God Is Myth has launched a collection of records based on Lovecraft's stories; some should be worth a listen, I guess:

http://www.god-is-myth.com/lovecraftseries.html

also, check Aarni and the split they contributed to: TRIBUTE TO H.P. LOVECRAFT/ YOGSOTHERY - Gate I : Chaosmogonic Rituals Of Fear

Morbid Angel has a Cthulhu-themed song, "Lords of All Fevers and Plague", on Altars of Madness, referring the Great Old One of Ninnghizhidda.

To the guy above me: Morbid Angel has more songs referring to the cthulhu mythos and they are influenced by Simon Necronomicon which makes a connection between Lovecraftian gods and the sumerian gods so it's a bit pointless to mention Morbid Angel in my opinion. Other songs include (some of the more obvious but oh well) "ANgel of Disease" and "The Ancient Ones".

As for my contribution to the topic: There is a swedish band called Puteraeon http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Puteraeon/126259 which plays old school swedish death metal with lyrics about Lovecraftian gods and so forth. I havent listened to them myself though. Then you have Tyrann from Norway a side project of Seidemann from 1349 and plays death/thrash. Personally I think they are decent, but you might like them. There is many more of course, but this is what I can think of at the moment.

Just to point it our. The reason I mentioned other MA songs is because I wanted to show proof for my claim about MA's lyrical content.

Just in case it hasn't been mentioned yet, I'd like to point to Dawn of Relic's "Lovecraftian Dark" album, quite decent melodic black-/death metal, with some catchy riffs.

Full album can be streamed here:

The french Doom/Death Metal band Catacomb released 2 very good demos with Lovecraftian themes: The Lurker at the Threshold and In the Maze of Kadath.

This isn't a metal band, but it's pretty fucking dark (ambient electronica, I suppose would be the best way to describe it). Aklo: http://aklo-lovecraftian.bandcamp.com/indexpage
This is the soundtrack I use while playing Arkham Horror (a big-ass tabletop game based on the Cthulhu Mythos.

Though lyrics haven't been listed for any of their songs, you might want to check out the band Brown Jenkins and the follow-up The Ash Eaters.

Aarni are pretty influenced by Lovecraft, referencing Cthulhu numerous times.

Manilla Road have a couple of Lovecraft-influenced songs - "Return of the Old Ones" from Out of the Abyss is an excellent one, and "Sea Witch" from Atlantis Rising is also pretty cool. Sacred Oath have the song "Shadow Out of Time" which is pretty sweet. Ironsword also have a lot of Lovecraft influences, although I'm not too keen on their material. Maybe check out the song with Mark Shelton on vox, I think it has a really generic name like "Call of Cthulhu" or something.

Check out Cradle Of Filth's song "Cthulhu Dawn" from their "Midian" album.

Septic Flesh is definitely one of the first bands that come to mind, I was just reading the convivial hermit a couple of days ago and came across a Septic Flesh interview where they praise lovecraft greatly.

Sotiris;

"I admire him because of his ability to bring dark ancient dreams into reality, his passion for occultism and chaotic alien gods and his restless mind in general. I would suggest for someone who wants to get a good taste of his fantasy realm to read books such as At The Mountains of Madness, The case of Charles Dexter Ward, The Shadow over Innsmouth and The Silver Key."

Edit: Was just listening to MR all day, and have got to agree with the poster a couple above me, Manilla Road has some excellent Lovecraft themed songs. Listen to Atlantis Rising first, although there are other songs that are based on Lovecraft stories on other albums. MR is so damn awsome, I mean every song's lyrics are really exhilarating whatever they choose to sing about.

Also, I would recommend a book called "The Strange Sound of Cthulhu: Music Inspired by the Writings of H. P. Lovecraft" by Gary Hill, it looks like exactly what you are looking for. Actually thinking about picking it up myself now that i started doing some research, it certainly looks like its mostly on Metal and the reviews are quite good. Amazon.

Hi!
First time posting so forgive any mistake.
Reading through the posts (a glimpse sometimes), I noticed Darkified was missing.

Some songs/albums are about H.P. Lovecraft Mythos, Megascavenger.

I've been hunting for some Payne's Gray for YEARS...

I can't see that anyone have posted Chthe'ilist yet. Perhaps the most hard to remember band name out there? :)

To spell? Definitely up there.

As for Lovecraftian metal, I don't see any mention of Tru'nembra yet, their debut was released last year.

If you're not already familiar with Revocation, their album The Outer Ones is mostly based on HP Lovecraft or similar cosmic horror.
