Can you suggest me some black metal in the vein of Burzum's "Filosofem"? It's just like the best album ever.

I haven't found anything like it yet, but honestly that album didn't really sound much at all like black metal. The drumming (not just the style, but the production too) seemed like blatant Tool worship (which I don't really have a problem with). The riffing seemed like a slightly heavier Tool, too, even down to the production. Granted there were some tremolo and even thrashy bits here and there and some blasting from time to time, the overall feel from the album I got was a slightly blackened combination of Neurosis and Tool. Heck, even the vocals sounded more like something you'd hear in Neurosis than black metal.

So in other words, the album is great and I'd say definitely unique but I've never heard anything like it. I'm assuming you've heard Eater of Birds? If not, give that a shot, too. It retains a lot more of a thrashy black metal feel but is beginning to show signs of that Neurosis/Tool influence in the riffing and drumming especially.

Yeah I've heard Eater of Birds. And I can't really disagree with your assessment of Gin. I happen to like Tool, Neurosis and black metal.

Thats just it, there no albums which surpass the gloom within Filosofem. However, you could and should look into artists like Funeral Mourning, Coldworld, Nykaglia, ie. DSBM but not to depressive.

^Try Negura Bunget maybe; they are great :) More "tribal" and very pagan; fast but distant blastbeats and great melodies.

What album do you recommend? I tried a few tracks from Om first. The tremolo melodies weren't exactly what I was looking for, and the clean singing put me off a bit. Are the others any different?

You really have to listen to the whole album. Even if it's not what you're looking for, take a listen to the whole album. Let it soak in, you won't regret it.

Bewitched is the only band I can really think of. I believe they are from Sweden. You might look into them.

Great rec. If there is any more stuff out there like this, please suggest it. Shameless Drudkh worship, when well done like this, is a great thing.

Wodensthrone is what I'm looking for. This definitely fits the requirements, thanks. Listening to Heófungtid right now, fucking awesome.

I will. I wasn't saying I didn't enjoy it, it just didn't fit the request.

you could check out front beast and/or devil lee rot although both are a bit different from these 2 you mentioned.

to the other guy who was looking for a filosofem-like record, it's really hard to compare, but you might like beithíoch-aisling dhorcha.

edit: I can't belive it, I really did type david lee roth first. :durr:

This one for starters http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=10613

Then http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=15670

...and then http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=133198

The Inaborat Kosmos EP is good to, but defintely check out OM. It takes a while to sink in, but is well worth it.

I'm looking for bands somewhat similar to later Deathspell Omega. They must be very technical, VERY atmospheric (if it comes down to it -> Atmosphere>Technicality), and abstract (not overly necessary I suppose). Some obvious ones would be most bands signed to NoEvDia, Ved Buens Ende, Blut Aus Nord, Portal, Gorguts, Ulcerate, etc. You don't HAVE to limit yourself to recommending black metal...

Also, does anyone know of any black metal bands (other than Enslaved and In Lingua Mortua) who use Mellotron?

^Manes: http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=226700 is not a bad choice, not overly technical, but atmospheric in a dark way (this is not the pre-Ved Buens Ende Manes, though the two bands did a split).

Lustre - Night Spirit. Imagine the ambient instrumental songs mixed with the black metal songs of 'Filosofem' and that is what Lustre have conjured up in the form of 'Night Spirit'.

Night Spirit is a great release, the new material is sounding very promising also, continuing in the same style, looking forward to this release.
Try Zuriaake (chn) "Afterimage of Autumn", especially the bonus disc, the first track on it "winter mirage" is the closest to dunkelheit I have come across yet, the rest of the album is fantastic to.

I have two requests, both of which are extremely vague (which is why they are being posted here, and not as a new thread). Hopefully the vagueness of these will produce some interesting results.

Firstly, what is the most soul-crushingly depressing black metal album out there? Please, don't just list anything you find slightly sorrowful. I'm looking for the worst of the worst here.

Told you it was vague. And even more so, what is the most ambient "ambient black metal" band/album you can think of.

As always, thanks in advance.

I have two recommendations, one I made recently ... Lustre - Night Spirit. Very good ambient black metal project in the vein of Burzum and perhaps even Velvet Cacoon. Lots of ambiance.

Also, Lurker of Chalice are by far one of the best ambient black metal bands around.

Whoah, thanks for the quick reply lol. Quick question about Lurker of Chalice. Is the material on the demos the same as on the full length? Or is it different stuff altogether?

It's similar, though the demos can be a lot more ambient than the full-length. Having said that, you'd be wise to go with the self-titled full-length. It's utterly brilliant, much better than Wrest's other project - Leviathan.

For me prob the best ambient black metal release is Paysage D'Hiver's "Die Festung", this is an entirely keyboard album unlike the rest of their releases, but the winter atmosphere is second to none, a fantastic listen which matches the cover perfectly, the rest of the albums are full of ambience also but with guitars and drums, but for me dont have the same atmosphere as Die Festing. Other great artists that you might enjoy would be Darkspace, Lunar Aurora, Evilfeast, Forest Silence. All these bands have great ambience pieces throughtout their releases.

Not as much into the depressive scene, but it would be hard to go past the early Xasthur or Leviathan material, those are dark releases.

Check out ColdWorld and Darkspace as well. They're absolutely awesome ambient black metal bands that both released some of the best albums of last year. Another good one is Axis of Perdition but only their later stuff is ambient. It's very very dark, scary stuff.

Oh, and bumped...

I'm not really familiar with DSO, but I'd recommend Kathaarsys from Spain. A progressive black metal band with wide ranging influences. Quite technical, definitely atmospheric and abstract. Very good band who're sadly overlooked.

Epic Pagan Times.

Cool to see someone else who knows of these guys. Their following two releases were a step down in quality, but their debut album is about as good as progressive black metal comes. It's almost baffling why Portrait of Mind and Sorrow doesn't get more attention.

When I was getting interested in black metal, these are some of the albums I was recommended that I really enjoyed:

Deathspell Omega - Si Monvmentvm Reqvires, Circvmspice
Glorior Belli - Manifesting the Raging Beast
Ulver - Bergtatt and Nattens Madrigal
Summoning - Stronghold

Also, I'd like to recommend Mgla (Groza, Mdlosci/Further Down The Nest), Kriegsmaschine (Altered States of Divinity), Funeral Mist, (Maranatha, Salvation), Gehenna (First Spell), Immortal (Pretty much everything),

I've heard of them but never pursued any interest in them. I'll look into them more closely. I always get them mixed up with Katharsis (Ger) hahaha... And their name (SP) is more the way the German Katharsis would spell it!

Can anyone recommend me some good melodic black metal? I know most black metal is melodic already but I want some real meloblack if you know what I mean. So far the only good example I can give is Istapp, maybe also Sorhin to some extent.

Try maybe Cryptic Wintermoon or Forest Of Fog, both have some great melodies throught there releases. For Ruin (ireland) have just released a new one up for free download via there website, have not got to listen to it yet but it is getting very positive reviews. Def check out Catamenia, prob the best place to begin tbh. Sacramentum "far away from the sun" is an awesome album, highy rec. Also try Sad Legend. These should start you on the right path.

Just a general reccomendation:

Anyone who is interested in modern, cleanly produced, but ultimately crushing, diverse black metal with a dissonant sense of melody should check out Vladimir Cochet's most recent release, Unholy Matrimony - Croire, Decroitre. I can't believe how little attention this release has been getting, as Cochet's true talents are here; every song has something different to offer, while the album feels cohesive all the very same; malignant, hateful, and chaotic atmosphere. One of the best balanced and solid BM releases this year.

That should be Wedard. Start with "Ein Leben in der Ewigkeit" or "Einsamer Winterweg", not with the latest one.
