Conversation in IRC just reminded me of this idea. Is anyone aware of any metal bands that you can honestly say sound like they were influenced by Slint (Spiderland in particular)? And please, if you're not really familiar with the band, please don't look 'em up and see that sometimes people tag them as post-rock and start listing a bunch of post-black metal bands that are way off the mark. I'm talked angular, nocturnal, uncomfortable stuff.

slint doesnt really trigger any associations with any metal band to me personally.
however there is some old emo/post-hardcore and screamo that does. Not sure if you are interested in that though.

Sure, but I might already know it. I'm mainly after metal though.

I'll be interested too!
Spiderland it's one of my favorite albums ever, but right now i've only found discs that use similar surreal chord progressions (like Opeth's strangest clean riffs and Ved Buens Ende) but they are wildly different in terms of songwriting

I accept the challenge

The Body(early stuff)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdzJRfuHo_U
The Body are not even really Metal anymore, but their first few albums, especially this one, have a certain creepy post-rock vibe. Sludge metal, very artsy.

Rune- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OufT5dBNFc
Strange band. Some sort of mix of Death Metal, Sludge and Metalcore. Has the same atmosphere, but are not really as angular.

Ehnahre- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1TBTzDz6dE
I have no idea what this band is doing. They started as something like a Death Doom band and have gone full fucked. But this might be close to the same vibe.

Flourishing- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GGLeTP1_HQ
Post Rock meets Death Metal. Not really all that similar, but there are not a lot of options...

Buried at Sea- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAlWW-LEB_k
Their <i>Ghost EP</i> has some Slint like vibes and movements to it.

I will work on this more later... none of these feel perfect. But it might start you somewhere.

Thought Industry might be something for you. Check out the album 'Mods Carve...' for instance.

Or old Seigmen:

Alright, giving some of these a listen.

The Body - I wasn't really feeling it all that much in the song you linked, but this track "Even the Saints Knew of Their Hour of Failure and Loss" is kinda more on the money. I definitely feel some Slint vibes in these guitars and drums, though the vocals are of course way off and I'm not really sure if they're my thing. Definitely warrants further investigation though. "Sludge" is probably not a totally accurate label for this stuff either; there's definitely some black metal and general weirdness in there.

Rune - Not really feeling this one. There are some vaguely Slint-ish ugly chords and staccato strum patterns but mostly that seems like coincidence more than anything else.

Enahre - Haha, yeah this IS weird. Basically seems more akin to Harvey Milk with brief snippets of riffs that remind me of KYPCK. Not really very Slintish I don't think.

Flourishing - Already familiar with this band and like 'em sometimes. While I won't deny their math rock cred I don't think Slint are their particular breed. More Don Cab or something maybe. This is their Slintiest song though, definitely. Those harmonics remind me of stuff from the EP version of "Rhoda."

Buried at Sea - Ok...hmm. This one's harder to evaluate because it kind of sounds like they might take influence from an imaginary version of Slint that didn't break up and had continued evolving and getting weirder through the 90's. This is really, really cool though, not at all what I expected given the "sludge/drone/doom metal" genre tag.

Thought Industry - Yeah, no. I agree with failsafeman's assessment in his review: this is like a more metal Primus, or maybe some kind of Mike Patton project. Not Slint-like at all I don't think.

Seigmen - No, way, way off.

Here's a sample maybe for those who might have suggestions but aren't actually familiar with Slint:

Basically I'm looking for that unease, that malevolence, the rage and vulnerability. The way the guitars are both repetitious and hypnotic yet have this essential sort of discomfort to them.

It is really hard to find bands like you mentioned.

You should try:

Sólstafir - Ótta

Beyond Dawn - Love's (Only) True Defender

Callisto - The Fugitive

Isis - Will Disolve

Jambinai - Time of Extinction
Korean heavy psychedelic version of post-rock(doesn`t have that much of similiarities with Slint, but guitars are somewhat similiar to Slint). Killer band.

solstafir are much much more about fields of the nephilim than any element of slint, cant really find myself in the other recs either.
Jambinai are really good however, saw them live last month. looking forward to the new album
