While without the dark beauty of Dissection, Catamenia's music is dark, melodic and extreme and with a certain type of catchiness in it. I recommend the newer albums like Chaos Born. While not a copy of Dissection by any means, I think those are some of the qualities Dissection is most often praised for.

Maybe Vinterland? I think it's rather similar to the bands you mentioned and Dissection.

Ok cool. I already listen to Catamenia, but I will check out Vinterland.

Thanks guys.

Im looking for some brutal/bestial but sophisticated blacked death metal in the vein of Axis of Advance, Rites of Thy Degringolade, Sacamentry Abolisment, Oroubous (can), Tietanblood, Mitochodrion, Bregrime Eximous, Weapon (can), Diocletian, and Order from Chaos.

Can anybody help with a band similar to Ne Obliviscaris?

Very progressive, catchy, bassy black metal with long songs and some great solos. And I am loving the violin usage and the death/doom like vocals variating with the black metal vocals.

Seriously, this is some great music. I want some more music similar to this band and their one demo!

Any help is appreciated :)

Anything from Anaal Nathrakh or Axis of Perdition.

I personally also enjoy Black 'N Roll - bands like Craft, Heresi, Vreid, Horna.

And I think some of Judas Iscariot's middle period albums were very influenced by the Doors. Yeah, the Doors! - some of the rhythms were very much like 12/8 slow blues, with weird, almost improvised dark poetry.

Yeah, I also second those two.

But what?!?
The Doors? That's my favourite band of all time, and Judas Iscariot is not too far behind.. but I don't hear any Door-esque in JI.

Any examples?

Anything similar to Burzum's Hlidskjalf?(The entire album). I love this album a lot. Awesome dark ambience.

Not exactly what you want but good stuff anyway:

Apotheosis - Farthest from the Sun
Trimonium - Son of a Blizzard

Closer to what you want:

Abyssos - Fhinsthanian Nightbreed
Forefather - Deep into Time

Okay, I want some GOOD Symphonic Black Metal and Melodic Black Metal. I haven't found very many that I do like, but I enjoyed Chthonic and Fairytale Abuse quite a bit. And please, nothing like Limbonic Art.

The closest thing I can think of is Enslavement of Beauty, especially with the song The Perilous Pursuit of Volition.

The first two band coming in mind are Sear Bliss and Bornholm from Hungary. Bishop of Hexen will satisfy you, too. In the same vein is Asgaroth's Trapped in the Depths of Eve..., so you'd better give it a shot. I hope you enjoy : )

Well, they are actually quite good but it was nothing near Fanisk.. Maybe because fanisk use lots of tremolo picking in that song...

I suppose you mean songs that use predominantly major chords.

Try this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7PLhhb0Mls

and the last two minutes of this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yo01ZLrv3vk

also, this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lMZlpFUpyg

and the last 4 minutes of this(DON'T MISS IT!):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2cn2WpR9h4

and the intro riff from this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v26pkIEjj8g

oh, and also this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPz6cj6gJ8s

I'll update if more songs come to mind.

Oh, I forgot one. You seem not to appreciate NSBM, and neither do I, but try to focus on the music and disregard the lyrical content. This song is fantastic, and everything from 2:37 onwards is really major key and epic.

Try out Dorotha, they have some great symphonic parts but also a very good melodic-ish black metal band.

Abyssos is another black metal band that's pretty heavy on the melodic influences. Great production, some badass riffing, and at times, some awesome solos.

Ever heard of Night Conquers Day? Try them out for GOOD symphonic black metal.

Can anyone suggest BM musically similar to Burzum but with better production?

Suggestions for good BM with non-shitty production are also welcome, regardless of style.

No, in fact i ve heard very little BM actually. But from whatever i ve been exposed to, i ve developed a dislike for the usual BM production and almost all of the Trve norwegian bands except Burzum.

Thanx for the rec. no i dont have any issues with the good old norwegians, its just that these bands are IMO wrongly considered the best of the genre and i never understood the point of having such shitty production. I guess it isnt true, if it doesnt hurt to hear it.

yeah I totally agree.. I mean, what's the point of listening to music, if you can't listen to the riffs, drums, vocals and bass lines due to bad production. But anyway, I think bad production is a cliche in BM, and it's the same as cheesy epic themes of Power Metal. You either love it or hate it..

If you want to listen to good riffs, solos and vocals, then you should listen to hellenic blackmetal. Norwegian won't offer what you're looking for. But what I believe is that, the bands in Norway back in late '80s hadn't enough money to make clear and good-produced music. Because none had heard a genre similar to this, coming from Norway, everybody liked it. Thus, untill now, the way music was made back then, is considered as way for success and as a strong worship to their "leaders".
But blackmetal is an enormous genre, so you can find whatever you want :)

yeah, but one of the reasons Black Metal is so vast as you said, it's beacause most of the bands nowadays think that with a shitty amp and production, and screaming vocals they can become the next Darkthrone and make money...

Easy question. Seance. I got started with this album and discovered their whole discography with pleasure. First Tales from Eternal Dusk, then Stab Wounds, etc. Also, their last full-length, Eidolon is really good. One of my favourite german bands.

In regards to melodic black metal, with some symphonic elements, I suggest you check out Sigrblot - Weltenfeind (split with Absurd and GBK) and Kataxu - Hunger of Elements. If you are already familiar with Sigrblot's album I still recommend the split as the material is far more developed and easily outdoes their full length.

Edit: check out the first track. www.myspace.com/sigrblotofficial

I'm looking for some emotionally intense black metal. As a reference, the last 3 minutes or so of Krallice's "Wretched Wisdom" is something I consider to be intense. Wolves in the Throne Room have a lot of these moments as well. I'm not necessarily looking for sound-a-likes of these bands, I was just using those as a reference. Also, production/language doesn't matter, but preferably something I could find on Google before I purchase. Thanks!

How is black metal suppose to have an atmosphere at all? The only Burzum albums that seem to have any atmosphere for me is Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, Hlidskjalf and Filosofem. The others have no atmosphere at all, and just seem like fast drumming and tremolo picking.

I don't even like DarkThrone, I don't care to hear boring riffs with high shrieked vocals and fast drumming if it doesn't give off an atmosphere at all. How much Black Metal does give off an atmosphere anyway?

Yet I can def. feel the melancholic mood that Agalloch gives off, and the pure darkness of Blut Aus Nord's 'The Work Which Transforms God'.

I'm beginning to give up on black metal and just turn to Dark Ambient.

It doesn't sound like you've heard that much black metal, Misty_Lake, so don't give up just yet. I recommend that you check out Paysage d'Hiver, Enslaved's early work, Ulver, and Deathspell Omega based on the stuff you've liked.

Paysage d'Hiver is very well-done black metal (and one ambient demo) in the tradition of second-wave black metal; it's clearly influenced by Burzum. My favorite black metal demo Wintherr's released under this name is the self-titled.

Enslaved's early work is also very well-done. Hordanes Land, Vikingligr Veldi and Eld are the most atmospheric in my opinion. The atmosphere is a bit more 'viking' than most second-wave black metal but I'm sure you'll feel it.

Ulver's first three albums are among the greatest black metal albums ever released and, in a somewhat raw way, the most atmospheric. While their early material was raw, Ulver always demonstrated an emphasis of musicianship that was intentionally avoided by bands like Darkthrone. You might find that Ulver is more 'your style.'

Finally, if you like Blut aus Nord's The Work Which Transforms God, you have to hear Deathspell Omega's Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice. It's similar in tempo, progression as a concept album and in its development of a powerfully evil atmosphere. I really can't recommend it enough.

I'm just getting into Dark Fortress, which album should I start with?

Easy question. Seance. I got started with this album and discovered their whole discography with pleasure. First Tales from Eternal Dusk, then Stab Wounds, etc. Also, their last full-length, Eidolon is really good. One of my favourite german bands.

I totally agree! Dark Fortress is a fantastic band!
