Hey everyone,

Going through a bit of a rough patch in life lately. Can you give me your recommendations for the most depressing, despair laden music (within the metal genre) you've come across?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, you haven't mentioned the exact genres of metal that you're interested in, so I'll just post whatever songs come to my mind.

You might want to check out my thread about mournful doom metal. The ones I listed in OP should fit your description, and the ones posted by other users are good too (although I haven't checked them all out yet).
Other doom metal songs that come to my mind:
Slumber - Distress
Katatonia - Rainroom
Saturnus - All Alone

You should also check out the dsbm genre. Some songs that come to mind:
Xasthur - Walker Of Dissonant Worlds
Thy Light - In My Last Mourning
Wigrid - Schreie der Verzweiflung (this one is very underrated, the lyrics and main riff are pure desolation).

Let me know if you liked any of these, I listen to a lot of depressing stuff.

Some relevant songs from the other genres also come to mind.

A couple of tunes from the realm of grief-laden gothic metal:
Sentenced - Brief is the Light
Darkseed - Counting Moments

Melodic death metal:
Insomnium - Daughter Of The Moon (these guys are the best for sorrowful melodeath)
Dawn Of Solace - I Was Never There
Wintersun - Sadness and Hate (say whatever you want about this guy, his sad melodeath music is pretty unique).

If you're not looking slow stuff, Thantifaxath's Sacred White Noise is a much more manic and destructive downward spiral into complete despair. It especially becomes potent on the second half of the album. https://darkdescentrecords.bandcamp.com ... hite-noise

Xasthur has been mentioned already, definitely check out that. IColdWorld's album Melancholie2 is also great.

If you'll permit me to recommend something that isn't metal, there's an ambient album called "Seraphim" I often revisit when I'm down. The whole thing album is like a comfortable sonic blanket you can wrap yourself up in, but I find "Seraph I", "Seraph II", and "Seraph IV" particularly soothing.

It seems to me funeral doom is the only real trustworthy depressing music purveyor; it's the genre's core business.

I'd suggest something else, less obvious: a dark rock band named The Wounded; similar to Katatonia, but more emotive imo. The lyrics bring you down. A band very precious to me:

within the Funeral doom realm, go for the rawest, bleakest stuff, like Monumenta Sepulcrorum, Waverly Hills, Akra, Abysmal Dimensions...

Blut Aus Nord - The Work Which Transforms God has been helping me through some similar feelings lately.

The first few releases (excluding the '92 demo/7"EP) by Skepticism will surely satisfy you.
