Maybe check out the Russian band The Morningside. First two albums are doomy post-metal. The third one is more post-bm; Katatonia is a reference they wear on their sleeve.

a more general rec would be to browse through the SLOWBURN catalogue: bands like Osoka, Fading Waves and others might do the trick.

I like Whales and Aurora from slow burn, also very much enjoy The Morningside, and Watered. Looking for good instrumental stuff. Anyone have candidates for the year?

I find the debut superior to all 3, with the secong being the least interesting.

Amazing mix of dark jazz and post-rock, a recommended listen:

And this hardcore/post-rock band too, songs are short but good:

Mother, Sludgy Post-Metal

Eleanora, more toward hardcore/screamo

I remember listening this one, almost gave up after half the first track but thankfully the tempo went up, Losing Her and Alcoholism are the fastest and most interesting ones. Their other albums also have some really nice songs.

Some post-rock from this year:

Haven't had time to check out all of these yet, but Lowering sounds really cool. That vibe is pretty much up my alley.

I can recommend EndName, particularly their more recent albums Triatom and Eva, which take a more post-metal approach.

Pyramids have not been referenced in this thread, to me they're one of the weirdest (but quite pleasant) offerings in the genre.

Miscellen's new album, offered for free, is some very fine, dynamic, emotional slighty electro post-rock I have to mention here. It has a vintage 90ies flair that I can't really connect to any band in particular, maybe The God Machine would be a good point of comparison; a bit of Pitchshifter for the dark brooding touch and Prong too for the punch.... It's worth a try certainly, and a few bucks too.

Nice blackened, hardcoreish post-metal, they released a new album this month, from the little I listened I think it's even better than Reprieve;

Impressive, experimental post-rock full of new ideas, kinda neoclassical, almost jazzy sometimes. Those who like Lowering may enjoy this one;

One of my fav albums released in these last years. Perfect combination of doom, post-metal and shoegaze. Ffo jesu, King Woman, The Angelic Process

The new Amenra kicks ass. The inclusion of ethereal female vocals and spectral spoken-voice lines in Dutch works terribly well as counterpoints to the anxious post-doom soundscapes.

So there's this band called Maybeshewill. They take a basic post rock foundation, add some orchestral stuff, occasionally use some glitch beats and samples, and kick everything up to 11. They're the most intense post rock band I've ever heard, to the point that it's hard to even call them post rock. They also have a LOT of metal influence, throwing heavy-as-balls riffs into otherwise chill songs. They have some borderline sludge metal songs. If you're going to listen to an album, try I Was Here for a Moment, Then I Was Gone for the more pretty stuff, or Not for Want of Trying for the heavy and sludgy stuff.

If you're into the breaky stuff by Maybeshewill, it's pretty much straight 65daysofstatic influence from the early albums. They didn't do the hard guitar riffs, though. That's probably mostly Boris influence.

You're definitely right about the 65daysofstatic influence. I'm very familiar with 65dos, and I actually discovered Maybeshewill back when I was looking for similar bands. In fact, I think I was listening to both of these bands before I ever tried metal. At first I was a little put off by how similar the two sounded, but nowadays I can hear how big their musical differences actually are. They both have a similar cinematic post rock foundation and glitch elements, but 65dos leans more on the glitch/electronic stuff (and currently make exclusively electronic music), and Maybeshewill mostly sticks with even more cinematic post rock.

I haven't heard of Boris though. If they have the same kind of hard riffs, I'll definitely be checking them out. Any album recommendations?

I think Amplifier Worship and Flood are classics in their own right. I always come back to Pink - it starts off with a spaced-out, droney, shoegazing song, and then the rest of the album is just banging noisy heavy rock, in a particular Japanese style. Their discography is very varied, and each album has a lot of variety too. Heavy Rocks is a bit weird even for them.

Pretty good ethereal melodic dark post rock. Both male and female vocals convey a nice feeling of spleen.

I'd actually go with 'The Quietest Place on Earth' on this one. Such a beautiful sophomore album from these Aussies.

As for less well-known stuff, I'd consider 'Karas' post-metal. Was bummed to find out they stopped shipping CDs overseas as of lately, fearing they'd get lost or something. Still, great album.

Crushing post-stuff from Belgium, industrialized death-ish doomy metal, stubornly hammering, packed with atmosphere. It's the Sludge version of Ice Ages, sort of. Perfect sound if you ask me.

I'm look for some post-rock with a dark or even sinister sound if anyone can help, something which is quite different to the euphoric crescendos and bittersweet melancholy which saturates the current scene. For example, think the tense build up in GY!BE's East Hastings or the dissonance of Mogwai's Like Herod.

That Mogwai song always sounded like grunge to me - at least at its most visceral.

A Swarm of the Sun is some of the more tense, sinister sounding post-rock. Generally, I guess the bands that went more in the direction of Like Herod ended up being post-metal, like Pelican and Russian Circles and such.

If you don't know them already, early 65daysofstatic had some pretty tense songs. Not sure if they'd fit the dark and sinister vibe you're asking for, but the Mogwai song you linked reminds me of them. They also strayed away from the usual quiet-loud-quiet bullshit.

Lemme know if that's the kind of thing you're looking for. It's been a while since my last post-rock spree, so I don't exactly remember all the bands I liked. But I can try to find them.

I've just listened to A Swarm of the Sun and they're definitely what I'm looking for, thanks. I like the fact that they are not instrumental and utilise shorter song lengths, breaking somewhat with post-rock conventions fairly successfully.

Glad I could help! While I'm here, I'll walk you through their discography so you have an idea of where to start.

You know The Fall Of Math, that's my personal favorite of theirs. One Time For All Time is sort of the same direction as The Fall Of Math, but more somber, and with more glitch elements. The Destruction of Small Ideas is a little disputed for 65dos fans, some love it, some hate it. It drops some of the electronic elements and goes in a more basic rock direction. It's not my favorite, but I've always enjoyed it. We Were Exploding Anyway is basically a dance album with post rock elements, and it's a fan favorite. Wild Light is the album the band is most proud of, and it's a lot more artsy. It also has some of my personal favorite songs, including "Taipei" and "Unmake the Wild Light". The No Man's Sky OST is obviously a video game soundtrack, but I think it stands apart from the game. You can listen to it as an album without ever playing No Man's Sky, and it's one of the best albums 65dos has ever put out. After that, 65dos have been making exclusively electronic music. You can hear that on replicr, 2019, as well as dozens of EP's on their Bandcamp.

Since we're already talking about post-rock, I'll ask for some recommendations too. Hit me up with some post-rock bands or albums that don't follow the cliche quiet-loud-quiet template (example below). I'm not looking for anything in particular in terms of style or mood, just nothing that sounds like it belongs in an inspirational beer commercial.

Here's what I DON'T want. The song starts with some quiet somber guitar, then builds up to a big climax in the second half. I find this structure predictable and limiting. I like more logical and fluid song progressions, think early GY!BE.

I was listening to a band named Novarupa yesterday and have been floored by the emotion, variety, evocative power the songwriting brilliantly succeeds in achieving. The music verges towards Rock much more than Metal and it has NOTHING to do with the standard pattern you don't want to hear, it's much more organic.
