I love me some Doom, but appreciate some variety in my monolith music. Any recommendations for Heavy, Trad, Death, or Prog Metal that's slower? Preferably Death or Heavy.

The Ark is a mid-tempo prog metal band that's really good:

Morgana Lefay have produced some nice dark Power Metal too, Grand Materia for instance is a great mid-tempo album...

Thin Lizzy/ Thunder and Lightning is full of slow songs.

This would be my rec of the day...

Mid-slow tempo proggy metal. Doesn't sound like doom to me, although the band members seem to consider themselves a doom band.

Zero Hour (US): Contemplative, mid-paced progressive metal with killer technical grooves.

Psychic Possesor (Bra): Death/Black/Thrash metal ala Sarcofago that's mostly mid-paced save for one or two tracks.

Loudblast (Fra): Only going to suggest Sublime Dementia as its the only album of theirs that I've heard. Basically a slower, more languid take on progressive-era Death.

Tiamat (Swe): Their Wildhoney album is a very cool psychedelic mix of progessive metal, death metal and doom.

Check out also Sinister Realm; it's some very good Heavy Metal verging on Epic Doom, but not quite there, it doesn't convey the same vibe of "melancholic pride".

In the trad vein, Venomous Maximus is an interesting band with a vintage sound. Female-fronted Castle is good too as is Vanishing Kids.

Rainbow's Rising and Iron Maiden's Seventh Son of a Seventh Son would be other classic good picks.

Ark, not The Ark. The Ark was a very good Swedish pop band.

Yes, you're right, cheers for the correction. ;) Two excellent albums they've put out, I think.
