I've tried to get into black metal before, but i think i got in at a really extreme angle, maybe you guys could help me get something more surface level? The closest thing i like is blackened death metal, but i'd like to either straight black metal or war metal. thanks fellas

So, what you're looking for is non-extreme, accessible war metal? I know it's still April, but...

Could you provide us some idea what you like? Any specific bands/albums that resonate with you in particular?

You could try Covenant - Nexus Polaris.

i think immortal's at the heart of winter is quite accessible in a trad heavy metal way, while also being an amazing bm album

maybe try aura noir's last album if you like a rough thrashy carnivoresque sound

since you like some blackened death, maybe try some bands that have done both (most famous contemporary example probably being behemoth), starting with their more death metal albums (demigod in behemoth's case) and listening to the more black metal ones if you like the band in the first place

Come on, when it comes to war metal and accessible, those guys are way over there compared to the Revenges and Conquerors of the world.
