It's just too polished, in an awful way.

Disagree. To be fair I have not heard the original, but the re-issue sound works to great effect.

If you wanna talk about way too polished thrash re-issue, look at Hallows Eve's Death and Insanity. Now THAT is just terrible.

Another new band worth checking out. They also demonstrate rather well how a modern production should sound. If only Evile sounded like this...

Serpent Obscene seriously rules. I'd like to thank rexxz.

And this is also a recommendation to Exhorder17.

Try Crionic's first album Different. The rest of Crionic's stuff abandons Thrash altogether.

Can anyone recommend me some thrash with great riffs (obviously) and distinctly shrieky vocals, a la Evil Invaders? I love McLaren's vocals, particularly that amazing opening shriek on Tortured Skull.

One up and coming thrash metal band you guys need to check out is a little, small band from Alaska - Korupture.

These guys are awesome. They remind of the craziness of FastKill. The vocal style is a distinct shrieking scream, and it works fucking beautifully.

Kruel is fuckin right on the money.

A huge part of the charm and appeal of the original is the slightly raw, unpolished, typical 80's thrash production which gives it an awesome atmosphere and great character.

The remaster ruins it for me and I'm sure many others. The guitars and drums are too loud and polished in the mix and the malevolent atmosphere of the music has vanished.

The original's vocals were also killer and they also weren't up to scratch on the remaster.

Try Holy Terror's Mind Wars. It contains a plethora of great speed/thrash riffs and Keith Dean's shrieking approach reminds me a lot of Steve McLaren's style.

I suddenly remembered the first few times I heard Storm Alert (remastered) I was a bit underwhelmed so I do see where you guys are coming from. It sounds a little awkward for thrash. But it really grows on you after a while. So I would recommend just giving the remaster a couple more listens. That's what I did and this album ended up among the only polished thrash albums that I actually like. The polished production in this case really showcases all the subtleties of their instrumental-work, so you don't miss anything that you might have with a rougher production.

Cool, thanks. I remember seeing that CD in a record store one time, but passed it up. After I checked the reviews here, I immediately regretted that decision. :durr:

Thanks for the recs as well, Xeo. That Destructor is some tasty stuff, and I don't know how I missed Onslaught for so long.

You can pick up the Terror & Submission/Mind Wars double CD pretty easily. (Both excellent albums by the way.) Each album separately is pretty rare nowadays though.

I have to make a CD for a friend of mine.
He thinks that in Thrash, Metallica is #1.
I am looking for a Thrash play list that has songs with relatively clean vocals, and a lot of solos.

Thanks!

Not sure about solos but do something like this.

Exodus - Another Lesson in Violence
Vio-lence - Eternal Nightmare
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Overkill - Wrecking Crew
Grinder - Agent Orange
Artillery - Terror Squad
Tyrant's Reign - Jack the Ripper (Maybe too falsetto for the vocals. Same goes for Artillery)
Exumer - Fallen Saint
Onslaught - Metal Forces
Powermad - Slaughterhouse
Wardeath - Sodom, City of Lust
Evil Dead - Annihilation of Civilization
Testament - Do or Die (The Whole Legacy album is full of awesome solos)
Megadeth - Tornado of Souls (Megadeth tops Metallica in solos to)
Death Angel - Voracious Souls
Assassin - Assassin

I'd change the Artillery song to 'Khomaniac,' especially if the guy wants great guitarwork (not that 'Terror Squad' has bad guitarwork, mind). Either way, it's a good list.

Guys, family meeting.

I just copy and paste. But i want to say it is so cheap, $10 ! Support the band buy the CD !!

Pre-Orders will be shipped one week before the actual release date (end of July)

NHR Records is proud to announce the re-release of classic material from the Canadian thrash/death masters OVERTHROW. This release will contain the long-out-of-print 1990 debut CD "Within Suffering" (recorded by Tom Morris [MORBID ANGEL] and Scott Burns [SEPULTURA, OBITUARY, DEATH], and mixed by Scott Burns at the legendary Morrisound Studios) and 1989 demo "Bodily Domination" (recorded and mixed by thrash pioneer Brian Taylor [SACRIFICE, SLAUGHTER] at Umbrella Sound Studios).
The release will contain both releases in their entirety, including demo-only exclusive tracks with the full package being completely re-mastered by James Block of Rebarbative Productions (who has worked on releases by THE RAVENOUS, SIGH, ABCESS, INQUISITION, GEIMHRE, and XASTHUR). For fans of Sepultura, Obituary, Death, Sacrifice, Slaughter.

Tornado of Sould is a good choice...but Good Mourning/Black Friday has some wicked solos in it as well. Some Flotsam and Jetsam on that list wouldn't hurt either.

Add Dark Angel's Act of Contrition.

As far as quantity goes, Megadeth has a lot: Holy Wars (4), Hangar 18 (11 solos), Five Magics (not sure, but probably more than 5).

Overkill's Elimination has four solos, if I'm not mistaken.

The vocalists from Atomica and Gladiator sound very much alike to Cavalera's. They're also not quite bad when it comes to brutal thrash.
