This is probably a very common question in this thread but I'm looking for some depressive black metal. I know of Shining and Xasthur and will be looking into Wedard and Leviathan as soon as possible so right now I'm just looking for depressive black metal along the lines of Shining and Xasthur.

Check out ColdWorld and Darkspace as well. They're absolutely awesome ambient black metal bands that both released some of the best albums of last year. Another good one is Axis of Perdition but only their later stuff is ambient. It's very very dark, scary stuff.

Coldworld is amazing, and The Axis of Perdition's Urfe is probably my favorite album of all time (second maybe to Dirge's Wings of Lead Over Dormant Seas). I will definitely look into to Darkspace (something I should have done a long time ago lol).

That should be Wedard. Start with "Ein Leben in der Ewigkeit" or "Einsamer Winterweg", not with the latest one.

Will do!

Thanks guys :metal:

Try maybe Cryptic Wintermoon or Forest Of Fog, both have some great melodies throught there releases. For Ruin (ireland) have just released a new one up for free download via there website, have not got to listen to it yet but it is getting very positive reviews. Def check out Catamenia, prob the best place to begin tbh. Sacramentum "far away from the sun" is an awesome album, highy rec. Also try Sad Legend. These should start you on the right path.

Thanks! I'll get around to this as soon as I can, Ruins sounds interesting, I have good experience with freebie bands.

After thinking I've pretty much had it with Scandinavian black metal, I stumble upon Setherial's Nord and am currently slapping my forehead. I'm gonna spend some time with this, but sooner or later I'll want to hear other albums. Is it true that they're not quite in the same style, but more in the norsecore, all speed, all the time style? If not, where should I head next? And if yes, can you recommend something similar to Nord by other bands?

I've recently developed an interest in a sound similar to Beherit - Dawn of Satan's Millenium. That peculiar gritty, yet ironically groovy, sound is captivating, especially the song Hail Sathanas.

Are there any bands out there with this particular sound I speak of?

Unfortunately, the only band I've discovered with that particular sound I speak of Slave Whipping Blasphemy's demo, most particularly the song The Kotton Kries for Nigger Blood, and that song is ruined by then-vocalist Insayn and the drum machine.

I'm looking for some symphonic and avant-garde black metal bands.

I haven't heard a ton of bm, but I like Emperor, Enslaved, Ved Buens Ende, Arcturus, Summoning, Samael, Dodheimsgaard, Dissection, Ulver, Drudkh, Negura Bunget, Windir, and some others.

Thanks

^ Deathspell Omega, Virus, Ne Obliviscaris

All of the bands I mentioned earlier in my question... up the page a bit.

I apologize if this has been asked before, but 125 pages is a bit much:

So I've recently developed an addiction to Ulver's Nattens Madrigal. My favorite part in the album is the "happy" riff in Hymn VI- Of Wolf and Passion. The way it mixes black metal style, production values and blast beats with an upbeat riff and meandering bass is incredible. So what I'm looking for is a band or an album that used this sort of sound the whole way through. Positive Black Metal I guess. Vocals aren't a concern, I don't really care one way or another about them. Does it exist?

Summoning on Lugburz and Minas Morgul use quite a few 'happy' melodies. The sound isn't nearly as 'necro', but it's still pleasantly raw, and I'm not sure about the meandering bass. Still, these are the first two albums that come to mind when I hear 'happy black metal'.

Today I got around to listen to Seth - Les Blessures de l'Âme, which I've had on my computer for quite some time. I really like the beautiful and a bit depressive atmosphere it has and also the way they use keyboards. Any more bands who do a similar thing?

A band that I've just found that fits this category and do a fucking good job at it is Alghazanth (latest album). I'm becoming addicted because of the majestic riffing and symphonic placements. Thanks for mentioning Ruin, sounds good.

You might try Amesoeurs. It's a mix of black metal and shoegaze, which results in a lot of major key "happy" sounding black metal riffing, though a couple of their songs have more dominant shoegaze elements than black metal.

I would like to know of more folk-y black metal stuff minus excessive flutes and shit.. like Isengard and Storm. Essentially "old-school" folk metal I guess... Harsh vocals are fine but clean chanting vocals would be a plus.

Some bands you might like:

- Sorgsvart (the debut, Fortapt Fra Verden I Vakkert Selvmord is my favourite release by them)
- Myrkgrav (Trollskau is one of the best albums in the genre)
- Månegarm (maybe, although it might have too many 'flutes and shit')
- Borknagar's first
- Kampfar (their first album is the best, astonishing release)
- Darkestrah (their last two albums are total masterpieces)
- 'The Womb of Primordial Nature' by October Falls
- Druzhina
- Die Saat
- Wyrd (Huldrafolk and Heathen are my favourite releases. Huldrafolk definitely has a strong Isengard influence.)

'Zrcadlení Melancholie' is all you'll ever need. He is one of the best musicians in the field and that album, in particular, is an indication of why. Not only is it one of his best albums, but it's one of the genres best albums.

I'll second Zrcadlení Melancholie. Also check out Hypothermia for some great DSBM.

Any recommendations for bands that play a more beautiful sounding black metal rather than grim, evil and dark? Depressive atmosphere is welcomed too.

Try Drudkh's "Autumn Aurora" Rottenrectum, it has a much more warm sounding feel to it, great album. Have not checked them out fully myself yet but Svarti Loghin get a lot of praise on here for there more uplifting black metal.
Also def try Horn (ger), fuck this guy can write some great melodies, music based on nature, very unique band imo, I would try his last two albums and would rec you to listen to the whole album instead of clips, I dont think you will be disappointed when you get to the end.

Gris is quite damn beautiful and sort of depressive, truly an exeptional band that id recommend to anyone.

The namesong from their second full lenght is quite breathtaking and the rest of the album is almost as good. Very unique stuff and the album works well as a whole.

Oh gosh, there's a lot to list here.

Celestia. One of Frances best bands, check out their last lp and the song "Death of the Lizard Queen," i think this is exactly what you're looking for.

ColdWorld. Melancholie² is excellent, check out "Red Snow" to see how great it is.

Eldrig's Everlasting War Divinity has really beautiful melodies/ keys, big fan of this album.

Warwulf's Forgotten Dreams Of A Lost Empire is exceedingly raw but offers a lot.

Nyktalgia's Self titled is amazing, all around good.

Negură Bunget's Om has some of the most beautiful passages black metal has to offer.

Mystic Forest flashy guitarwork that's really catchy and pretty. I'm a huge fan of Welcome Back in the Forest.

here's a some others which are all good.

I'm looking for some raw black metal, that is aggresive with high tempo, but still is quite melodic. Does anything come to mind? I guess I am thinking of some "black n roll"(?).

Like Behemoth - Pure Evil & Hate and Behexen - Fist of the Satanist sped up, though I don't really like Behexen :p

Edit: Also, Darkthrone - Striving for a Piece of Lucifer.

I already know and love Agalloch. It's great stuff, "The Mantle" is a favorite of mine, but not really what I'm looking for.

I checked out Fen. It sounds pretty good, but again has a bit too much post-rock influence- not a bad thing, but not what I'm looking for: early Drudkh-worship- wall of sound, hypnotic/repetitive riffs.
