Buncha dirty thieves. They clearly ripped off Tales From Genesis Space!

Man, how come Gehenna from Mexico are hardly mentioned? They only released one album and while the first two tracks are strangely melodic and mellow, the remaining tunes sound surprisingly identical to what Adramelch did circa Irae Melanox....and this came out one year earlier! Speaking of early prog/power that's absolutely nuts.

Even though it's not bad, for me it's TOO modern power metal. Good recommendation though!

Well, I think I just discovered my new favorite metal band from Mexico:

Calvaria, a European-stlyed power metal band just put out their their great debut De las cenizas al fuego. Full of guitar harmonies, epic keys (not Disney style), and a vocalist that reminds me maybe of.... Dark Quarterer? If DQ sang in Spanish.

Official video for Fénix:

So it turns out my list of albums from 2021 is alarmingly small. What's everyone been really digging from this year? I wanna see if there are any gems I've overlooked.

Was looking back through the worthwhile releases thread today, which, while 90% death and black metal, did turn up this release:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hsktf3pOqjQ

Speed metal from Japan that sounds like NWOBHM on crack, really relentless riffing. Not all the way through the album yet but it's giving me some Gaywyre/Razorwyre vibes riff-wise. Definitely seems worthwhile especially since I also haven't got much from this year so far. With the whirlwind of releases that was last year, things have certainly slowed down a bit in the heavy/power/speed department. Blacksword and the "new" Cauldron Born album are the only ones I can think of otherwise. Oh, that Kosmic Dragon band too. Still, not a ton. I'm sure there's plenty of stuff I just haven't discovered yet though.

Off the top of my head, Warrior Path, Ironbound, Sacred Oath and Dream Tröll, on top of the aforementioned Significant Point, all released absolute bangers this year.

I also gotta shout out local band Lycanthro's debut full-length, Mark Of The Wolf!

That's on top of the bigger names like Orden Ogan, Beast In Black and Powerwolf, I quite liked what they put out.

Pharaoh, Cauldron Born, Labyrinth, Helloween and Todd La Torre, along with the ubiquitous Maiden, are probably my favorites - Wardrum, Sunrise, Blaze Bayley and Warrior Path put out good stuff too. Dream Troll I guess I gotta check - I remember liking their last one.

Cauldron Born should have an actual new album out soon too, apparently.

This got me thinking about what I've bought in the way of trad/power this year and it's a bit bloody grim. Great stuff but slim pickings to say the least:

Pharaoh (great album, love it)
Helloween (good stuff, but not as good as I hoped)
Blazon Rite (cool album, these guys show a lot of potential)
Cirith Ungol (awesome, but only an EP dammit)
Cauldron Born (again wicked, but a rerecording)

Gonna have to check out what some of the others have mentioned to see if I've missed something special.

Fierce Deity - Power Wisdom Courage
Galneryus - Power Gives Strength
Morning Dwell - The Power Will Go On

My list is quite long at the moment, but these releases stands out:
Helloween - Helloween: I think this one goes without sayings
Marius Danielsen’s Legend of Valley Doom - Legend of Valley Doom Pt.3: Honestly best piece of metal opera I’ve heard this year. Avantasia sort of sucks by now
Marco Garau’s Magic Opera - The Golden Pentacle: Another metal opera. Would definitely appeals to fan of Derdian
Brainstorm - Wall of Skulls: I do like my power metal aggressive and this just fits perfectly into that category. Right, and Andy is phenomenal as usual
Vexillum - When a Good Man Goes to War: fully epic power/folk. Vocal’s a bit weak but the guitar solos are solid and don’t drag
Evermore - The Court of the Tyrant King : your average power metal I guess? But I sure enjoy this Power Quest-ish sound
Silent Winter - Empire of Sins: Hell their vocals is siiiick. That chorus in “Shout”
Morning Dwell - The Power Will Go On : they’re the first band that reminds me this strong of Freedom Call...

This album is pretty fucking good. Just plain old ass kicking metal. No real gimmicks and it isn't trying to recreate anything old - just rocks out. But it does tend to throw in some random other influences like the occasional harsh sections or a big melodic chorus, in very inventive ways of writing. I can dig it.

Here's an off the wall one, can you recommend bands that inspire heavily from Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy soundtracks? I sometimes get that vibe in certain Japanese Power Metal bands, but I'm wondering if Uesmatsu is actually a primary influence in any band, Japanese or otherwise. Thanks!

Off-topic, but the "medieval black metal" band Enid's album Seelenspiegel has a lot of synths that remind me a lot of SNES era Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, etc.

Eh not bad but not great - vocals are pretty weak and the song is kinda repetitive. I do like the idea of a PM band about Lovecraft though...

The vid posted above was track 2, but imo the album doesn't really pick up until track 3.

I mean that's what it looked like from the cover/titles anyway.

Fireaxe also has that Lovecraftian Nightmares album which is marvelous.

That would be cool. I've been looking for power metal bands with Lovecraftian lyrics ever since I'd finished the Mythos this summer holiday

Here's some excellent Maiden-esque power metal: https://masterspy.bandcamp.com/releases

Really having a good time with this stuff; there's just a lot of energy and style going on.

Just discovered Reinforcer and I am sold, this is great! A bit epic, a bit power metal, loads of twin guitar leads and melodies.
Sounds like if Piet Sielck was to produce Dark Forest.

It's pretty cool, yeah. Vocalist kinda sounds like modern Dee Snider. O:

So I've been listening to Riot's The Privilege of Power again lately and I wonder; is there something out there that's comparable to the faster side of that record?

The new Blind Guardian song is shockingly good. Stripped down and aggressive is the way I like them best!

Nothing else really sounds much like that album. The horns!

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the song but the production's still way too modern.

Merciless Law from Chile got their new song from upcoming album released today :headbang:
It's basically a soloproject of Pancho Ireland (vocals+guitar), but I was involved as producer + recorded session bass on entire album, and sometimes a couple of guest guitar solos (not on this song)

Older versions of songs (old mix, basically, updated for the album now) that will be included on the album can be found here:

So I'm fairly new to metal and I'm also a fan of electronic music. I'm interested in bands that add electronic elements into the metal formula. I hear power metal does this a lot, to the point that power metal bands that do this are often derogatorily called "flower metal". What are some good so called "flower metal" albums and EPs to listen to?

You got it kinda wrong actually, flower metal is bands that add too much symphonic elements (not electronic) and end up being too cheesy for some people.
For comparison, this is normal power metal:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZ01-4B6si8
And this is "flowery" power metal:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHolTqDXipc

But, there are indeed lots of modern power metal bands that have electronic elements. This thread talks about it:
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=133750
Just go pick any band mentioned in that thread and give it a listen, might just be what you are looking for.
