I have a few black metal albums, and I like some blackened death and blackened thrash, but I am unable to appreciate most black metal. Can anyone suggest some classic pure black metal albums (I'd prefer older "must have" kind of stuff from late eighties/early ninetys) that lean toward a cripser sort of riff-based death metal sound -- crunchy guitars, prominant bass licks, double-bass drums with lots of fills and tempo changes, brutal vocals, lots of leads/solos, good production -- that kind of thing. Sorry for the awful description -- I'm groping in the dark here. Maybe I just don't like pure black metal.

You should listen to Carpticon's "Master Morality". Some extremely catchy black metal on that album with great vox. It's a very riff oriented style of black metal containing lots of double bass and blast beat drumming that is constantly changing to follow the guitars. It's not greatly produced, but the quality isn't terrible either.

I already have bands that are often recommended like Sacramentum, Dawn, Necrophobic, Abyssos (that I've seen labelled as a Dissection ripoff), I also discovered Vinterland some time ago, and know Lord Belial... anything else for me ? Even ripoffs would do I think but i need MOAR haha
Check out Ritual Day from China for something quite similar to early Sacramentum.

I am digging the Carpticon. Also, to whoever gave me the Absu suggestion I am liking that too.

I was also following the Varathron discussion. I am really liking that whole Hellenic sound. An obvious one that hasn't been mentioned: Rotting Christ.

I am still feeling guilty for not being able to fully appreciate most of what I've heard of the BM classics like Celtic Frost, Mayhem, Burzum, Gorgoroth, etc. -- On the other hand, I've always liked Mercyful Fate and Venom, but I suppose they don't really count.

Finally, another band I've discovered recently is Melechesh. Any other prominant BM acts that incorporate exotic/mid eastern mood into their sound?

Thanks, Aaron

I hope you guys can help me, I'm looking for some black metal to listen to - I like most of the more "popular" bm bands, like Marduk, Emperor, Darkthrone and Celtic Frost, but I would like to get to know a band that hasn't yet broken through and is still largely unknown, like a band who's evolution I could follow, or so to speak, you know what I mean? Any ideas are appreciated. Although I'm not much into depressive bm bands, or bands that resemble Xasthur.

Check out Gospel of Grief. They recently formed, have only one demo out (Black Origins of the Universe - each song of it is a natural born killer) and their full-length is almost ready (and it sounds black as hell and heavy as iron). Awesome =)

Try - Ceremonial Castings, Dark Forest (CAN), Cryptic Wintermoon, Coldworld, Forest of Fog, Taake, Vreid, Kampfar - various and random (too many to list!) stlyes of black metal to try. For bands that have yet to make an impact I would recommend checking out the Sogn scene (Norway), especially if you are a fan of Windir (the best!) try Mistur, Sigtyr and Feigd, three great bands playing the same style as Windir and worth a following especially Mistur, they have their debut album recording and are currently trying to get a record deal, Stian (ex Windir) plays in them and if you liked Valfar's work this will surely be a hit.

Anyone heard Entrails' "Serpent Seeds"? Its a BM side project of Blackie from Root. I can't find a download for it anywhere to give it a listen, but the review linked on their page makes some very promising comparisons to amazing bands. I really need more Blackie riffs in my life...hoping this is quality.

Also, this might sound a bit ridiculous to everyone else but I finally had the first Burzum album click last night. I guess I should mention this is the only Burzum album I've really listened to attentively. I never imagined Burzum to be music I would find myself headbanging along with, but I was really into the riffing on this album and quite surprised how traditionally influenced a lot of it sounded. I'm looking forward to trying to delve into the rest of his stuff now, I'm just hoping the riffs aren't completely washed out by his need to create "ambient" pieces.

This is really a great sound. If you like those two bands then you'll definitely enjoy the first Thou Art Lord album and the first Nergal album as well.

Zemial is also similar but with an extra dose of Bathory first-wave riffing.

Necromantia is also quite similar, just a bit weirder. They don't actually use guitars, but rather two different basses to construct their melodies, giving them a bit more "twang" in the string section. I would also say that their use of keyboards are a bit more theatrical than most Hellenic bands, as well.

Kawir take the Hellenic sound and combine it with keyboard heavy Norse-styled pagan black metal. A marriage of Rotting Christ and Kampfar might be a good descriptor.

Oh, you definitely need to hear Countess. Countess is a one man black metal act from Holland and they happen to be one of the oldest second wave-acts from said country (along with the criminally unknown Bestial Summoning) and sweet fuck of the old do they rock. Quite literally, it seems. You see, Countess isn't just another oldschool black metal act. Countess does happen to black metal of the oldschool variety (hard to say otherwise considering that the band formed in 92') and they certainly do worship the old metal, but there wasn't (and still isn't) a metal band like Countess. Orlok (of Countess) managed to take the sounds of legendary old metal acts like Mercyful Fate, Manowar and other legends, bend it over a black metal frame and throw in a bit of rock n' roll-ish flavor (not to say that Countess is a Black n' Roll band) to create some truly unique and fucking heavy metal. Great band, great discography. There are almost no albums that I cannot recommend.

If you happen to like Countess, then Mountain King should be right up your alley. Just like Orlok, Satorius (founding member of Mountain King) is a riff genius. Every riff on their first 9and currently only) album is fantastic. They are full of rocking, traditional metal glory and it's worth noting that Satorius is worth his salt when it comes to bass guitar work. Basically, Mountain King is a faster Countess. Get Gotos-Antichristus and you won't regret it.

EDIT: Did I mention that I love that guitar in the Mountain King band photo? I do. An inverted cross guitar! It's so over the top that it's brilliant!

Wow Countess has a large discography. Where should I start?
Thanks for your recs ;)

The Shining Swords of Hate is a pretty amazing Countess release, although certainly not for everyone.

Orlok's most recent album (Blazing Flames of War) would be the best place to start overall. however, if you'd like to start with the old stuff, then I'd suggest Ad Maiorem Sathanae Gloriam. My personal favorite Countess album is The Book of the Heretic, though I'd suggest you not start with that particular album. It's production is quite a bit lower than the rest of the Countess discography.

Hello all, I have been listening to many black metal bands over the years, but lately I have been getting bored of it...
I am trying to rediscover black metal as a whole genre as it was when I was first discovering it.
Bands like Immortal, Mayhem, Fleurety, Gorgoroth, Beherit, etc. make my head bang but...I need something else, pure black metal with machine gun drums, 6 strings chords, blasting bass and raspy tortured guttural vocals.I know any black metal band fits in that description, but I am looking for something new, like 2003 and so on...newer stuff of new guys.
Thanks

A genre consisting of bands as different as Summoning and Leviathan. I'm not saying this for no reason you know, you have to help us help you. What type of Ambient/Atmospheric bands do you already know and like?

I'm looking for something like either Through Your Silence, Septicflesh, The Faceless, Belphegor

Or more melodic/symphonic stuff like Quo Vadis, Amon Amarth, and Riul Doamnei

I'm going to assume that the "/" stands for "and", rather than "or", so this means it is quite a reasonable request, since not many bands (in my opinion) are able to effectively mix ambient with black metal. So Summoning wouldn't really count as ambient.

I'd say Leviathan is the best example. The releases I own (The Tenth Sublevel of Suicide, Tentacles of Whorror, Howl Mockery at the Cross, Mass Conspiracy Against all Life) have ambient music cleverly fused with black metal, so that it enhances and contributes to the music, rather than just being there to break up the songs.

Salvation by Funeral Mist is another album I would wholeheartedly recommend. The ambient parts just make the songs more evil, and although they often do serve the purpose of intro/outro, they are also fused thoughtfully with the black metal parts.

I've also just started listening to Darkspace (their second album) and it might suit you as well. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can recommend some more albums along these lines, because it's a style of black metal that I would like to explore more myself. Paysage D'Hiver is another band that someone recommended in more detail a little earlier in the thread.

That's understandable, but it doesn't take more than a quick look at the band's page on this very site to find out. Anyways, I'm afraid I can't really give very good recommendations on this one. If you don't already know Behemoth, you'll probably like them if you like Belphegor. 1349 sounds a bit alike, although their style is faster and more black metal. Riul Doamnei plays symphonic black metal, so try looking for other bands playing the same genre.

I am pretty sure that someone must have posted this question before, but I didnt have time to view all the 90+ pages.

I am looking for Industrial Black Metal that incorporates actual elements (trance-ish synth, heavy synth use in general) found under the umbrella term Industrial (EBM, Aggrotech). I am not looking for bands in the Aborym/Abigor vein. I am aware that this really isnt real or true Black Metal that i am asking for, but you get the idea. The closest I have found thus far would be ...And Oceans "Cypher".

Try Thorns. Even though I think that project is a tad overrated but Blackthorn is a good guitarist and Satyr does well with the vocals.

Try maybe the canadian cult band Blasphemy. They are a old band and back then they was most likely the rawest and fastest band in the undergound (compared to newer bands they still whoop the ass of most bands in speed and rawness!!) so get into them or for newer stuff check maybe one of the 100000 blasphemy/beherit clones

Looking for black metal similar to Blood Of Kingu. Needless to mention those related Ukrainian bands, I know them, and they're not really what I'm looking for anyway (Hate Forest is almost there). What I want is dark, hopeless and extremely atmospheric black metal with fast tempos and extensive use of blastbeats. Yet, the music should have that vivid, emotional, almost depressive feeling to it. With this request I place some value on production values, but if there's nothing very well produced, I don't mind.

Darkspace comes rather close, by the way, and if you took all the suicidal stuff away from Shining's first full-length, that might be pretty close too.

The black metal "top albums" thread has apparently been deleted.

I am looking for thrashier black metal. There isn't a whole lot in the genre I like, but I am finally warming up to "In the Sign of the Black Mark" so there is room for expansion. Please, nothing with completely garbled production (I know In the Sign of the Black Mark's production isn't wonderful but I can tell what Quorthon is saying), nothing with keyboards or nothing 'atmospheric'.

I just got into listening to Melodic Black metal, so I was wondering if you guys could help me. Can someone recommend me something that sounds like Catamenia or Aeveron?

Try Forefather (uk) fantastic band, saxon black metal (with a hint of folk) with great melodies (they are not labelled as melodic black though) should be just what you are looking for especially their latested album "Steadfast", also Cryptic Wintermoon (ger), very underrated, Suidakra (ger) fantastic band, I havent herd their new album yet but it is getting rave reviews so far, the early stuff like the "The Arcanum" are full of great melodies.

I'm searching for any Greenlandic black metal band. That seems like a region that might have inspired at least one Viking/black metal band despite the low population of the territory.
