Yo, let's get a thread going with some solid Post recommendations.

Who are your favorite bands? Who are some bands you recommend?

Unfortunately it seems like post music isn't very much enjoyed over here with exception of Cult of Luna and some post black, and it's understandable, I remember having extreme trouble to get into, even more than bm. Also the fact that many post metal bands are prone to experiment with stuff that isn't metal, it end up that they're not even qualified as metal enough for this site's standards.

But anyway, Isis' Oceanic was probably the first of its genre that really got into me, and still remains one of my fav albums... the already mentioned CoL it's like Opeth to me, I should love it but I simply can't... Downfall of Gaia, Planks, Mouth of the Architect, Tempel, Agrimonia, Morne, Russian Circles, ITTCT, hubris... there are so many great post bands these days...

Right now I'm mostly looking forward post rock that goes more into the metal side, not many bands goes for it I guess, or maybe I'm just not looking deep enough...

Neurosis, Cult of Luna and Isis have recorded some of the best metal albums ever. I also enjoy Amenra, Old Man Gloom, Rosetta, Year of no Light, Celeste, Rorcal...

The last Sumac album is probably the best post metal in a while. Cult of Luna new album from this year is also great (although I prefer Vertikal).

There's been some good stuff released this year. The new Mono.

We Lost The Sea has a pretty solid new one

Harborlights is pretty good mix of chill buildups.

And of course the new Russian Circles

I'm also surprised We Lost the Sea isn't on here. Their early stuff is really no different from Isis or The Ocean:

Any post rock/metal you guys can recc? Something in the lines of Watered, Kokomo and Terraformer(they made some great splits btw), anything that doesn't go extremely into an way or another.

A Swarm of the Sun is a really cool band I discovered last year. Like the name might suggest, there are some Neurosis vibes, but the music isn't claustrophobic and suffocating like Neurosis, but pretty expansive and melancholic. The newest album The Woods is an incredibly good doomy post-rock piece. Atmosphere-wise, it has the feel of a post-metal album, but it doesn't get heavily distorted or riffy at any point. There are some clean vocals, but it's mainly instrumental.

Harborlights sounds pretty cool, thanks for the recommendation!

Hello.
I've recently discovered a Japanese math-rock / post-rock band toe and I quite like their mix of melodic non-heavy guitars and loud fast/mid-tempo drums.
Are there any post-rock bands/albums with a similar guitar + drum style but with more noticeable/catchy basslines? :)
Something similar to these tracks:

I once saw someone describe Exivious' album Liminal as post-rock (or atleast post-rock-inspired), which is enough of an excuse for me to mention this absolutely phenomenal band. Hope no one is bothered by the fact that I've praised this band to death in multiple posts, listen to this album a couple of times and you will be forever grateful.

Bandcamp link for your ease: https://exivious.bandcamp.com/album/liminal

Dianogah springs immediately to mind:

Maybe Unhome too, very intricate drumming:

balbulus, thanks a lot for the recommendations. Both bands are exactly what I'm looking for. I like the sound of all the drums and guitars. All the drum rhythms and basslines are very interesting, and the guitars are good, too. Surprisingly, there are even some vocals (which is a plus).
Dianogah are especially good because they have that 'uplifting/peaceful' mood similar to toe's music.

Glad you liked them. That Dianogah album is one of my all-time Top 10. I saw them play in London in about 2000, and it remains one of the best gigs I've ever been to. Usually when you see a band live they sound nothing like they do on record, but this was absolute perfection.

Thanks for sharing your impressions about their live performance. Now I respect this band even more.
They are definitely a very interesting band in terms of music and mood, and I just can't remember any other rock or metal band with such prominent and catchy basslines.

Post metal always felt like something I should like but never managed to fall for it, perhaps you guys can help my find something to make it click?

Two albums on the genre I really love are Agalloch's AATG and Falls of Rauros' Patterns in Mithology. Below are links to a song for each I'm particularly fond of
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBoUQyIuiNQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sut_3ZqXlaA

But if you'll allow me, I've got some nitpicking to do. On Agalloch's case I think that the only thing stopping that album from being an all-time great is the awful vocals and mediocre drumming. FoR's percussion on the contrary is fantastic, but it still falls short on the vocal delivery (though it doesn't offend as much). My main gripe in both cases is that they do that kind of falsetto-y rasp or scream which feels sort of powerless, and to top it, use a whine-y nasal sound when singing clean which I find particularly grating.

So please, if you've got some albums that share musical characteristics with those while approaching the vocal performance from another perspective, throw them my way. Thanks!

I wouldn't call any of those albums post metal. Agalloch have some post rock influence but that's it. I think instead you should be listening to black metal bands like Wolves in the Throne Room, Fauna, L'Acephale, Alda, etc.

Should we post post-black (post post???) recommendations here? Cause I feel it would get drowned in the Black Metal thread, since it's a bit more niche.

And Trna (instrumental):

The Great Old Ones and Numenorean are two bands I am absolutely in love with. Granted the former is a group that writes nothing but H.P. Lovecraft concept albums, so I'm a gigantic slut for that sort of thing.

That Adore album by Numenorean is really great (cool album cover too) but damn, they were really... inspired by Raidho from Enslaved for the title track.

Esben and the Witch's Nowhere is some great borderline post-rock/metal with some goth/ethereal vibes.

Mi favourite post rock band is Caspian, check this absolutely incredible performance:

They can get pretty energetic but they can make great atmospheric and melodic stuff as well.

Good stuff:

Help me with melacholic post-metal, that wander through Katatonia and doom realm, instrumental is better, can be post-bm, without too much shoegaze on it. Thx.

Oceanwake from Finland is basically death/doom/post-metal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8E07v1mRAac

They're a great live band; the post-rocky part with clean vocals ("solar flare from beneath...") was almost ecstatic live.

Maybe check out the Russian band The Morningside. First two albums are doomy post-metal. The third one is more post-bm; Katatonia is a reference they wear on their sleeve.

a more general rec would be to browse through the SLOWBURN catalogue: bands like Osoka, Fading Waves and others might do the trick.

I used to be a huge fan of instrumental post rock and eventually moved away from it.

Strangely, Ive been coming back to sample some of my favorites and those that still remain my favorites are:

Do Make Say Think
Tarentel
Caspian

I also still really like Mogwai and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. And have been listening to a lot of Isis again and Panopticon really sticks out as a great album. I didn't like it much when it first came out.

Always MUCH preferred Post-Rock as a whole to metal. Check out Toundra, GYBE (obvious), maybeshewill, God is an Astronaut, Hammock, Sigur Ros

I listened to a lot of post-rock during what I guess was a silver age for it, and the genre reached oversaturation, from 2007 to about 2010. I burned out on the genre, but now ten years later, I'm probably listening to more post-rock than ever before (turns out it's great when writing code). But I never liked God is an Astronaut, and I still don't. I don't get what's amazing about their naive, simplistic songwriting, which lacks the both the elegance and cleverness of certain bands, and the dramatic power of others.

Their peak was All is Violent, All is Bright, very sad album. For me, post-rock is about feelings. If the only thing I feel is boredom, then complex songwriting is useless. I don't know how complex are Godspeed You! Black Emperor, I'm simply deaf to their music. It sounds like it's made for someone into classic music, and I'm definitely not that person. :(

There were a few nice post-rock bands from Korea that I used to listen to:

https://apollo18.bandcamp.com
https://modsdive.bandcamp.com
https://seoultierpark.bandcamp.com

I'd recommend especially Apollo 18, a very powerful trio :headbang:
