Evil Dead sounds like what you want. Bay area thrash but the vocals are not high pitched.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1KbRxNIeSw

Assorted Heap may be a bit heavy for what you are looking for. Nevertheless great band. They verge on death/thrash.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3r59-ijjlQ

Attomica maybe. They are pretty much Sepultura clones so may not be melodic enough for you.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBVLYunMKbM

Vendetta. They are German but have a more melodic edge and a bit on the technical side. The vocalist isn't quite as high pitched as some of the others so they may work for you. I cannot recommend Brain Damage enough.

Razor. Speed/thrash that sounds a fair bit like Motorhead. Very consistent band so you can't really go wrong with any of their albums.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5Od709Y55s

Maybe Sabbat? Not really high pitched.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDBdCnhXTGE

Maybe Gammacide as well. Never liked the vocalist myself but they sound like Slayer with the crunchy riffs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bovQXFJNNKY

Atrophy. The vocals aren't too high pitched. You can really hear the bass in this one and they have thick crushing riffs.

I realize I disappeared for many months, but if ShadeOfDarkness is still around at all I want to say thanks for the recommendations. Having finally listened to them, I like them all. DeadXheaD's vocalist really is uncannily like Dave Mustaine. I'm going to play them for my boyfriend and wait for him to get confused and ask which Megadeth album we're listening to. XD

There was another fairly recent thrash metal band who had a voice extremely similar to Dave Mustaine, and I can't think of their new at this moment.

I remember Early Man's vocals being a pretty straight Mustaine ripoff.

Can someone point in the direction of more underground/unknown thrash in the vein of Apocalypse's "Faithless"? Meaning very energetic, riffy (with emphasis on choppy riff runs) with a hint of melody but not sacrificing power? Preferably non-US bands.

Try out these bands if you are not familiar with them:

Mezzrow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jllkgspv-Bo

Know all of those but thanks for the reccomendations anyway. That Mezzrow disc is particularly worth reccomending to anyone looking for some heavy, mosh-ready, early Testament-like thrash. Abandoned would be cool but there is something about their vocals that just puts me off.

I've been trying to figure out what to call bands like Abandoned. I mean, they're thrash, but if thrash had like, an alternative component? Not necessarily groove metal or post-thrash. I'd throw Blood Tsunami in that category, too. Thrash'n roll? Is that a thing or did I just make that up?

That is a lot of thrash, particularly in technical thrash.

Check out these bands: Laaz Rockit, Wrath, Toxik, Ulysess Siren, anything with Steve Souza like Exodus' Tempo of the Damned album, Artillery etc.

Hit up www.classicthrash.com and all their monthly reviews. Whoever that guy is, he calls out bands constantly for doing the same thing over and over while also finding diamonds in the rough. Very good time killer.

You guys check Mortyr out yet? Brought to you by the dude from rocka-rollas/Blazon Stone fame. Balls out 80s style Thrash the way it should be.

Yeah it's a really aggressive record. Personally, it is my least favourite release of his, but it is a solid thrash record for sure. I think a lot of people on MA will enjoy it.

Well he is at his best writing those melodies, and hooks on his other stuff I will agree. He wanted to write a thrash album for the fun of it I remember him saying and well color me impressed.

Been listening to Onslaught's The Force for the last couple of days. Quality thrash metal for sure, though I can't help but think I've heard most of these riffs before.

In regards to Mustaine sound-a-likes....Newsted's solo album has a lot of parts that sound like Megadeth. "Long Time Dead" for one.

Onslaught has only risen above average with Andy Sneap on the board.

I never really got the appeal of Onslaught either. The one with Grimmett is the only one I enjoy at all, and that's because of Grimmett himself (the songs themselves are really bloated). UK thrash doesn't have the best reputation, but there were plenty better than them.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the preview from the upcoming ONSLAUGHT album because I was never a huge fan of their old stuff.

Fastkill, Attomica, Avenger of Blood, Deathraiser, Ripping Corpse, Morbid Saint, Deathrow etc. That is a list of new and old bands to start with that share similarities with those bands.

Oh, you're in luck today!

(a) Demolition Hammer, Epidemic Of Violence - a ridiculously crushing mix of thrash metal and early death metal.
(b) Exarsis, The Brutal State - these guys are a little more Bay Area influenced, but the speed and intensity is undeniable.
(c) Terrordome, We'll Show You Mosh, Bitch! - has a bit of punk to their sound, but they are so fucking fast it's ridiculous.
(d) Gammacide, Victims Of Science - classic brutal thrash record, similar to Kreator.
(e) Accuser, Diabolic - these guys used to be the more progressive variety of thrash, but on this album, they turned into fast-as-fuck brutal thrash.
(f) Chemical, New Dimension - verging between death metal and thrash metal.
(g) Deathraiser, Violent Aggression - insanity in a record. This album is basically the blueprint for brutal thrash metal.

I think that should be all for now.

Very general request, any 80s death/thrash gems I am missing out on? Stuff that isn't as well-known as Possessed and stuff, but generally seen as essential for any underground afficionado, like Slaughter Lord, Voor, Necrovore and Poison.

Dead Horse

You should really check out Lock Jaw Blog, that's where pretty much all my rare 80s library is from.

Invocator for technical death thrash.

Pentagram from Chile has some excellent demos that are very well regarded in the underground. You may have seen the thread about their album they finally just got out recently.

Epidemic is a good slab of ultra fast death/thrash.

Thanatos' Emerging from the Netherworlds is a good example, although it is from 1990.

Num Skull's Ritually Abused is a very well regarded death/thrash album.

I found that's a surprisingly hard request - it seems to me that most German bands (Destruction, Kreator, Mekong Delta, Tankard for example) sing in English almost all the time. But then I haven't delved much into German thrash.

Sodom - Knarrenheinz

Holy Moses - Verfolgunswahm (Not a very good song)

If anyone is familiar with the Spanish thrashers, Fuck Off they have a new album out in a few days. Their last album was released in 1990. Judging by this song it is surprisingly decent though nothing special.

I really don't like the way Onslaught's vocalist sounds. I don't know if they're putting some weird filter on his voice or what, but he sounds all weirdly distorted.

Yeah but that 666 song is fucking BALLER. Cranked it today. That's one of those hit-you-right-away tracks that bands always seem to write ONE of when doing a thrash album. Leaving me 9 other tracks of 'meh'. Onslaught's last couple come to mind.

I got 10 tracks of 'meh'. There are a few bits that were kinda cool but on the whole it was just kinda boring.

That's kind of been Onslaught's M.O. since forever, though. Killing Peace was OK. Sounds Of Violence was OK. I haven't heard enough of this new one to give an opinion, yet.

Killing Peace had too much groove for me. The band personally told me they wouldn't have any and it would be oldschool to the bone when they were recording it. Shock and Awe is the only song that I really enjoyed as it was the least groove oriented. The title track was ok. Sounds of Violence just reminded me too much of Slayer and Sepultura sounding like second-rate material and the lyrics were juvenile. Power from Hell is ok though only a few songs were very good with a lot of dull moments. Very heavy Venom influence going on. The Force was very good, and I enjoy cranking that once in a while, particularly Metal Forces, and Fight with the Beast. Never checked out In Search of Sanity but I heard it was average Slayer worship.

Groove? The only song on Killing Peace I ever go back to is "Planting Seeds of Hate". Only thing that sticks.
