So I like to have ambient/repetitive noise while I sleep, and I think I can definitely work metal into this. Atmospheric black metal bands and Drone have worked well in the past to drown out noise, so what would be some good bands in this vein? I've used SunO))) the past few days to success. It doesn't necessarily even have to be super mellow, but something that's thick/layered and repetitive would be great.

Until death Overtakes Me sounds like a sleeping pill. Joke aside, it's some super drawn-out, blurred and dark Funeral Doom of cosmic dimensions. Everything the project put out is free too:

I recommend https://udom.bandcamp.com/album/monolith-remastered which is very synth-based and soft, it seems appropriate for a bedridden exploration; the more recent albums can have a grittier edge, they're excellent too.

As example: https://udom.bandcamp.com/album/as-dead-as-time

I've had great success with really drawn out atmospheric bands like Evilfeast (third album in particular) and Midnight Odissey (first album)

Velvet Cacoon's Genevieve is also quite soothing once you gat past the wall of noise! Also Tiamat's A Deeper Kind of Slumber lulls like a boss

Let me know if they work :)

Shape of Despair - Illusion's Play. There's a lengthy ambient passage in the second song that really lulls you. Their other albums should work too, at least Monotony Fields and Angels of Distress, but especially Illusion's Play, as the atmosphere is pretty calming and deeply melancholic without being agitating or anxious.

How about Burzum? Varg has always said that his music is evening music.

I had an insomnia phase and had a good result with Agalloch, specially The Mantle, and Alcest. Souvenirs d'un autre monde and Écailles de lune would be my choice, but just because those were the only albums released at that time.

Outside metal, if your interested on post rock, try God is an astronaut (All Is Violent, All Is Bright) and Mogwai (The Hawk Is Howling, Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will). Again, there is no specific reason behind choosing those albums except that they work for me (and had them on my mp3 as a teenager).

As have been said before, Burzum is also a good choice, Hvis Lyset Tar Oss' or Filosofem. If dark ambient is your thing, you con go deeper on his most recent discography.

There's this female fronted band Dharma that is not particularly slow or whatever, but I literally never managed to finish listening to their 2008 album, I kept falling asleep. Uncanny actually. Not sure if it's going to work for anyone else, but just in case...

Not drone or anything: Honestly, I remember sleeping really well on Blood Incantation - Starspawn.

I assume you already know of Darkspace? If not, it's very good sleeping music on account of being very consistent in style and sound, with exceptionally long tracks too.
Xasthur would also be a recommendation on my part. Nortt I've also found to be great for this purpose!

ORANSSI PAZUZU. I've dozed off several times in the afternoon with Valonielu or Mestarin kynsi playing, not too loud, in the background. The music takes your mind on a strange and fascinating journey

If you like stoner/doom at all, I'd also recommend Yuri Gagarin (instrumental stoner/space rock) and Samsara Blues Experiment.

Om and Sleep come to mind. As does the entire genre of atmospheric black metal.

Lustre is an old favorite of mine for these endeavors, specially They Awoke to the Scent of Spring.

I've (almost) fallen asleep to shit as loud and crazy as Cattle Decap, so I can help. Like you said in OP, atmo black definitely works. I'd recommend a fairly obscure band called Astral Path, for their beautiful spacey atmospheres. Fen is also great if I remember correctly.

Outside of metal, I'd recommend trying post rock. I'll also recommend instrumental dark folk, that stuff is always simple and beautiful. Start with Vàli and Ulvesang, or Novemthree if you wanna hear some singing. There also a YouTube channel called In The Woods that has both dark folk and post rock albums, if you decide you're interested in that. But my strongest non-metal sleep recommendation is dark ambient. The next time you're tired, get comfy and put on Seraphim by How To Disappear Completely. Those loops are beautiful. I've only managed about three real naps in my life due to my ADHD stims keeping me awake, and two of those naps only happened because I was sick. But the third time was while listening to that album.

Great thread by the way! I'll try some of the bands suggested here the next time I decide to try napping.

Voidsphere, Bunkur - Bludgeon, or TenHornedBeast? I didn't think much of TenHornedBeast, but I've only heard the first CDR release. I'm a big fan of Endvra, so I was disappointed with that direction, but it might be in the realm of what you hope to find. Speaking of Endvra, does it have to be metal and not just ambient or noise? There are ambient noise artists who use guitars and distortion in a longform, ambient way. I'm no expert on Skullflower/Total/Sunroof/The Hototogisu, but that also might be a place to look.

Definitely concur with stuff like Anathema and Tiamat. How their material sends you off to weird and wonderful places in the land of Nod.

I prefer falling asleep to music, and there's a few albums that goes on repeat:

Summoning - Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame
Austere - To Lay like Old Ashes
Emyn Muil - Elenion Ancalima
Wongraven - Fjelltronen
Lustre - Wonder
Lustre - The Ashes of Light'
Moonsorrow - Verisäkeet
Mesarthim - Isolate
Mesarthim - The Density Parameter
Left Horn of the Ram - Final Moments of a Dying Star

Eldamar - The Force of the Ancient Land

And I don't fall asleep to these because they are boring (with the exception of Eldamar), but rather because I find them to be extremely relaxing and beautiful. Very calming. But they are albums I listen to a lot other than when going to sleep as well, so they're albums I really enjoy on a regular basis.

As for Eldamar's "The Force of the Ancient Land", I kinda find it boring and it's not an album I usually enjoy listening to. But it works well when going to sleep for some reason. In that sense it stands out a lot from the rest of the lot.

I enjoy taking a nap to Tristania and such. Soothing female vocals to comfort...

Objective greatest metal album of all time

Very soft, late summer-y funeral doom from the masters themselves

Bell Witch’s Mirror Reaper is such a nice album to fall asleep to. It’s so hypnotic and beautiful.
The only downside is that your sleep might be very depressing
