So I have this new co-worker who happens to be a metalhead, an overall great dude and a mean guitar player.
He listens almost exclusively to death metal and some prog, with Immolation, Death, Gorguts, Cryptopsy and Nile being some of his favourite bands. He has a strong distaste for black metal, a genre that, according to him, is music made by and for incels, nazis and people who can't play instruments very well.
I'm trying to show him there's a bit more to black metal than that, and he asked me to recommend him some bands. I was thinking of stuff like 1349 and Marduk for the speed and agression, Emperor and Dissection for the guitar work, as well as some Enslaved for some more proggy/trippy shit. Maybe I'll throw in some Deathspell Omega as well...

What bands would you show to someone who's into death metal but can't connect with black metal?

Root and Rotting Christ could work, as they got both proggy (Root way more) and folky (referring to Nile) bits.

Melechesh sounds like something he would like, especially because he's into Nile.

If he likes Gorguts and Immolation maybe try stuff like Deathspell Omega, Misthyrming, Aosoth, Svartidaudi, Zhrine. Also that new Verberis album.

Marduk's Wormwood could be a good one for the intensity. Blut Aus Nord's Memoria Vetusuta II for the musicianship.
