I must say, that entire paragraph screams october falls.

October Falls - Shores of Fire
October Falls - Womb of Primordial Nature

all of their other albums are pure folk.

I recommend Scotland's Askival. Folk black metal in a similar vein to Drudkh and Nokturnal Mortum, in a sense. Very interesting band, unique even. Going to give them a review for the challenge ... Which starts tomorrow! :D

@WrathOfVishnu:
I highly recommend you Windir's Arntor and 1184. Both albums have strong folk elements, with the second one heading more to brutal vocals.
Also, give a shot to Isengard's Horizons, Høstmørke. Fenriz going crazy.. Not that many brutal vocals, but still a rec that probably will fulfill your request.

: )

What exactly is the "magic" that black metal provides? why is it so special compared to other genre's?

Anyway, I was never that much into BM other then Burzum I guess. Where should I start to get into the genre? I like Blut Aus Nord, Burzum, and Summoning.

I thought The Work Which Transforms God was awesome.

I've scoured this forum for recommendations however I could not find any, so I decided to ask.

I'm looking for Black Metal in the vein of Xasthur. I bought one of his albums, and was completely enthralled by his originality and emotion he could instill in the listener. Before you start racking your brain on a competent answer, I hate over-produced BM. I like little production in my BM taste, such as Mutiilation, and Burzum and Xasthur have almost too much. I guess what I'm looking for is Depressive in nature, however nothing really on the Doom side of the house where artists like Nortt kick a bass drum every once and awhile.

Thanks.

Silencer (Swe), ColdWorld, Shining (Swe), Forgotten Tomb, Peste Noire and Nargaroth.
Unfortunately I don't know many depressive black metal bands.

Hi,
i've been listening to Black Metal for a number of years now and only just come across the bands Peste Noir and Celestia. I'd never bothered to check them out before, but now i have some of their albums i can't get enough!

The mix of melody into the BM, whilst maintaining a raw and harsh edge is probably what i enjoy most, but they also just write some damn good songs with some catchy riffs whilst keeping it black metal.

So... can anyone recommend me any more bands that i should check out that are similar to Peste Noir and Celestia. I do scour these forums all the time for new stuff, but sometimes a good old recommendation just does the trick ;)
thanks in advance.

Is Varathron's His Majesty at the Swamp too obvious?

Black Metal is special because, for the most part, it has that atmosphere going for it which is hard to describe. It just doesn't exist in any other type of metal.

If you like those bands, here are a few others you may like:
-Walknut, with their only album Graveforests and their Shadows, produce a type of extremely atmospheric and epic monstrous black metal which anyone with good taste will absolutely love.
-Drudkh, their discography is riddled with atmospheric, nature-evoking black metal of the best kind.
-Gris, from Canada, is a band of amazing depressive black metal which never ceases to amaze me. Il Était une Forêt is highly recommended.

Hail (of Finland) always sounded to me like a crossing of Varathron (an early greek bm act very similar to, but a bit slower than, Rotting Christ) and early death/doom metal.

Also, Legacies Unchain might fit too.

Either All The Witches Dance or the Into The Drape EP. Hell, anywhere but Mortuary Drape's latest album (a the hard piece for suck) would be a good place to start.

I'm looking for something along the lines of Pestilential Shadow's Embrace After Death. More importantly/specifically, the songs The Fate Of All That Lives and Haunting Gallows. Extremely minimal, low-fi, and dreadfully melancholic. I've yet to give their newest entry a listen, Cursed, because of the 180 they've done in terms of production and direction.

Listening to the passages on The Fate Of All That Lives between 4:00 and 4:45 and Haunting Gallow's between 5:05 and 7:20 are just amazing. Anything that resonates that atmosphere or tone would be wonderful.

I'm looking for black metal similiar to Mayhem's Deathcrush (whole album, not just the song). Specifically I am looking for the slightly amateurish use of instruments (not that it should be completely horrible musicianship, I am still looking for good riffs) and a very headbangable quality (see Necrolust). As for vocals, I am a big fan of that really demented sound Maniac had on that album, but really any style will do as long as it is well preformed. Production wise I am looking for a pretty raw sound, but I am definetly not too picky in this area.

Also, I'm looking for stuff that is available on either cassette or CD only, as I do not currently own a working record player. It would also be nice if it is something that isn't limited to 10 copies or something so I can actually afford it. Thanks!

Both of you ought to try out Gehenna's "First Spell" EP: black metal with organs and a spooky sound. Another short-format release you may enjoy would be Mortuary Drape's "Into the Drape," or just as well, "Mourn Path."

I would love any recommendations of sick, twisted black metal with prominent industrial/dark ambient/noise elements and with lyrical/aesthetical themes like urban decay, industry, filth, metaphysics, horror or just abstract things in general. Something in the vein of The Axis Of Perdition, Spektr, Blut Aus Nord, La Division Mentale, Blacklodge and Neo Inferno 262.

For industrial black metal, I recommend you to read Crick/Kronetong's journals.
The Path To Musical Evolution 1.1.4: Industrial Black Metal Pt. I
The Path To Musical Evolution 1.1.4: Industrial Black Metal Pt. II

For bm mixed with noise/dark ambient, check Alpha Drone's Self-Titled. You can listen to his album for free on Last.fm.

Another good bm/noise band is Wold. I recommend you the album L.O.T.M.P.

This band aren't exactly like those, but the catchiest black metal album I've ever heard has to be IXXI's 'Assorted Armament'. Seriously, its fucking good. Heavy guitars with a distinctively catchy style.

Another other style of BM (as long as it's not DSBM) is welcome. I'd like to get specific albums, if possible. Thanks.

I'm assuming you simply forgot to mention Lunar Aurora, if not, definitely check them out.

If you're into pagan black metal but more of the original Norwegian blend of it (i.e. Kampfar/Mock, Hades, Enslaved), you'll most likely enjoy Helrunar, Horn, and Drautran. While none of them are really excellent or anything, they all provide some good, solid music.

Leraje are also quite good, but their stuff will be tough to find, though you may still be able to buy it from the band member on here. Can't remember what his username is.

i was the member of leraje ;-)

God, black metal is so hard to get into. I just don't like Darkthrone's ABITNS or Emperor's ITNSE. I loved Burzum's Hlidskjalf, and Summoning's albums. I couldn't really get into Burzum's other albums except for Filosofem. It seems as if a lot of the songs on their first album sounded the same.

Drudkh and Wolves In The Throne Room are great though.

While without the dark beauty of Dissection, Catamenia's music is dark, melodic and extreme and with a certain type of catchiness in it. I recommend the newer albums like Chaos Born. While not a copy of Dissection by any means, I think those are some of the qualities Dissection is most often praised for.

Maybe Vinterland? I think it's rather similar to the bands you mentioned and Dissection.

Try some of the more accessible stuff first, off the top of my head I would go for Windir (highly rec), Catamenia, Sear Bliss, Cryptic Wintermoon, Dissection . If you like Summoning try Elffor or Kinstrife and Blood. Horn (GER) are very underatted and overlooked a fantastic band full of melody. There are that many types of black metal out their its hard to know were to start! Also, AX are very like Drudkh.

Anyone know any black metal that has a really melancholic and disheartening feel, BUT that mixes it up with aggressive parts full of hatred. A good example of this would be Verloren. They sometimes just rock away with at times a little more aggressive parts and then all of a suddenly come to a halt and play the typical slow, repetitive black metal full of despair. Love's Burial Ground by Forgotten Tomb also matches what im looking for.

Anyone know any black metal that has a really melancholic and disheartening feel, BUT that mixes it up with aggressive parts full of hatred. A good example of this would be Verloren. Dödfödd comes to mind immediately. Check out the "Besvärjelse För Omvänd Rekreation" demo, and especially the song "En Obotlig Passion För Att Blöda (Del 2)". Give it a try, I can almost guarantee that you won't be disappointed. That song has some of the greatest riffs in black metal history.
