I'm looking for "thinking man's" metal - cerebral stuff. Any genre of metal is applicable. Here are some examples of what I deem fitting, for your reference:

Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk

Emperor - Prometheus

Emperor - IX Equibrium

Opeth - Still Life

Opeth - Blackwater Park

Ingurgitating Oblivion - Vision Wallows in Symphonies of Light

Gorguts - Colored Sands

Gorguts - Pleiades' Dust

Cynic - Focus

Animals as Leaders - Weightless

Animals as Leaders - S/T

Possible Contenders:

Atheist - Unquestionable Presence

Deathspell Omega - Paracletus

Artificial Brain - Labyrinth Constellation

Artificial Brain - Infrared Horizon

You can start with everything Nightgaunt ever said he hated.

Om has been giving my brain quite a bit to turn over lately, especially "Conference of the Birds". The lyrics are very dense and interesting, loads of religious and psuedo-scientific references, paired with very meditative music. That may appeal to the side of you that likes Opeth. For something more contemplative musically I've been highly engaged with the latest Havohej album, "Table of Uncreation". Someone around here mentioned recently that black metal is a style of music founded on a feeling and atmosphere more than a particular set of musical techniques or sounds, and this album certainly pushes that notion. How much can you replace riffs with field recordings of a wind tunnel and still have black metal? Quite excellent stuff.

Hey, thanks for your response. I appreciate it. Vile Luxury is a really cool album, and I really enjoyed some of the Suffering Hour material I'd heard a year or so ago. I'll check out the rest of what you've suggested.

Spiral Architect's lone record - A Sceptic's Universe.

It took me a while to get into it when I first heard it, but I'm so glad I did.

The Twisted into Form record is similar.

Jute Gyte definitely belongs in this thread. Adam Kalmbach has become pretty well-known for his complex theoretical analysis and dense microtonal explorations. It can be fairly intimidating to the uninitiated. The vast and varied discography can be off-putting too, but the core BM releases can be grouped into trilogies with similar covers.
