Hmm, maybe you should give WOODS OF YPRES a try. Especially "Pursuit of the Sun & Allure of the Earth" combines accoustic passages with BM/DM in a really great maner (imho...). Their latest full length "Woods III: The Deepest Roots and Darkest Blues" is also very good but has more clean vocals on it....

Hello, I'm looking for some DSBM in the vein of these three songs:
-Conjuration of Terror-Xasthur
-Exitus Litalis-Nyktalgia
-Il Etait un Foret-Gris

These are some of my favorite songs- dark, emotional, and thought-provoking. Could anyone rec some bands/songs with a similar sound?

I've been enjoying Forgotten Tomb - Springtime Depression, and Make a Change...Kill Yourself s/t. Also, Krohm seems to hit the spot, despite not strictly being depressive black metal.

Just dropping in on this conversation to say I enjoy all three bands, though Lustre a lot more ambient than ColdWorld, in my eyes. Zuriaake are really a joy though. Even the bonus material was amazing and I usually expect bonus songs to be sub standard. China/Eastern Asia has a fair few good bands. People should really try Kanashimi. ;)

I agree Perplexed, Lustre is quite a bit more ambient than ColdWorld. And indeed, Zuriaake's Afterimage of Autumn is fantastic. I really need to check out more East Asian black metal. I have a few random albums, like those of Varuna and Midwinter, which both far-exceeded my expectations. Be Persecuted and Dark Fount are also great. I tried Heartless, but can't get over the vocals . Anyway, I'll be checking out more, including Kanashimi, as soon as I'm done exploring Hypothermia and Trist. :)

East Asia has a few surprises. The surrounding area isn't bad either. I really like Meza Virs from Singapore, though I'm not normally a fan of black/death hybrids, let alone symphonic one's. The enigmatic Gnome are one to look out for, too. I especially liked Varuna. I never expect obscure regions (in terms of black metal) to house experimental bands like that. Be Persecuted were one of the first discoveries I made from Asia ... New album is coming out sometime this year as well. Really excited about that.

Have you only just discovered Hypothermia and Trist? I assume not. 'Zrcadlení Melancholie' is truly amazing.

For Asian BM I'd reccomend Frozen Moon and Ritual Day from China. Ritual Day is especially good they're melodic but are still pretty fierce and best of all THEY'RE NOT KEYBOARD DRIVEN!!! as far as melodic BM goes i see way too many band that are synth powered. (I apologize if these bands aren't what you're looking for)

Now I'd like to make a few regional requests of my own.

I'm currently looking for some good Slavic Black Metal in the vein of Temnozor, Kroda, Raven Dark, and Drudkh. I don't mind if there are flutes or NS ideology in the music, i'm just looking for that "Russian BM" sound if that helps.

I'd also like to know some more Greek bands with that chunky riff based sound like early Rotting Christ and Varathron. thanks :)

Some good bands there guys, have been going through them myself lately, and agree it is a region that is producing some great music that has yet to be discovered by many. Pest Productions seems like a good label to keep an eye. Another promising sounding band on the label are Hinsidig (NOR/GER), their debut album has also just been released, have a lot of listening to do!

Edit to above - On the subject of Lustre guys, I noticed on their myspace a track or two, especially "Echoes OF Transcendence" (this is excellent piece of ambient!), are not listed on any of their releases on the archives, do you know if the band have a previous demo release out as I would like to get a hold of this track(s), thanks in advance.

Alright so after using the advanced search option and coming up with nothing I am now coming here.

I am looking for black metal with a heavy influence of NWOBHM. I already know of venom, but I want more of a typical black metal sound with awesome rocking NWOBHM-style solos. Vocal style can go either way. Anything you got will help. Thanks.

I like it already, on another note why is it that when you click on the last page of this thread it says "no posts exist for this topic"

Listening to Enthroneds' album Regie Sathanas was refreshing. Epic and melodic, as well as being RIFF-based aggressive black/heavy metal. I've been a bit short on discovering bands like this lately.

Other albums that sound fitting to the above description..

Kampfar - Kampfar
Ragnarok - Arising Realm
Svartahrid - As The Sunrise Flickers
Svartahrid - Malicious Pride
Summoning - Lugburz
Skyforger - Semigalls Warchant

It was an error that happened a while ago where some long threads would miscalculate the number of pages. Don't worry about it; you're not missing anything, as new posts appear on the second-to-last page instead. Some threads don't always have the error, but develop it when the current page gets to a certain number of posts (I think).

You might also enjoy Mgła from Poland. Their entire discography is amazing, but for this I'd say you should start with something from their demo/EP period, seems to focus more on the melodic style that Forest of Fog do. Presence or Mdłości should suit you. Fantastic band.

Hi. Im looking for some black metal I haven't heard before, not anything that has a a specific sort of sound. My favourite BM bands are Dark Fortress, Mayhem, Emperor, Behexen, Xasthur (except the shitty new album), Anaal Nathrakh, Sigh (is this Black metal?), Drudkh, Wyrd, Darkthrone and Belphegor, gorgoroth, and some more I'm forgetting atm

Just reccomend anything you think is good, whether well known, or kvlt bands that 3 people have heard of. I like raw and minimal to an extent, but don't reccomend anything that sounds like the second half of Dawn of the black hearts. I don't mind raw ad long as I can actually hear the music.

Thanks in advance.

Not counting some bands you already named (very nice taste you have in black metal, by the way), these are some of my favorites, in no particular order. Hope you find something you like here...

Lunar Aurora- Extremely atmospheric black metal from Germany. Their last album, "Andacht", is one of my all-time favorites.

Sad Legend- Incredibly powerful black metal from South Korea. Their first album and the "Searching for the Hope in Utter Darkness" EP are some of the best black metal ever created, IMO.

Wodensthrone- Excellent atmospheric pagan black metal that's somewhat like an Anglo-Saxon version of Drudkh or Negura Bunget.

Paysage d'Hiver- Raw ambient black metal (sometimes just plain ambient) with a very powerful wintery atmosphere.

Primordial- Very epic, powerful pagan black metal with a strong folk element. Their most recent album, "To the Nameless Dead", is a classic. Probably not quite classifiable as black metal these days, though.

Urfaust- Very strange but consistently excellent band. Changes their style frequently and dramatically, but never sounds like anyone else- the first two albums are strange, rather raw melodic/ambient black metal with mostly clean vocals, the "Drei Rituale Jenseits Des Kosmos" EP is very intense, noisy, and apocalyptic-sounding black metal that doesn't sound like anything else I've heard, and I haven't heard the most recent EP yet, but it's supposedly another dramatic change in style.

I'm not a huge black metal guy but I absolutely love this album "Unorthodox Steps of Ritual" by Viking Crown. It's pretty fast, has lots of treble guitar sounds mixed in with normal level, vocals range from high shrieks to deep (but not growled). Plenty of good samples/mixing to mix it up a bit. My favorite song off the album would have to be Asmodeus Rising.

most people hate this record because it is the pantera dude. :durr:

I think it's really good though, and the last track is surely one of the best BM songs from the states.

if anyone's interested, I have a digipack of this for trade/sale as I bought the LP recently.

Lunar Aurora are already a personal favourute, although my favourite album is Ars Morendi by them.

Sad Legend and Wodensthrone. wow, this is some great black metal, I love the organic and natural feel to Wodensthrone, like walking through some of our english forests. I also love the uniqueness of Sad Legend, the male operatic vocals just exemplify the brilliance of the musicianship.

I heard Paysage's split album with Lunar Aurora and wasn' t particularly impressed, would you say that their other releases may persuade me.

I haven't yet heard the other two, but I'm working on it. Thank you for Sad Legend and Wodensthrone, that will satisfy my search for New BM for weeks.

Hello everyone. I knock on thy door with hope..., recently I been listening to Burzum's Hvis Lyset Tar Oss and let me tell you- I am damn impressed the way Varg has compiled all the riffs with the atmosphere is nothing short of cunning brilliance. Every track has a different feel to it (not saying this with the MA reviews here) Raw production, Solitude, longing, restlessness, dark, death everything!! Anyway, the nature of my post is; I'd like to explore more BM bands which have the same/similar sound (not a clone) like 'Hvis Lyset Tar Oss'. I hope you all know what I am looking for... Same fundamentals but with individual perspective and approach. Also, can anyone explain me the terms 'Ambient', 'Dark Metal', Atmospheric...? and the major difference/similarities amongst these...

Thanks!

Thanks!

To me Hvis Lyset Tar Oss is very atmospheric, I would recommend to check out the most common names in atmospheric black metal if you haven't already: ColdWorld, Lunar Aurora, Lurker of Chalice, Drudkh etc.

I'm horrible at describing genres so I won't go there :p

looking up most common names under atmospheric BM would bring up a huge list; now my dilemma would be which of these are good (album wise) or scan through their individual reviews. Now, I would like to listen the stuff that you guys already have and would consider... lets say... a very solid atmospheric/ambient album/band. I would most certainly go through the bands that you have suggested for sure... any albums in particular??? And regarding the genre desciption; please don't sweat it! :)

I'm already familiar with the genre, but I'm a huge fan of vocalists who sound like they've cracked and gone demented. My favorite of these are Famine/Neige from PN/Mortifera and that guy from Enochian Crescent. What other vocalists sound batshit crazy? The more severe the better.

you should check this
www.myspace.com/abysspk ..
the vocals are screechy as fuck

Off the top of the head try Wigrid and Sterbends first albums, Forest Silence's "A Philosphy Of Winter" , Horn (GER), Zuriaake, Lustre, Evilfeast, Blutklinge. All these bands are quality and can create great atmosphere's with ambient touches, I highly rec them all so just start checking them out in order. And as already mentioned def Coldworld.

I'll this one out:

Sort Vokter is Ildjarn's side project which oddly is pure brilliance, its minimalist black metal, with a drum machine that creates a very hypnotic effect rather than being irrating, the guitar riffs are very, very raw and fuzzy, and it has keyboards layered over it with a very clean, super sterile production in it, the entire album is a huge chunk of trance inducing raw bm. Very good stuff, unfortunately they only released one album before splitting up, "Folkloric Necro Metal".
