Well, I know one pretty fantastic album, but it's in the black metal vein, not doomy at all, so...

not melodic, but crushing and sad, this is Mistress of the Dead romantic take on FD:

Maybe more what you expect from your description is Shroud of Bereavement; piano is steadily used to sustain various lush, melo guitar lines:

Mistress of the Dead wasn't what I was looking for, but amazing none the less...I was so impressed with both links, that the OCD in me is already eyeing that 15 CD box set.....lol

Shroud of Bereavement is more up my alley and I do want to dive into them more, but still not the 'sound' i am searching for in my head...

Thank you though for both introductions....Gonna spend the next day or so with both bands...

The first song from Dutch doom/death band Castle's self-titled album has a prominent piano part towards the end, but it's more triumphant sounding than sorrowful.

A bit of a curveball suggestion, but check out Erik Satie's "Ogives". Four short slow pieces of piano music that he wrote trying to capture the sombre feeling he got from looking at gothic arches, they are basically doom played on a piano. Beautiful.

Anathema's Crestfallen. It opens with the piano, and the guitars slowly take over the piano.

Might need some examples of what kind of "crushing" you're looking for. When I think "piano forward doom" a ton of gothic/doom songs came to mind, but they're more "emotionally crushing" as opposed to "crushingly heavy".

Here are a couple of examples that may work though.

a certain classic does come to mind:

and a lesser known gem:

(and if the chords/piano riff remind you of a bruce springsteen song, you'd be correct :D )

personally i don't count type o as doom, but some people do...
