Dissection was one of the first black metal bands I was able to get into, due to their melody and clean production on Storm of the Light's Bane. I've always liked melodic metal. I was always into traditional metal since I was about 5 years old. My father was into metal and I grew up with the likes of Judas Priest, UFO, Metallica, Iron Maiden, etc. So, I was very into traditional metal for a while and couldn't really get into death/black metal until later on in life. One of the first bands that I got into was Hypocrisy, and then albums like Dark Tranquility's Damage Doneand Intestine Baalism Banquet in the Darkness came into my life and I started to like the more extreme styles of metal with melody. Then, of course, Storm of the Light's Bane came into my life and I LOVED it. It has a sort of special meaning for me, as it was one of the first albums that really got me to "understand" harsher music.

So, seeing as I have a taste for harsh yet melodic metal, can anyone recommend me some albums that are similar to Storm of the Light's Bane? I have been recommended Windir, and I have listened to 1184, but I could not get into it. Maybe I didn't listen to the right album? I've listened to The Somberlain by Dissection and I like it, but it's not as good as SOTLB in my opinion. I really like the production on SOTLB.

Sacramentum - Far Away from the Sun
Blaze of Perdition - Necrosophist
Dark Ages - Their guitarist has some history with Jon, auditioning/ jamming & stuff. They've only have a couple of demos & an EP so far.
Perhaps some Thulcandra & Watain if that's not too obvious.

not sure i'd call these all that similar, but some of the more or less melodically inclined bm i like, off the top of my head (most of these might be way too obvious):

old man's child - pagan prosperity... one of the first black metal albums i really got into - likely largely because of the heavy... melodicity? melodicality? (what's the actual word for that?)
rotting christ - first four albums are my favourites - i think triarchy... would be closest to what you're looking for - late era is more chanty
naglfar - vittra
thou art lord - the regal pulse of lucifer
satyricon - nemesis divina

The obvious recommendation is Unanimated the biggest influence on Dissection. They even stole a riff or 2 from them.
The wider swedish melodic black/death scene fits into this as well with stuff ranging from Lunar Strain by In Flames to Sacramentum.

The Sacramentum album is EXACTLY what I was looking for! It sounds great, I previewed it on Youtube, can't wait to really give it a listen! Still have to check out the other stuff.

Thanks everyone for the recs!

If you haven't listened to them yet I think Vinterland's Welcome My Last Chapter and Hyperion's Seraphical Euphony might be worth a try.

Thulcandra is toal Dissection worship. Their albums don't vary greatly, but "Under a Frozen Sun" is probably my favorite by a hair.

Everdying might be one to look into. While it's not pure Dissection worship, it crosses a lot of the same T's and dots the same I's.

Funny, my story is almost identical to yours. For years and years i could only listen to traditional heavy metal.
Although from there it was bands like Be'lakor and Amon Amarth that kinda introduced me to harsher vocals.
I never quite gotten in to Black Metal because of the bad production, Dissection was the first black metal band i could listen to aswell but i still prefered Reinkaos.

I guess you've heard Ensiferum, Eluveite, Wintersun etc?

Bands a lil' closer to the genre you're looking for would be Aether Realm and Demonaz

Hope you'll like it :))

Try Mork Gryning.

Infinity reminds me of them as well.

I still haven't heard Tarot yet but idk if Aether Realm is really gonna do it as far as Dissection vibes go... BUT, Jake did play bass for a cool meloblack band called Oubliette. They even covered Thorns of Crimson Death!

Kvist, they only did one album I believe, slightly less polished production wise, but very much in the same style.

Antestor - The Forsaken

Supposedly they're a "Christian" band but I really don't see anything christian related in their lyrics to be honest

This album in particular features Hellhammer on the drums (Arcturus, Mayhem, Ex-Dimmu Borgir, Ex-Shining)

Either way, it's an amazing album and something I think any fan of Dissection would enjoy

Definitely this group called Necrophobic and which exists since 1993 is one of the big forgotten on this list. Often much less melodic than Dissection, sometimes reminiscent of Dark Funeral this group deserves a little detour. Especially for the 1997 Darkside album -
Cheers!

Other group that worship dissection we have:
Bane - The acausal fire -
Stortregn - An evocation of light -
Death Tyrants - Opus De Tyranis -
Cardinal Sin - Spiteful Intents (Full EP) -

And to return to the groups already named on this page:
Big # 1: THULCANDRA - Fallen Angel's Dominion -

Other essentials:
Mörk Gryning - Maelstrom Chaos -
Sacramentum - Far away from the sun -
Unanimated - In The Light Of Darkness -
NAGLFAR - Diabolical -
Watain - Opus Diaboli -
Blaze of perdition - Reincarnations -

Heil , Heil, Jon Nödtveidt! All salutations to thee, Into chaos set us free!

A blatant ripoff, to be fair. Even the artwork. I can't even listen to it.

while certainly more obscure than thulcandra, the most blatant dissection ripoff, however, is unhallowed's s/t MCD. it actually does out-dissection thulcandra, a look at the MA entry should say enough:

Fully agree with the previous Vinterland and Watain recommendations.
Check out:

I've been jamming UADAs album Cult of a Dying Sun recently and there are a lot of moments where the guitar is very reminiscent of earlier Dissection. The vocals are much more aggresive/varied, but it has that same sort of atmosphere to a certain extent, for me at least.

Have you tried Empreror's first two (especially "Anthems to the welkin at dusk"), or Cradle Of Filth's "Dusk and her embrace"/"Cruelty and the beast"?
Swordmaster "Wraths of time" EP rules, some members played with Dissection after "Storm of the light's bane", incl. Jon's brother on guitar. Immortal "At the heart of winter" is another great album in a style comparable to "Storm...".

Also I second Sacramentum "Far away from the sun" (check out "Finis malorum" EP too), Vinterland "Welcome my last chapter", Dawn "Slaughtersun" (also great "Sorgh på svarte vingar fløgh" EP) and Satyricon "Nemesis divina" recommendations.
