This topic has been discussed a ton of times, but I'll try to make my question less vague than others. I'm looking for some ambient, post-rock inspired black metal similar to Wolves in the Throne Room. I don't like most bands compared to them, like Burzum, Velvet Cacoon, and Weakling. Preferably bands whose lyrical themes touch on nature and Norse mythology.

Other additional bands I like that don't necessarily relate include Immortal, Nagelfar, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Sigur Ros, and Explosions in the Sky.

Fen is perfect for you.

What do people even profess to like that Fullmoon demo? It's amazingly terrible.

2nd Fen (uk), their debut ablum has just been released and should be just what you are looking for, also try Agalloch if you have not already listened to them, they might also interest you, great band.

Vietah's debut album "Zorny Maroz" is heavily influenced by the "Hvis & Filosefem" period in Burzum's life, def worth a spin or two, with a good clean production/sound.

Fen is definitely worth a try. It's similar in terms of atmosphere (rather similar to Agalloch, though considerably more black metal, in a Bergtatt sort of way at least).

Wolves claim not to be influenced by post-rock, and claim not to even know of such genre. Agalloch, while not black, openly admits being strongly influenced by post-rock. Ashes Against The Grain, in particular.

Post-rock and black metal, despite being rather similar genres, are rarely fully in fusion. Stuff gets labeled as black metal/post-rock, but there isn't that much black metal that actually displays such an influence.

Could I get some recommendations on black metal of a progressive/symphonic nature? (It doesn't matter if it's "really" black metal) or not. Basically, stuff along the line of Borknagar's "Quintessence" and "Empiricism", or Arcturus' "Aspera Hims Symfonia." So far I've found a few along this line such as Vesania and Diabolical Masquerade.

Also, it'd be nice if they had a more "mystical" or "ominous" nature (think the first three I mentioned) rather than being monotonous or depressing.

Thanks!

Fen: IS FANTASTIC PLEASE GET MALEDICTION FIELDS AND ANCIENT SORROW.
Agalloch: My favorite band. purchase or perish. Ashes Against the Grain you will like the most. But the Mantle is absurdly good.
Caïna: Also from the UK, super ridiculously awesome. Their full length Temporary Antennae is what you want.
Frail: Get Brilliant Darkness, that album is pretty disgustingly nasty, especially the first song - Bleeding the Sea
Altar Of Plagues: Get Sol, literally, the first time i heard it, i thought it was a long lost Fen recording, while a bit more "metal" than fen, its still super post rock influenced, in the wolves in the throne room way.
Amesoeurs: Of course, the poster boy, grab their EP, its absolutely worth it.
Lantlôs: Grab the album Lantlôs, very similar to Fen on Ancient Sorrow.
October Falls: Womb of Primordial Nature, not especially what you are looking for, but i think you would really dig it.

I hear several people call progressive black metal an oxymoron. Could someone please explain this to me? Also, what is a blast beat? lol...

Starting at 8 seconds in, that's a blast beat.

I don't know who said that, but I highly doubt that anyone on this site would make that claim, particularly when a black metal band as important as Enslaved is listed on this site as both progressive and black metal. Were you given any reason why they were paradoxical?

Bananaboy wrote:

A blast beat is when a drummer plays sixteenth notes for a prolonged period at a very fast pace, according to this Wikipedia article. It's probably as good a definition as any. It's a bit hard to define, though, because there are many different styles used by different drummers. I think it's better to just get an idea of the technique from the music itself; in black metal, bands like Dark Funeral and Aborym use a lot of blast beats, for example.

Well, what I've heard of it so far (samples and stuff) sounds good. Their earlier one (with the 4 15-minute tracks) also sounds good. On that note, are there any other CDs of that nature? Basically, just a couple really long tracks with an overarching theme. Anything that focused a bit more on the metal than the ambient side (Moonsorrow' Verisakeet or Haviettety are perfect examples) would be nice.

I'm new to black metal, and as of right now I can really only enjoy stuff with clean production/sound. I know there is a lot of out there with purposely sub-par production that is really good, but as of right now I have trouble enjoying anything with crappy production.

Can I get some recs on some BM (preferably not symphonic, I'm looking for straight-up BM) that has clean production? Right now I've only heard Immortal's 2 most recent albums, and I like those a lot, but I'm having trouble finding other stuff with a similar production quality.

Marduk - Rom 5:12 or Plague Angel.
Ofermod - Tiamtü.
Dark Funeral - Attera totus sanctus.
Watain - Sworn to the dark.
Satyricon - The Age of Nero.
The production on these albums isn't bad in my opinion.

Can someone (an Immortal fan) tell me which Immortal albums are great and a worth listening?
I've listened to "Sons of Nothern Darkness" and some songs from Damned in Black, Pure Holocaust.
