Hey, since Sean's passing this week I've been getting my progressive records a lot of spins. I'm wondering if there's any other great bands you guys know in this vein? Personally I prefer the instrumental stuff, but I don't mind vocalists. It can be rock/metal I don't really care. I'm big into RIO prog otherwise, as well as a lot of jazz and contemporary classical so feel free to throw some curve balls.

Aghora would fit right in with the bands mentioned in the title.

Japanese bands Happy Family and Tipographica (both active mainly in the 90s). Also, besides Planet X, Virgil Donati's solo albums could appeal to you.

Thanks for the recommendations I'll be checking them out. I'm already familiar with a few like Continuo Renacer, Happy Family, Excivious and Planet X, but lots of stuff I'm not familiar with as well.

Alarum are a great Cynic influenced band as well. I'm most familiar with the Eventuality album but I also quite liked Natural Causes. They only have three albums anyhow so really any of them should fit your requirements well, although Palfreyman's vocal approach is kinda odd and not similar to Cynic.

Have you heard Spiral Architect's A Sceptic's Universe? It's a classic, but it hasn't been mentioned in the thread yet.

Spiral Architect members also played in the short-lived Twisted Into Form. Despite the name, they don't really sound like Forbidden. A little rougher, but very similar to the above.
