This isn't really metal, but I'm sure metalheads will have something to offer.
Do you know any depressive bands/albums in the style of these songs? I tried looking into later Katatonia, but I only liked a few songs from Discouraged Ones. I didn't enjoy their nu/alternative era.

Then I classified those songs as gothic rock/ethereal wave and tried looking into those genres. Unfortunately, those genres are occupied by goths who overload their sound with dance rhythms, which makes all the sadness and depressiveness go away. The only band that sounds like this is Lycia (especially from A Day in the Stark Corner to Cold, Cold sounds the closest to what I want). It's not surprising, considering their influence on gothic/depressive metal scene, but it seems no one pursues the same sound as them. Another band I liked is Autumn's Grey Solace, but even though they are one of my favourite bands now, they aren't really depressive. Would also like to mention David Galas, he's a member of Lycia and his solo stuff is pretty sad. I think he was featured on metal-archives for a little bit, so even though his music is not metal, he's not that far removed from it.

Unfortunately, that's it, because goths don't really like the bands that don't have dance rhythms.

Here are some links to the songs that I enjoy:

Canaan?
Their songs are very atmospheric and depressive, but there are too many instrumental electronic tracks on most of their albums..

The album "The Unsaid Words" is my favorite:

This song is also very beautiful:

I checked the last song, it indeed sounds like what I'm looking for. Thank you very much, I need to listen to this band.

I know Paradise Lost. I haven't heard their later albums, but they probably don't have a lot of songs like that. Thanks for the song, though.

Very interesting, even though it's more emo that goth (I assume). I will check them out still.

You probably checked them out already, but I hear a lot of early The Cure in that Katatonia song. Many tracks on Seventeen Seconds and Faith have that hazy stillness to them - and none of the beats that would take over from Pornography on.

Spoiler: show

Otherwise, you may love slowcore, which is basically very dry and depressive indie rock, sometimes with distinct goth undertones. The following three bands are big favourites of mine.

Also, while this may be a bit different, I really liked LEYA’s recent album Flood Dream. Check out ‘Flow’ especially, very eerie.

I liked some The Cure songs, but I never checked out their earlier albums. Thanks, I will do it.

Slowcore sounds promising, at least judging by these songs. Thank you very much for your suggestions, now I know the direction in which to explore.

Do you know the Dead Can Dance debut? Pretty different from the stuff they're famous for, might be the right thing for you if you like that Katatonia track.

Katatonia are super influenced by Red House Painters, in particular the Down Colourful Hill album. I'll link you a song

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uXlmymwJfy4

Also Slowdive have some really sad, ethereal songs, Dagger for example

Yes, I do. I wouldn't say they are depressive, but their debut is definitely a very unique gothic rock album. I'm actually looking for something like this too, I mean gothic rock without most of the annoying cliches.

Didn't know about the first band, will check them out, thanks. I already knew about Slowdive, but for some reason I only like some of their songs.

If you like slowcore, you have to check 40 Watt Sun, their first album "The Inside Room" is more "metalized" (using a lot of distorted guitars) but the second album "Wider Than The Sky" sounds a lot like Codeine.

If you are into Discouraged Ones era Katatonia, check Autumnblaze, specially their album "Bleak":

Honestly, I don't really think slowcore is for me. The songs by Katatonia/October Tide that I liked were ethereal wave, so that's probably the genre I'm looking for. Sadly, this genre doesn't seem very developed, since I wasn't able to find any other good bands (apart from Canaan).

Basically I want stuff with melancholic and melodic riffs.

This is the kind of stuff I love. Unfortunately, a lot of ethereal wave tends to sound a bit too poppy for my tastes, whereas I prefer the really bleak, gothic stuff.

I think you would like Soul Whirling Somewhere's first album, Eating the Sea. Depressive ethereal wave stuff, directly influenced by This Mortal Coil, without all the extra bullshit.

Spoiler: show

This Empty Flow might be a bit too clean and not ambient-sounding enough for what you're looking for, but they're definitely worth a shot.

Spoiler: show

Cloud Rat's 2019 EP 'Do Not Let Me Off the Cliff' is straight up depressive ethereal wave with clean vocals, and it's pretty beautiful.

Spoiler: show

Box and the Twins are pretty great, but they aren't entirely depressive. Gloomy, but not completely depressive.

I know you posted this a year ago, but the original thread died 2 years ago, so I didn't see your message. Funnily enough I was again looking for this kind of music and accidentally stumbled on my own thread. I'm checking out your recommendations and so far it sounds really close to what I wanted, I enjoy it a lot. Especially Box and the Twins (even though it's not that depressive). I would say it's closer to coldwave than ethereal, but still hits almost the same.
