Hey everyone, I'm looking for black metal bands that use slow drum beats in general. I don't care if the riffing is rather fast, I only want a nice slow beat in my black metal music. I know some Burzum is good for this, but Varg has fast beats as well. Any suggestions?

I'm looking to get into the more depressive/atmospheric side of black metal. Previously, I've been more interested in the more riff driven, faster styles of bm, and I'd like to explore the other side of it. The only bands I'm really aware of that are like this are Xasthur and Weakling, so pretty much any recommendations would help me out.

Thy Light*
Epitemia
Darktrance
Darkknght
Aargh
Anti*
Nyktaglia*
Austere
Trancelike Void
Gris*
Somres Forets*
Coldworld*
Where Sad Spirits Around Me Stroll (instrumental)
Happy Days
Apathia
Abyssic Hate*
Strid*
Brocken Mon*

.....*- better ones there.

For some reason I have shit tons of depressive BM, so if you want more recomendation, I shall impart them unto thee ;) :)

Thanks man, this should keep me busy for a while!

I'm looking for something that has the interesting choice of instruments like Gris, but with the production quality of Make A Change, Kill Yourself. Symphonic DSBM... any suggestions?

I'm looking for punk and rock or shoegaze influenced black metal, something not commercialized and preferably not over-produced. I like amesoeurs, peste noire, and forgotten woods

Might be a left field request, but does anyone know of Black metal strictly influenced with philosophers and philosophy in general? Stuff based off of the works of Locke, Kant, Kafka, Rousseau, Marx, anything of the sort. Thanks, it's appreciated.

You might like Heretoir, a German band who plays shoegaze-influenced black metal. Kind of similar to Amesoeurs and Alcest.

Deathspell Omega's lyrics are heavily influenced by Georges Bataille.

Hey everyone, can you suggest me some nostalgic black metal? I'd like something that sounds lugubrious, surreal and passionate. It shouldn't sound too clean and overproduced, nor should it sounds too crappy. I like black metal records that sound used and old, but still enjoyable. I avoid keyboards, though I'd like some slightly melodic stuff here and there. As for the vocals, I'd like melancholical black metal shrieking, something that's expressing emotions, I don't care if it's grief, hate or whatever, I just need to feel it. Got any ideas?

I don't know if you've looked into the Finnish scene at all, but there are a fair number of bands who take the cold, northern sound and inject a tasteful amount of melody. The closest to what you're looking for that I can come up with would be Carelian Satanist Madness by Satanic Warmaster. You should definitely look into Horna and Sargeist as well, though.

Hey, good recommendations, thanks. I love the Finnish death metal scene, so I figured I'd order some black metal from there based on your recommendations and so I did. I got Carelian Satanist Madness and Sotahuuto by Horna, both of which were very good.

If you have any other suggestions, please post them =).

Looking for black metal especially similar to Drudkh's "Forgotten Legends". I really love the lengthy songs, dry sounding vocals, constant tempos, and the thick sounding production (never a time with no sound, very full sounding).

Looking for black metal that focuses around World War I/II or just war itself. Lots of imagery is a must. Similar in aggression and theme to early Endstille and also to Operation Winter Mist, if only a lot of their music didn't suck. Loits are another one who use the imagery and theme very well but aren't really that focused to any one particular sound. Doesn't necessarily have to be blast-heavy or terribly aggressive but it helps; it's more the subject matter and overall presentation I'm after.

Can anyone recommend me Black thrash, black death metal bands in the vein of Gospel of the Horns,Infernal Execrator ,Gravehill ,Darkest Hate Warfront,Nocturnal Graves,Bestial Warlust,Infernal War,Katharsis?

P.S.
I have a lot of old stuff like this , but the
new bands appear all the time, so I think there are a lot bands in this style I`m not aware of. Therefore the newer , less known bands are preferable, but the old stuff
(if it has a Bestial Warlust-like sound )is good too.

Thank you

Quick rec.

Can anyone tell me of anything like Lunar Aurora's later work? Nice atmospheric black metal? I know of the obvious atmospheric black metal such as Walknut and such.

Thanks in advance! :)

Anyone know of any Black Metal bands, similar in vein to Covenants - In Times Before the Light, with a looming ominous presence?

I don't mind synthy bands, as long as they don't over shadow the guitars.

Thanks in advance.

Evilfeast (POL) create great atmospheric black metal, music is a bit rawer than LA but def worth a listen, also try Sear Bliss and Forest Silence.

Vesania was my first thought as well. As far as symphonic style bm bands go, they really do a great job.

Dissection are quite close. Their album cover art often features a horse or horse-drawn carriage.

I'm horribly new to black metal, and I've only been exposed to Emperor and Immortal, for the most part. I'd like some recommendations for really good black metal bands to start with, I'm not sure exactly what kind of sound I'm looking for but I'd like to try a bit of everything. Forgive me for the vague phrasing, any recommendation would be great :P

This should get you started:

Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
Darkthrone - Ablaze in the Northern Sky
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark
Behexen - By the Blessing of Satan
Gorgoroth - Pentagram
Graveland - Fire Chariot of Destruction
Horna - Sanojesi Aarelle
Nyktalgia - Nyktalgia
Taake - Bjoergvin...
Samael - Ceremony of Opposites

These are some basics. Once you've listened to these, you should be able to find other stuff on your own.

You can listen first for

Various Artists - Blackend I -III - Black Metal Compilations (6 cds)
(among many other good bm bands these compilations contain music by
Enslaved
Rotting Christ
Enthroned
Dimmu Borgir
Lord Belial
Limbonic Art
Old Man's Child
Satyricon
Impaled Nazarene
Dark Funeral
Moonspell
Bestial Warlust
etc)

That can help you a lot.

p.s. pm me if you want to know of the names of the good bands of the particular sub-category of bm (thrash black , bdm, etc)

Hi everyone. I'm looking for some bands that play in the Black/Heavy sub-genre.
The only two I know are Zemial and I (Abbath's sideproject). Are there any others?
Thanks in advance.

I haven't found anything like it yet, but honestly that album didn't really sound much at all like black metal. The drumming (not just the style, but the production too) seemed like blatant Tool worship (which I don't really have a problem with). The riffing seemed like a slightly heavier Tool, too, even down to the production. Granted there were some tremolo and even thrashy bits here and there and some blasting from time to time, the overall feel from the album I got was a slightly blackened combination of Neurosis and Tool. Heck, even the vocals sounded more like something you'd hear in Neurosis than black metal.

So in other words, the album is great and I'd say definitely unique but I've never heard anything like it. I'm assuming you've heard Eater of Birds? If not, give that a shot, too. It retains a lot more of a thrashy black metal feel but is beginning to show signs of that Neurosis/Tool influence in the riffing and drumming especially.
