Hello.

*I apologize in advance if the request is too vague*

I am looking for two kinds of songs/albums:

1) with lyrics about a person who wanders alone through bleak landscape(s) in some fictional world / or in some strange and depressing variation of the real world. Examples:

- in a world that is described in this interpretation of Dolorian's music (it's about their self-titled album):

Spoiler: show
Quote:
A good way of picturing the music is by imagining a little colourless kid wandering a grey world with plenty of dark shadows, but no lights. All around the kid stands huge factories in ruins. There are no one there except this kid. Shadows walk everywhere and the kid can see them. But not feel, smell, hear or truly percieve them in any way. Instead the kid wanders this world alone in its own silent misery. This music truly makes you feel little and alone in a cold, mercyless world.

- in a post-apocalyptic world:

Spoiler: show
Void of Silence - The Grave of Civilization

Relics and dust beneath
My weary feet
All that remains
Of the world I remember
Acrid and fertile the stench of decay
Enters my mind
And writes in my soul
This desolate place, once so alive
Is now dead and cold
I envy the dead
The grave of civilization
It stretches all around me
The silence is painful
It cannot be kept out
I’m left alone with
The sound of emptiness
My footfalls echo off
The monoliths of grey concrete
Relics and dust beneath
My weary feet, all that remains
Of the world I remember
Paint with destruction
Upon canvas of concrete
The proud laid low
Lives are rendered in bone
Where once the hives of man
Strove to pierce the sky
A warren of decay spreads
For mile upon mile
A gentle blanket of ash
Smothers remembrance and grief
But none are left alive
No one still breathing to weep
Ominous mournful clouds
Shroud the ghost of the sun
I wander these ruins alone
And beg for the end to come
Skeletal remains of buildings
Claw at the poisoned sky
Like withered fossilised hands
Of long dead gods
Corpse city shells
Of extinct titan insects
The howl of the restless wind
Through the rusted pipes
An assemblage of melancholy artifice
The arrogant folly
Of mankind’s avarice
The swollen red sun sets
For the final time
In a thousand years
The dead glassy earth is growing cold
Filthy snow tumbles
Form a sickly glowing sky
It settles upon the endless
Ruin and bones
There can be no return from this
I envy the dead

As for emotions/views in lyrics and vocals, I'm looking for songs/albums that have more emphasis on sadness/fear/despair and less emphasis on anger/misanthropy.

2) with lyrics that describe a lonely walk in some quite usual/familiar place, but at nighttime. An example:

Spoiler: show
Tor Lundvall - Haunted by the Sky

Down by the river, late at night
I follow the shadows in the orange light
Thin trees whisper, night birds cry
The pale moon smiles low in the sky

Stand by the stone bridge in the empty park
Watching the strange clouds rush by in the dark
Waiting in silence as time slips by
Alone and haunted by the sky

Lyrics should have ''first person + present tense'' type of narration.
A genre of music is not that important, but atmospheric and slow/mid tempo music (metal or non-metal) would be a plus.

Thanks in advance.

An interesting request. Here's a few songs that immediately spring to mind, though they may be a bit vague for you.

The 3rd & The Mortal "Autopoéma"
Spoiler: show
I walk alone
Not because I'm lost
But because I want to
They call my name
They believe that I'm scared
They believe that I am scared
But the death is my friend
They can catch me
Try to thrill me
And possess me
They can loathe me
Try to force me into changing
Although they know my heart
That I will not
Obey their rules
I do not stand for all I say
Do I face resistance I turn away
Close my eyes afraid to stay
But honesty is my plead
Truth stands further in the need
For my honour I might bleed

In The Woods "Yearning The Seeds Of A New Dimension"
Spoiler: show
Among hills I have wandered
Through forests so cold
Over mountains a raging thunder
Followed the ways foretold
A request a "leave me be"...
Through the shape that I longed for...
Withering visions...
Bleeding to search for the more...
Behold the memories within,
A questful battle to win.
Towards which he is carrying,
The burden named destiny.
It is poundering proud on his shoulders.
Creating and Dreaming,
Is it all the same?
As I touch this flame...
...Of mine.
I await your call,
Trough body, spirit and mind,
I shine, I shine.
The forces of Prima Mater.
Unite us this heathen night,
Yearning your unknown mysterious beauty.

Revelation "Natural Steps"
Spoiler: show
I move on as if something keeps pulling me forward
I don't want to go too far for fear of not wanting to return
One eye looking forward, the other looking back
I wander from the external world
An impressionable soul in an inherent spectacle
A minuscule player in a monstrous entity
I stare at the palatial displays
Yearning to be a part of it
If I could fly, I would fly the infinite heavens
If I could paint, I would paint the endless skies
I take the natural steps to my destiny
The strive for immortality is awakened by thoughts of reality
For what seems like days, turns out to be only minutes
The pleasure of the soul is only an arm's length away

Edit:

And of course, this:

Cathedral "Equilibrium"
Spoiler: show
Lost in the battlefield of opposite extremes.
I ponder on the embankment that stands in between
The monochrome and color entirety I see
The beauty and chaos of fate and destiny.

Stand in the balance of forest equilibrium.
Absorb every aspect of forest equilibrium.

The fatality of optimism shall we not embrace
But evolve into the actual with grace.
Outweigh the balance through excessive choice
I return to the wisdom of this equilateral place.

Rebuild thy strength here in forest equilibrium.
Through irreligious choice in forest equilibrium.

Come walk with me through violet smokescreens
Where both feet tread upon joys and agonies
Calm in all we see, masters of destiny.

balbulus, thank you for the recommendations!
Interesting lyrics, and very beautiful music and vocals. ♥
The lyrics don't exactly fit into the kind of lyrics/mood/atmosphere I asked for in my 'original' request, but I like this way of looking at this request so similar recommendations are more than welcome. :)
If anyone can remember and recommend some other songs with lyrics that describe a process of searching/finding some peace/strength in a similar "walking/wandering" way but in the 'normal' real world or in some fictional world that is less bleak/depressing than the worlds from my examples, I'd be happy to hear them.
...

Sorry, I was not clear enough when I described this request, so I'll try to describe it in more detail.

balbulus wrote:
An interesting request. Here's a few songs that immediately spring to mind, though they may be a bit vague for you.

Songs with person's vague/strange thoughts and feelings in lyrics are absolutely OK for this request, but some part(s) of lyrics must make it clear that this person wanders alone in a place that is very strange and bleak/depressive, i.e. a description of landscapes must include some specific details that can give the listener feelings of desolation, sadness/fear and hopeless (the more uncomfortable, frightening and desperate, the better).

The song "Yearning the Seeds of a New Dimension" is one of the most beautiful and atmospheric metal songs I've ever heard, but this kind of nature-related black metal song/album is... well, very beautiful and a bit too 'comfortable', - it's great, and I very much enjoy this song, but the atmosphere and the lyrics are the exact opposite of the kind of song that I tried to describe in the first part of the request.

I think this quote from a review of "Heart of the Ages" can give a better understanding of why it does not fit into my original request:

Quote:
It takes you off to a new world that is worth exploring several times over in a very ethereal and serene, yet beautifully melancholic sounsdscape that is extremely easy to lose yourself in. [...] If one of black metal’s strangest and most distinct qualities is the ability to create another world and then take you to it, Heart of the Ages does so with such immersive detail to their songs and such rich sonic textures, you swear you’d never want to leave this world in all its dark beauty.

From my point of view, if a song makes me feel so good that I don't want to leave a world that music+lyrics create, than this song is not bleak and depressing enough.
If lyrics describe a world that looks and feels as bleak and depressing as the bleakest/the ugliest, the most depressing and lifeless landscapes from the real world / or even worse, than this song is much closer to what I am trying to find.
(Of course all these feelings are very subjective, and the request is way too vague, so I am fine with subjective recommendations).

Songs that describe wandering through some depressing industrial/urban landscapes (especially dilapidated or ruined, like on this picture, for example: https://t4.ftcdn.net/jpg/03/34/70/29/36 ... tHQl4Z.jpg), abandoned villages, and some strange and depressing nature landscapes (like on these pictures, for example: https://image.shutterstock.com/image-ph ... 383721.jpg, https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=dead+ ... 25&bih=454) fit perfectly into the first part of this request.

Also, songs that describe wandering through depressing landscapes in some fantasy world or songs that describe the real world with some fantasy/mystical elements are ok but only those songs where all these strange 'elements' of flora/fauna/ghosts/etc. are just a 'passive' part of a landscape/atmosphere (like those shadows from the description of Dolorian's music).

Ok, I hope my explanations/examples have made this request clearer.

Well, non-metal, but you could not have described Franz Schubert's Winterreise song cycle any more precisely.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winterreise
https://hampsongfoundation.org/resource ... nslations/

The performance I always come back to is the first I heard:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVkjFopBaeM
(I don't know how much of the whole cycle is on YT.)

Perhaps the first album of The Chasm will do.

Lyrics:

Spoiler: show
In pursuit of Clarividence to live is to sleep
To die is to awake in the twilight of the fears

Those countless melodies of hate
In the oceans of fresh sadness
The sound of the other side
Is the mirror of my grave's face

But I have pride and force
My heart is the fire of hope
The anger will make me Immortal
For me to die is to awake

Ecstasy in the nocturnal winds
Light and visions of grey faces
Vortex of innocence and desire
No beauty nor happiness

Vortex of innocence and desire...

Show me the memories, Honoris lux infinitus
I want to be forsaken under my forgotten lands

Hear the whispers of the moon

Forever my will is strong and my hate is everlasting
My bride is the majesty, she comes in the
Honoris lux infinitus...

Light and visions of grey faces
No beauty, nor happiness...

DeathfareDevil, colin040, thanks for the interesting recommendations and for the links/examples. :)

This is great! I knew the composer's name but didn't listen to these songs before, or maybe I just forgot about it... *shame*
I've read the translations of the lyrics, and yes, these songs about person's wandering are very sad and desperate, and most of them fit into the request. There are many descriptions of landscapes: the world itself (as a whole) does not look/feel very strange or "as lifeless/desolate as possible", but the person's perception and description of the world/winter landscapes are definitely bleak and very depressive/hopeless.
I love the music, and I also like the vocal performance on the song you have posted, but unfortunately I do not speak German, so I'll listen to translated versions of these songs (fortunately, I've found all the songs of this cycle with a vocal performance in a language that I know).

I like the music + the atmosphere and the vocals, and there are many very strange and bleak/depressing landscapes in the lyrics, but the name of the album and the direction/style of the lyrics make me think that this album is about person's walking/wandering in his internal world ("microcosm"?), especially when it comes to phrases like "the pyramid of feelings" and "the oceans of fresh sadness", - I just can not imagine this kind of landscape in any external world (real or fantasy).
All the songs on the album have interesting lyrics (I like the imagery, but it would be better for me if the lyrics had less emphasis on anger/hate), but I am looking for songs that describe wandering in a world that looks and feels like an external one.
I apologize again for such a vague request, I should've clarifyed it.

This one might be a stretch but the first line of the lyrics is "ändlösa tunnellandskap" (endless tunnel landscapes):

The music is sufficiently depressing so hopefully it'll match what you're looking for.

Korpgud, thanks for the recommendation. :)

A process of wandering through tunnel landscapes definitely can be very depressing and frightening (for example, photos of these nature landscapes give me very unpleasant feelings - https://i.pinimg.com/originals/5f/c1/82 ... fbb66d.jpg, https://previews.123rf.com/images/shani ... enegro.jpg, and I'm too afraid to even think about wandering through endless and deep underground tunnels).
It would be perfect if there was some more detailed description of those landscapes and person's feelings in the lyrics (because it gives the listener that specific "a real time and place" kind of feeling, i.e. when tunnels are *literally* physical objects, and not just person's abstract images/thoughts à la "my life is like wandering through endless tunnel landscapes"), but the music + the vocals on this song really make you feel that these tunnel landscapes are very dark, disturbing, and hopeless. There's a lot of despair in the vocals (and this kind of mood fits perfectly into the request), but, again, it would be better for me if the lyrics/the vocals (in the second part of the song) had less emphasis on anger/hate.
