That is the best way to name the stuff I'm looking for. Basically EUPM with a slightly murky underproduction, tons of atmosphere, crunchy guitars and a vocalist who's evidently competent even though he isn't singing his ass out. Examples of this include Kamelot's Siége Perilous, Zackrisson-era Nocturnal Rites and Persuader's The Hunter. And I guess Lost Horizon's Awakening the World can also pass.

Hariddon Lee is a great power vocalist. Would you say Mental Reservation and Ball Of The Damned also count as crude?

Another band that comes to my mind with what you are asking is Divine Weep's Omega Man although there are some blackened vocals in there.

i only have the first two scanner albums... i didnt care about their later material. not for lack of quality, just my tastes had switched... so i can't tell you :/ i did listen to one album on a tour bus once and it was decent.
