vein of Autopsy.

Excellent, thank you for those. I knew Disastrous Murmur and Accidental Suicide, but the others are new to me. I shall investigate immediately!

Edit: I've just checked them out, those are some excellent recommendations! I particularly liked Headrot, but the others are great as well, in very different ways. Thanks again.

You and me both, but that band is pretty unique. A few of the old Willowtip acts might scratch the same itch.

Commit Suicide
Crowpath
Upheaval
Sadia Euphoria
Fate of Icarus
Creation is Crucifixion

Also Terminally Your Aborted Ghost, probably the closest I've come across to CODC weird ass grind

Very recently I realized how great of an album Close To a World Below is by Immolation.

Maybe someone can point to some lesser known albums which have that quality.

Im sure youre familiar with Ulcerate. Them.

Mitochondrion. Maybe.

I know Jacob Bannon from the hardcore band Converge is a big fan if that Immolation album. Its how I first heard of it. I can see how they assimilated the elements into their sound. Especially on When Forever (which also has a big Today Is the Day vibe too.)

Yes indeed. I see an Immolation influence in both Mitochondrion as well as Ulcerate.

Crimson Massacre - The Luster of Pandemonium

Hellish, unorthodox, technical.

Yes that Crimson Massacre stuff has some good drums. I have yet to give it a few good listens.

By the way, I can't help but share this:

I just discovered this:

This is all in the vein of Gorguts/Ulcerate/Immolation. Maybe someone can come up with other suggestions.

That Ingurge is great. They've been around the scene for years now but never got their due recognition.

Have you checked out the first Adversarial album? Some Immolation vibes in there too.

For Immolation flavored shit, check out Decapitated Christ, Drawn and Quartered, Phobocosm, Sectu, Altars (AUS), Throne of Nails, Embrional, and Heaving Earth. I'm sure there's a lot I'm leaving out, but those will all be a really good place to start. Immolation is a hard band to replicate, and as a result, not nearly as many people try to emulate them as, say, Incantation, Entombed, or Autopsy.

If you like IO, check out the Exlimitir full length from 2018. It's like a modernized tech-death "Nespithe", and I've heard them compared to IO a few times. Very cool, but beware the drum machine.

Those are some excellent suggestions. Really like Embrional and Altars. very good dense, sludgy vibes with a lot of gravity.

EDIT:-
Adversarial - All Idols Fall Before the Hammer

is pretty cool stuff too

This stuff is good too

I also heard Portal and many parts of it are eminently listenable.

Some of my favorite newer death metal bands as of late have been the ones that take old school death metal and push its boundaries.

Don't get me wrong, I definitely still enjoy the more straightforward OSDM worship, but my favorites are bands like Blood Incantation, Cryptic Shift, Horrendous, Voidceremony, Zealotry, Nucleus, the new Unaussprechlichen Kulten, etc. Bands who have a forward thinking, somewhat progressive approach to the murky old school sound that pushes the envelope.

Cosmic Void Ritual - Gateways Through Septic Flesh
Desolation Realm - S/T
Exlimitir - It Weighed itself in Silver
Garroted - Of Damnation and Abyssal Terrors
Diskord - Dystropics

There's Chapel of Disease's new album with its unique, hard rock swagger. Maybe not death metal enough for some but I dunno.

There's a fairly fitting list for what you seem to enjoy on Rate Your Music that I'll post below. I'm a picky asshole, so I can't personally vouch for everything on this list, but it seems relevant to your request so I'll just provide and let you choose for yourself. I would, however, highly recommend Ghoulgotha, Epitaphe, Pavor (not really new; albums in '94 and '03, but necessary), Undersave, Inanna, Plague Pit, Crimson Massacre (not new, but an incredibly unique and virtuosic album), Cosmic Atrophy, Anata, and Polyptych. Specific mention on the list goes to Molested from Norway, whose entire discography is both eldritch and brutal; Timeghoul, who you probably know, since they specifically inspired a handful of the bands you mentioned, but if you DON'T...you damn well need to. One of the coolest and most unique demo-only death metal bands of the 90s, probably of all time. THREE GUITARISTS!! And they fucking justified it!! Incredible. Anyway, I also highly recommend Traumasphere from that list, presented as Abyssal Suffering on RYM; not technically incorrect, as they changed their name to that later on and did another (less cool) demo, but the Voidcall demo was definitely under the Traumasphere name. It's a really riffy and technical demo with an odd vibe, honestly one of my favorite discoveries of 2020, and this has been a year of new music for me so that's quite an accolade.

https://rateyourmusic.com/list/Sepulcru ... eath-metal

Beyond that list, here are a few more releases that could be considered unique in style or forward-thinking:

Desolation Realm-Desolation Realm: probably the tightest, most accurate band to be directly influenced by Timeghoul. They also cite Immolation, Cryptopsy, and Infester as influences, and if that doesn't excite you, then just gtfo
Tryptamyne-Tryptamyne: really weird proggy DM with a shit ton of jazz influence. Hell, one of the songs just IS jazz. The DM songs themselves are interesting as hell if you like that kind of stuff, but they do sneak some grating clean vocals in there as well, though sparingly. Still worth a listen!
Gash-Crossing the Lugubrious: Demilich inluenced, still fairly unique stuff

Dunno if you're too much of a pussy for brutal death metal or not, but Defeated Sanity is bar-none the most forward thinking death metal band, brutal or non, so check that out if you haven't already. If you want an actual old school band that is more forward-thinking than most of what comes out almost 30 years later, check out the first two Atrocity albums. Awesome stuff.

That's a lot of names, a good chunk of which you've likely already heard, but I hope this has helped you find a couple new things to check out!

Recently I went through Antediluvian, Portal, Impetuous Ritual, Vassafor, Malthusian and other such bands. I like this kind of music a lot. I'm looking for that atypical style that bands like Ulcerate and Immolation are known for.
