Looking for good Extreme Power Metal bands and albums.

This will be bands typically labeled as "Melodic Death Metal," but that musically are more like a heavier evolved form of Power Metal, in a similar way to how Power Metal is a faster (and often cheesier) evolved form of old school traditional Heavy Metal.

Think bands like Æther Realm, Wintersun, Gladenfold and Wizardthrone.

Kalmah is a good example. It's my go-to for this type of sound.

There's also a nice gem called Lothlorien, from sweden. The power metal influence is there, even if subtle at times.

This is probably too obvious but you're describing Bal Sagoth to a T. Link.

i'm not sure if they're quite what you're looking for, since this isn't really my kind of stuff, but insomnium and omnium gatherium seem to be hugely popular around here

Nah, Insomnium and Omnium Gatherum represent the Finnish more melancholic and proggy style, almost doomy at times, nearly the opposite of what the OP is looking for, which is the faster, often neoclassical-influenced variation. Think Children of Bodom.

We talked about this idea some last year, most don't like the naming of it, but there are many bands scattered about this thread.

Been meaning to check out Kalmah for a while. Any particular songs or albums to recommend? For either of these? Never heard of Lothlorien.

Pretty much, yeah. I already know them, but thanks anyway. Preesh.

Lots of dissenters there, I see. I get where they're coming from, but to me it just makes too much sense.
If it instrumentally sounds like a punchier version of Power Metal, why not refer to it in terms befitting that?
I'll comb through the thread in more detail, see what's on offer there. Thanks.

Regarding Kalmah, depends on your preferences. The first three albums are more akin to Children of Bodom with less neoclassical influences, down to the shrieked vocals. From the fourth album onwards, they start to take more influences from classic melodic death metal, even the vocals become low growls for the most part. Although there is still a lot of variety within and between albums, my favourite is The Black Waltz if you want to start there. Otherwise start at the first album and listen to how their sound evolves, it's a rewarding experience.

Lothlorien only released one album, but I can recomend the opener "I Wear Mankind". The chorus stays in my head for days everytime I listen to this song.

Listen to Paladin. Lots of higher octane Children of Bodom vibes, but with zero keys and largely clean vocals (though there's still some harsh vox in a couple of songs).

They've also toured with Aether Realm when both of them were opening for Unleash the Archers.

I remember one power/death (or maybe it was even "blackened power" !?) band being highly regarded in the Heavy/Power/Speed thread cca 10 years ago, I remember they had an album from the early 2000s (cca '00-'01 or so) and some fantasy type cover with a lot of brown or purple...Unfortunately, the name escapes me now...And the band was not COB, Kalmah or Norther...

I am not the biggest fan of this style but I do like the band Primalfrost from Canada. They have been around for 10 years and released two albums and an EP. I guess their first album got some attention because it has 5 reviews but it seems like the newer one went largely unnoticed around here.

I also like Skymning from Sweden. They changed to a more industrial style after their first album Stormchoirs but that one is probably in the vein of what you are looking for

lol I believe there's a misunderstanding. Tonatiuth is referring to the deathcore band, not anything related to your music.

Sorry to post on an old dead thread. Do you know Brimstone (Swe)? Their album "Carving a Crimson Career" is outstanding and might interest you.

Perhaps Iotunn from Denmark might tickle your fancy.
Their first EP is a kind of proggy power metal with a bit of melodeath in the riffing. Their full length is less power metal (primarily due to a change in vocalist) though.

Given to Explore, from their 2016 debut EP

The Tower of Cosmic Nihility, from their 2021 album
